That is 38 Senior listed players and 1 Rookie
I believe we have to trim our list to 35 Senior listed players and I think McDonnell has another year on his Rookie contract.

Can anyone confirm these details ?

Yes, the list must be narrowed down to 35 - Ed McDonnell does have another year to run.

Alan Murray and Barry Brooks will surely depart?

I think he has done a great job to hang around in AFL circles in recent years - Collingwood in 2000, Hawks 02-03, and Saints 04-05. Fair effort. Well done to him.

Thommo has signed for another year.

Murray, Brooks, Schwarze and McGough would have to be pretty lucky, wouldn't they?

edit: sorry to be a parrot. Hadn't scrolled up beyond the list. :o

It looks as if the St Kilda football club are trying to keep their list together as much as possible. Aussie retiring aside, the delisting of Guerra is the most significant decision. I believe that his off-field lifestyle had as much to do with the decision as his less impressive form in 2005. Nevertheless, Guerra lent a degree of hardness to the team which (together with Hamill and Hayes) made St Kilda feared by opposition teams. Nick Stone has now been delisted by three clubs. He featured regularly in the Springvale best, yet did not make it in the AFL. He was well liked by his team mates and will probably go on to have a decent VFL career. Dylan Pfitzner was taken as a skinny tall with obvious potential. He was promoted to the senior list last year and played Springvale reserves for most of the season. He won the B&F for them in 2005. St Kilda seems to have decided that he hasn't come on as fast as they would have liked, (despite injury severely hampering his development) and yet they decided to use a Rookie spot to hang on to him for another season.

I suspect that they will promote him again next year.

That much is evident, and I'm not saying that it's the wrong thing to do because obviously replacing a lot of players isn't possible this year. The Swans will be able to replace eight this year - but having three talls promoted off the rookie list was what made it possible.

Yet at the same time, it looks likely that the Saints are headed for a boom or bust 2006, with a clean-out at the end either way. Harvey, Peckett, Thompson will retire. Gehrig will probably join them, and Powell could be washed up in another year as well. Added to that, Murray, McGough, Brooks and Schwarze don't really cut it. Altogether, that translates into a) a lot of departures without easy replacement or b) holding on to the dead wood for two, rather than one, years more than you should. It's going to be a difficult one to handle.

I'd be interested in your thoughts - can the Saints stay in the top four once the veterans clear out at the end of next year? Or is 2006 the last role of the dice for the next three or so years? Do you guys agree with the decision to hold the list steady, with that many senior players approaching or past 30?

I think the club think the draft will be better next year, but add Harvey Gherig Frankie Powell and Thomo, and we will turn over quite a few players next year

Gwilt mcQualter etc need another year before they can replace the midfield veterans, with Ball Dal Hayes still their it should be OK. We should be able to replace Gherig with Watts/Kosi or Phitzer. WOuld like to see a ruckman though
