Port Adelaide has appointed recently-retired Geelong veteran Brenton Sanderson as development coach at Alberton Oval.
The 31-year-old, who retired from AFL football after 209 matches at the end of the 2005 season, will start with the Power when the players resume for pre-season training on 7 November.
Sanderson, raised in South Australia, began his AFL career with Adelaide in 1992 - playing six games in two years - before spending one year at Collingwood and then making his way to Geelong where he played 199 games in 11 seasons.
After being lured to Port Adelaide following his retirement, Sanderson said he was excited about the new challenge.
“I think every player when they get to the end of their career wonders what's next and I've been pretty fortunate to get an opportunity to stay in footy and work at a great club like Port," he told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“In talking to (football manager) Peter (Rohde) and to (coach) Mark (Williams), they just seemed really professional and the position sounded perfect. It was something I was really interested in. Six weeks ago I never thought I’d be setting foot into Port Adelaide but now that I have it’s something I’m pretty excited about.
“I think developing players is something that being a senior player over the past four or five years, you do naturally. So now rather than do it as a player, it will be my role to act as a teacher and a motivator and a bit of an innovator for the young kids."
