Nathalia to lose a few from premiership side. Vallender to Benalla, Nath Gemmill overseas, Parker ? maybe stay in Melbourne.
Numurkah Mark Brown gone, Chips McCartney to coach.
Cobram still looking for a coach
Rumba Hickmont on board should see them push for finals
Congupna Hampshire to coach and bring a few from Shepp.
Mulwala Kennedy to go around again, trying to entice Cooper across

Hampshire (new coach of Congupna) has been making a few phone calls to some of the Shepp 2's, but nothing to report as yet. Obvious targets have been Jacques (ex Congupna captain) and Mason - this guy would be a regular senior player in most GV sides, but has had niggling injuries over the past year or two.
It's a tough ask if Congupna think he's going to 'rape' his old club of all their good fringe players, but Trav is a top bloke and I hope he can get some decent players to at least make The Road competitive. They've been down long enough and deserve some time in the sun as the committee out there work their butts off. Not to mention long time players like Matty Hodgetts who have stuck with them during these times.
My tip for 2006 (and this is very, very early to be making such predictions) is Mulwala. Deni seem to have lost their dominance this year, and Nathalia sound as though they are losing a few. Mulwala on the other hand appear to be keeping their squad together, and Kea Kennedy is keen to pick up another two or three quality players if possible.
With his GV connections, don't be surprised if Mulwala start their recruiting in that area.

Deni have some really good kids coming through the thirds this year, some of them will step up, Echuca United are hot on the recruiting trail apparantley they have plenty of money and are going to spend it.

You're going to be pretty happy when you see Rob mark a ball then. This is probably for another thread, but if Tungamah don't lose many players, and add R. Wren in, they're going to be very hard to beat in 2006.

He lived in Broady for a bit, played cricket here and was a great fella to have around the club. Unfortunately the local football club didn't paint a great picture so they never landed him. He said the couple of BFNC people who went out to visit didn't impress him much.

Madtiger may be right, I believe he was asked to train at a melbourne based club (bulldogs I think), but he might not be training there. Was offered the opportunity though which surprises me that he wouldnt take it up. There is no way a club would draft somebody if they arent prepared to go down and train and show their wares.

Darcy played with tonny around 5 years ago. My tip is he could be chased by NAthalia as he played with Parker at Tonny. Him and parker would be a unstoppable combination in the murray, darcey kicked 98 goals for tonny in one year. Is a good bloke but has been known to put a fair price on his own head.

He has kicked 100+ goals in the last 3 concecutive years, he has good reason to put a fair price on his head. 100 goals a year would go a long way in a season, but not just one, he could be relied on to kick you 5 or 6 a game.

I am not doubting the kid's talent, he can play. Tonny chased him to come back to them a couple of years ago but his demands were too much for the blues to handle. On top of what he wanted a game, he was after a fully furnished house, a job and a number of return flights to Tasmania so he could fly to visit his girlfreind and family, and also fly them over from time to time.
If a club can afford to pay for him, then good luck to them. He is a good player and a good clubman.
The last couple of years he has played in a minor league in tassie, from what i hear, a lesser standard than the Picola League.

I wouldnt say its a weak competition the Regional League probably the third best comp in Tassie behing the Premier League and NTFL. Good player Darcy very strong over head and deceptively quick and a brilliant shot on goal never misses.

Wellman heads back to Rumba as league folds
By Bill McCarthy
November 28 2005
Shepparton News
Keith Wellman is returning to Rumbalara Football Netball Club as football operations manager.
Wellman has been secretary of Central Goulburn Football League for eight years after a season with Rumbalara in 1998, one of the club's early years in competitive football.
He will work with players, coaches and the committee in helping take Rumbalara to the challenge of major league football in the Murray league.
Wellman told Central Goulburn league directors of his decision at their wind-up annual meeting at Violet Town on Tuesday night.
The meeting was told that Rumbalara wouldn't be paying players, apart from the coach and match incentives.
Wellman said the Murray league clubs had been worried that Rumbalara would enter with highly paid players, but the club intended to nurture its own players.
"I'm happy to be involved in the club scene," Wellman said.
League president for the past seven years Jim Ure and Wellman were thanked for their services to the league and to football in the Goulburn Valley Football League in the past 30 years.
Ure was a GVFL vicepresident and Wellman was secretary for a record term, after also being an official in the Kyabram District league and club circles.
Goulburn-Murray regional manager Freddo McMahon was one of the speakers to praise the CGFL administration.
Directors decided to distribute $2300 to each club.
Wellman will look after a few other small accounts as the league winds up.
An official motion was passed to wind up the league.

Paving The Road to success with youth
By Richard Goodbody
December 7 2005
Shepparton News
Newly appointed Congupna coach Travis Hampshire will invest his faith in youth next year after signing a handful of the Goulburn Valley's most promising youngsters.
Yesterday Hampshire confirmed that Jarrod Maskell (Shepparton United), Tim Kelly (Sebastopol) and Chris Bell (Shepparton) would all be lining up with The Road next year, as will experienced LockingtonBamawm United on-baller Brendan Morris.
"We've deliberately targeted blokes who are going to hang around the club for more than one year," Hampshire said.
"They're all young blokes who have got genuine leg speed and can handle the big grounds in the Murray Football League.
"They all look to be very promising footballers."
Last year The Road endured a horrendous season winning just one of their 18 matches.
However, with Hampshire at the helm, and a host of up-and-coming stars now on their list, The Road looks set for a marked improvement next year.
"Things are shaping up really well," Hampshire said.
"We're still speaking to a few blokes and we are hopeful of signing a few more.
"It looks as if it will be a good year next year."
Former Shepparton utility Terence Tuohey will also join The Road as chairman of selectors, while former Ardmona boy Brett Bodey has jumped on board as playing coach of the seconds.
n Congupna will begin its training program on Friday night with a light run and a barbecue afterwards.
All current and prospective players are welcome.

Harrison backs Blues next season
By Richard Goodbody
December 12 2005
Shepparton News
Newly appointed Tongala coach Daryl Harrison believes the Blues' debut season in the Murray Football League will be a successful one.
Harrison, who signed with the Blues in late October after stints with Golden Square, Rochester and as an assistant coach at Stanhope, made the declaration yesterday after taking control of the club's pre-Christmas training sessions.
"Things are looking good at the moment," Harrison said.
"We had 30-odd on the track the other night, which is encouraging.
"And there seems to be a good feel around the place."
Boosting Harrison's confidence is the return of close-checking onballer Ash Nunn.
Nunn, who was a fixture in the Blues' side before he left the club at the conclusion of the 2004 season, recently confirmed his commitment to the club for next season.
"It's good to have him back," Harrison said.
"He's a good player and he'll add a bit to our midfield.
"We've got a few young kids as well, but we're still in talks with a number of other players."
n Meanwhile, Harrison also confirmed that the Blues had settled on an alternative strip for next year.
Tongala will wear a similar jumper to SANFL side Sturt, in a bid to prevent a guernsey clash with Numurkah, who are also the Blues.
"It's a little bit like the light blue M & M one Carlton wore a few seasons back," Harrison said.
"But not as ugly.
"We'll wear that against Numurkah and the club is also exploring the possibility of wearing it as a permanent away strip."
Tongala will wear its traditional navy blue strip in its remaining matches.

Former Lion to snarl at Cobram (SHEPP NEWS)
Cobram's aggressive offseason recruiting campaign has paid immediate dividends through the acquisition of former Brisbane Lion Darren Bradshaw.
Bradshaw, who played one game for the Lions in 2002, has spent the past two seasons playing with Wodonga in the Ovens and Murray Football League, but recently agreed to a two-year contract with the Tigers.
The 25-year-old goalkicking ace, who is the younger brother of current Brisbane Lions forward Daniel Bradshaw, is the second prized signing for the Tigers in as many months.
In early November, Cobram enticed Trevor Mills, who took the Tigers to premiership glory in 1995, to end his nine-year absence with the club.
Not surprisingly, Mills believes Bradshaw's signature is a major coup for the Tigers.
"It's fantastic," Mills said.
"Not just us, but the club, the town and the league.
"But if we are going to sit back and think things are just going to happen for us now we're mad.
"The Murray league is a very strong league and we need a lot of improvement to get where we want to get."
Playing for Wodonga in 2000, Bradshaw won his first league goalkicking medal as a 20-year-old before moving to Mt Gravatt the following season and repeating the feat.
After a brief but memorable career with the Lions, Bradshaw then switched to West Adelaide and duly won the Bloods' best and fairest after booting 97 goals in a memorable season.
"It's been a pretty tough call to leave Wodonga because I've got a lot of close mates there, but I just needed a bit of a change," Bradshaw said.
"I didn't really enjoy my footy this year for a few reasons and I think I just needed a fresh start and I didn't want to ever play against Wodonga.
"Cobram has been really professional in their dealings and I went over there at the weekend and was really impressed with their facilities and what they are trying to do."

braddy is a boom recruit for Cobram. And he would not be cheap!
He has relatives involved at Seymour FC and when the lions approached him last year he wanted massive kanga. Providing the Cobram side has a good midfield who can get the ball down there regularly, I can't see why he won't topple the ton in the Murray comp.

How was his reputation left after this year and the situation that unfolded from a Colbo point of view?

The Timing wasnt great but Colbo respected his decision. He gave the hoppers pretty good service for 3 years and at 34 you can understand that priorities change in life and footy becomes a chore rarther than an enjoyment when youv'e got other things going on. I heard the Tonny scuttlebutt but didn't really believe it, simply because big dan is past Major League footy standards now. Stanhope and Rushy would be mad not to at least ask him if he wants to play considering he has strong connections at both clubs.
At this stage i couldnt see him playing any footy, but in saying that it would surprise me that come Feb he has a few things sorted out and decides to pull on the boots again. Where that will be could be anyones guess.

Nathalia do not have a caoch yet. They advertised the position three weeks ago and no one applied for it. Theya re currently ringing people throughout the region to see if they are interested int he position.
Bit weird, this team won the flag and would be one of the favourites for next year, yet they do not have a coach???
Heard Big Smith is the leading candidate. Mick Cleeland has withdrawn from the race.

Cats have new Brain trust
By Tim Rowe
December 28 2005
Shepparton News
Finley Football Club has named former player Greg Brain as its new coach.
A Murray Football League cellar-dweller in recent years, the Cats have won only seven games during the past two years.
But Brain, who played 100 games for the club before moving to the Wagga Wagga area, believes he can turn around the club's fortunes.
"It has to change and I think we can do that," Brain said.
"We have a lot of young guys pushing up and I want to play finals.
"Finley lost six or so games by less than two goals last year, so we aren't far away and there seems to be a good feeling around the place."
Brain, who coached Farrer Football League club The Rock-Yerong Creek to premiership glory and was named its Coach of the Century, replaces Robb Hawkins at the helm.
The MFL will take on a different complexion next season, with the addition of Rumbalara from the nowdefunct Central Goulburn Football League, according to Brain.
"With clubs like Rumbalara coming in and other clubs being very active with their recruiting it's going to be very competitive," he said.
Meanwhile, reigning premier Nathalia is yet to name a replacement for drought-breaking coach John Nihill.
Nihill stepped down following the Purples' easy grand final victory against Tocumwal in September.
He is heading to Western Australia to further his teaching career.

Rumours continue to circulate that Shepp Bears on-baller Jeremy O'Brien is close to signing as the new coach of Murray Football League club Nathalia.
O'Brien is the latest name to be linked with the Purps, who are still searching for a replacement for premiershipwinning coach John Nihill.
Nihill stepped down from the top job after leading Nathalia to its first premiership in almost 30 years this season.
Club officials are remaining tight lipped about any moves to lure O'Brien across to Nathalia, but don't be surprised if there's an announcement early in the New Year.

Andrew May has left Deniliquin to play for Balranald. Will be a huge loss for the Rams, the guy is a freak. Apparently Balranald is throwing the chequebook at a few other Rams to see if they will go. Interesting times ahead for the boys from Deni.

Golden fleeced Ram joins a new mob
By Mark Brown
Shepparton News
Deniliquin has lost the services of explosive onballer Andrew May.
Rams coach Chris Mitsch yesterday all but confirmed the four-time premiership star had quit the club and would cross to Balranald for the coming season.
"Things aren't looking too bad (for next season), apart from Andy," Mitsch said.
"He's apparently heading over to Balranald, which is a bit of a blow for us. He's a very good player."
May, widely regarded as one of the premier onballers in Murray Football League, was a member of the Rams' all-conquering premiership quadrella from 2001-04.
His loss will leave a considerable hole in Deniliquin's on-ball stocks, however, it's not all bad news for the Rams.
Key defender Rob Resuggan has baulked at an invitation to follow May and will remain at Deniliquin next season.
"Rob has committed, which is great news," Mitsch said.
"He had a bit of a think about it (rival offer) but has decided to stick around.
"Rob's developed into a top-line defender.
"He did some great jobs for us last season and it's nice to know he's there to cover the opposition's key forward."
Mitsch said the club had also regained the services of premiership player Tim Holobowski, who has returned from the Gold Coast.
Troy Bartlett will also resume playing after missing most of last year with the dreaded osteitis pubis.
Mitsch said he was quietly confident the Rams could remain a genuine contender this year.
"We've probably got 10 or a dozen guys who walked straight into this side from juniors and played in two or three flags," he said.
"I'm not saying they got it easy, but hopefully last year was a reminder how hard premierships are to win and that sparks them to work even harder this year."
Deniliquin finished fourth last season, missing the grand final for the first time since 1999.

I don't play I only started following united last year when hedge took over I don't go to every game but just took and interest because of Mark, they look to be big improvers though the coaching/recruiting staff are doing a great job. The culture around the club really seems to be changing for the better.
With a recuiting budget of $200,000 things had want to change. What about the kids in the thirds ? does the club want them to play seniors ? doesnt sound like it .Paying maxi $450 is a joke, put the money into the kids @ least they will be there next year he wont be .Why would anyone with 1/2 a brain pay dayle reyne the reported figures of between $550 & $700 per game when the bloke cant kick left foot. For united to spend a decent dollar last year and not make the finals is testement to their recruiting and waste of someone else's money [sponsors and supporters]

Hang on a tick sticks. In the three years I have been watching Echuca United it has always been prepared to play its thirds players. Guys like Luan Marsh, Liam Guinan, Jake Guinan, Craig Frost and Jarad Nuttall have all played regular senior football.
The club has spent money to help find on-field leaders, guys like Guy Campbell, Simon McCarty, Duane Hueston, who have all played senior football at a high level and understand what it takes to succeed.
In the past the club has struggled, not through a lack of talent, but with a negative mindset. Paying a bit extra to have these guys around the club will change the mentality of the playing group and hopefully put a winning culture around the place.

Purples continue search
By Tim Rowe
January 10 2006
Shepparton News
Reigning Murray Football League premier Nathalia's prolonged search for a coach has stretched into its third month.
President Ron Butler yesterday confirmed the Purples, who broke a 27-year flag drought last season, are yet to sign a replacement for John Nihill.
"We haven't (got a coach) as yet," Butler said.
But he said he was hopeful, more than confident, that the Purples would be able to announce a new leader by early next week.
It is believed Nathalia has been awaiting a decision from Shepparton on-baller Jeremy O'Brien on the role since Christmas.
"We're not concerned about the delay," Butler said.
"We've looked at a few and we'll land one shortly."
Butler said the Purples' playing list had begun preparations for a premiership defence under star midfielder Ash Gemmill.
However, he ruled out Gemmill for the full-time job.
"The boys have been on the track and Ash Gemmill has been taking them, but he's just helping out," Butler said.
The Purples admitted in November they had been forced to look outside their own club to find a successor.
During that time, successful Waaia coach Mick Cleeland had been linked to the position.
Nihill, who has had two stints as coach of the club, quit the role to pursue a teaching opportunity in Western Australia.

Punter,i agree with your theory of a negative mindset which still exists amoung your list, but this will never change while the club recruits players that are ONLY there for the big bucks. This is an actual fact,i have heard it from more than one horses mouth.Players that i have spoken to personaly have said "I wouldnt be playing there if it wasnt for the cash" and this has come from your so called on field leaders as well. Now if you were puting your hard earned cash into the club would you want these players?I know i wouldnt. The players you listed will be good players in their own right [frost is at Echuca FC ]but still not enough jr development for my likeing. If you can built a core group of local players,do what it takes to keep them you will reap the rewards for many years, not the one year these scrooges will stay for.Being critical i know, but looking out for the club. The last time the club made the finals 3-4 good imports and a bunch of great local blokes who could play footy .And were not getting paid the money that is being splashed around over the last couple of years.Has cost the club 5-10 years

Have to agree with you on this one sticks. Maybe they should be cutting the bigger payments in half and getting a better range of players who will get them into the finals. This will also allow them to develop their younger players and the club. Echuca's premierships were won without buying any big imports.
The last couple of years has seen United spend big bucks with no results. It seems about time the club recruited some recruiters!!! Maybe some younger blokes with a bit of influence and their finger on the pulse. The last time United made a prelim final the only bloke on big bucks was Macri, the locals were the key. I think Tenace kicked 100 goals that year.
Lucky they have a loyal group of supporters who drink enough grog to forget about the result by the final siren (and prop up the budgets!)

Yeah that is a fair comment. I would hope that the people they have got at the club are there for more than the money, because if they can put it together they could play some good football and make the finals. Frosty is coming back to United this season and will wear Heritage's number two jumper. Looking at the rest of Echuca-Moama there is not a lot of local talent to put together a strong side. I hope they stick together and do well. I have seen what the one-year scrooges can do to a club and I do not hope that on many clubs.

this post would have to be the biggest load of horse******** ever. for starters their recruiting budget is nowhere near that and Dale reyne is getting nowbhere near that figure. I will concede that Maxi was a mistake not because of his ability but his attitude, the other players on contracts ie Hueston and baker were worth every cent last year as their performances on and off the field were great. Guy Campbell didn't sign with United for money he played his juniour footy there and his father is involved. the rest of the team are made up of local players mostly that have come through the thirds ie, luke Jones, the rowbottoms, guinans, nuttall etc. who are all these players saying they would not be there if only for the cash? Maxi Walker would be the only one.

Two clubs still to sign senior coaches
By Richard Goodbody
January 11 2006
Shepparton News
Reigning premiers Nathalia and Waaia are the only clubs in the Goulburn Murray region without a senior coach for the forthcoming season.
The premiership clubs, which are the current Murray and Picola District football leagues' champions respectively, remain on the lookout for new headhonchos after Mick Cleeland and John Nihill retired at the end of last season.
While Nathalia remains optimistic that it will sign a coach in the coming days, the Bombers are yet to make an announcement on who will lead them this year with just 11 weeks remaining before the season proper begins.
Speculation continues to mount that Cleeland will return to the Bombers' post, despite having resigned from the role and having rejected the Purples' position, but the whispers are getting louder by the day.
In all, there are 53 clubs in the Goulburn Murray region, which incorporates the aforementioned competitions, as well as the Goulburn Valley and Kyabram District football leagues.
In a major shake-up, there will be 25 new coaches for the coming season, while the remaining 28 will enter their second year or more in charge respectively.

Every year about this time we hear how promising United will be but it is always a tale of woe. The performances of the last few seasons should reflect a club that isn't paying anyone, however, we all know they are (I'm not so concerned whether it is $80K or $200K- the fact is they aren't achieving).
You can keep defending the club until the cows come home but until we see some results you United supporters are just full of hot air. Maybe it is time for someone to make a bold move at the Eagles and appoint Guy Campbell as coach!

too bloody right! some of you idiots (not hank1, madtiger or badhairday) need to actually realise that our united seniors only missed out on finals in 2005 by 2 games. one was a draw vs moama on good friday (which was the biggest farce anyway) and vs. nathalia in about round 18 where we were up throughout the game until 1/2 way thru the last qtr and got beaten by 1 kick. and it wasnt that we layed down, our boys were just knackered from caning the league leaders in the 1st 3 quarters. that just shows you that our boys could mix it with the best! Numurkah coach Rob McCartney believes the Blues need to shake the tag of being a good young football side.
"We're past that now," McCartney said yesterday following a tough training session.
"We need to become a good football side.
"Whenever you attach the word young, there's a tolerance there for inconsistent performances, and we can't afford that."
McCartney is embarking on his second stint at the Blues' helm, having coached the Murray Football League powerhouse from 1998-2001, including back-toback flags in 1999-2000.
McCartney said the Blues' current crop of players boasted more depth than when he first took over the club in 1998.
"We probably don't have as many match-winners, but the depth of talent now is better," he said.
"That was one of the main reasons I decided to put my hand up to coach again."
Numurkah has finished the past two seasons in sixth position, just a game outside the top five under the tutelage of former coach Mark Brown.
McCartney said for the Blues to take the next step and become a finals football side, it would require a collective lift from the entire squad.
"We won't be able to rely on three or four players to get the team over the line," he said.
"We're going to be an even squad that will require a consistent contribution from the whole playing group."
In order to extract this overall drive, McCartney believes fitness will be the key.
"Our aim between now and the season proper will be to develop a strong fitness base for the squad," McCartney said.
"We can't afford any weak links."

Nathalia president Ron Butler yesterday confirmed the appointment, four months after premiership hero John Nihill announced he was stepping down from the Purples' helm.
Smith's promotion was finalised late last week.
The 33-year-old, who has coached Picola United on two separate occasions (1997 and 2001-02), will officially take over the reins tomorrow night.
"That will be his first training session," Butler said.
"We think he'll do a top job.
"He was at the club last year so he knows all the players and he's well respected by the entire group."
Smith crossed to Nathalia at the start of last season after a twoyear stint as assistant coach with Tongala in Goulburn Valley Football League.
After suffering a serious knee injury early in the year, Smith recovered to play a key role in Nathalia's first Murray Football League premiership in almost 30 years.
Smith said yesterday he was looking forward to the challenge of spearheading the Purples' title defence.
"I'm as keen as mustard," Smith said.
"I spoke to the club about it (senior coach) a while ago and told them I was interested, but that I'd be busy (on the farm) up until Christmas.
"As it turned out, things have quietened down and I'm right to put 100 per cent into the role."
Smith, who turns 34 next month, said the Purples had managed to keep a majority of their senior list intact.
The only confirmed departures are gun on-baller Leigh Ramsdale, who is returning to Yarrawonga, and promising key forward Brett Vallender, who has crossed to Benalla.
Former Murray Bushranger Ryan Butler is also tipped to depart the club for either Echuca or Geelong, while reigning O'Dwyer medallist Nathan Gemmill is expected to return from overseas in time for the season proper.
Smith said his late appointment did not put the club behind the eight ball in terms of preparation for the upcoming season.
"I was surprised by how the players responded after winning the flag," he said.
"They haven't slacked off at all.
"Most have been in the gym and running for a while now and look really fit."
Smith said the club still had "a few lines" in the water concerning potential recruits and would set its sights on securing a top-three finish.
"If we think we're going to turn up and go through the season like last year, undefeated, then we're kidding ourselves," he said.
"We've got to put in the hard yards and go from there."

Delisted Kangaroo Michael Stevens has signed with Mulwala
I heard that today but didn't believe it. I wouldn't have thought Mulwala would be able to match the money of O&M and GV clubs. Maybe they got him a good job? I think there might be a connection with Brendon Cooper too. Benalla must be spewing. Big coup for Murray league
