Fitter and faster Cats hit the track

The Cats are back on the prowl. After a seven-week break, the Geelong players returned fresh, fit and ready to pounce for their first preseason hit-out yesterday.

The Cats eased their way back into the grind and went through their paces on St Mary's oval at Kardinia Park under the watchful eye of an upbeat Mark Thompson.

A tanned and toned David Wojcinski was one of the welcome returns, after spending most of the year sitting on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in round two.

The dashing defender joined fellow Cats on the comeback James Kelly, Joel Corey and Paul Koulouriotis, who all underwent post-season surgery.

Koulouriotis, who all underwent post-season surgery.

Big man Brad Ottens, who wasn't seen after round 20 when he tore his groin, also made his return to the track.

He got back into the groove with Tom Harley, Cameron Mooney and Josh Hunt, all restricted to light training.

The familiar face of Will Slade, delisted by the Cats in October, pulled his boots back on as one of two players invited to join the club for preseason.

The other was the once familiar face of ex-Fremantle midfielder and former Geelong Falcon Andrew Siegert.

The likes of Peter Riccardi and Matthew Scarlett looked every bit as primed as youngsters Nick Batchelor and Nathan Ablett, who have both muscled up over the break.

But aside from Joel Corey's beard, there weren't too many changes to the Cats look for season 2006.

Cameron Mooney's hair was still wild and woolly, Cameron Ling's locks were still long and getting lighter by the minute, Riccardi looked as though he was 32 going on 22 and the speedy Shannon Byrnes was as lightening quick as ever.

Phew, thank god there were no stories of SJ jumping over fences, stepiing on broken glass bottles etc etc! :D
