Had a look at The lightning Premiership on Saturday and thought it was interesting the difference in umpiring BFL to GVFL. On saturday the umpires appeared to want to be in complete control, especially one fat little red head to the point of over umpiring. Warning water boys about coaching, paying free kicks against ruckman for foot on the circle at centre bounces etc. Also the way the little fat red headed freak spoke to players was with little respect. Does he realise people go to watch the football not the umpires. I hope for all players in the BFL he doesnt do too many senior games, though the way he carried himself i got the idea he might. On the whole thought Echuca will have a better year than Rochester (weight of numbers to come in) and Gisborne and South Bendigo both looked good.
interesting comments man who obviously kicks well on the right foot. being an obvious gvfl supporter, what did you make of the standard of the bfl teams, all be it under strength teams.

Gisborne, South and probably Golden Square looked the best. Sandhurst Eaglehawk and Ballarat Jnrs were young and Kangaroo Flat looked like they fielded seconds and young blokes. Interesting concept though and would have been really interesting if full sides were fielded.

They didn't win a game, finished last in the pool, got rolled by eaglehawk! You think they looked better than the burra whilst losing to them??

I think nth city had a fair few out and will be a different side come round one v's south bendigo. South bendigo must have done well to make the grand final on saturday night, who played well? how did the coach Dan O'bree go?
South did well, whould be interesting to see which 2005 players will be kicked to the 2's for the new players to come in. For me Brad Rohde showed good signs, also Reesey was a star for south and looks to be one or the more promising recruits, showed great leadership. Zane Taylor looks like he could be another little Al Galea in time. Daniel Bevan suffered an injury in the GF and was stretchered off. South look promising.
Breeza like always stood up for the club and starred in all games bar one where he was a bit quiet. Was stiff not to get the MVP for the day I thought. But yeah, like always great work from O'Bree.

Has Matt O'Toole been sited for the square as yet?
Has Matt O'Toole been sited for the square as yet?
He is all set to be unleashed in Round 1 against the reigning premiers from all reports.
Been doing a heap of Boxing over the summer too, hate to be a defender trying to curb his influence on games this year.
He owes a few blokes a couple too, but I think that was after he had kicked his 10th that day anyway.

Never kicked 10 in a game before Truth Hurts?
Judging from the jealousy in your comments probably never had 10 kicks.

Can anyone tell me how matt "pirate" O'Toole is travelling this year?

Agree with No Left Foot - Square looked the best BFL club on the day despite their defeats. Square played E'Hawk and Rochy - they had about 75% of the play against E'Hawk but couldn't kick the score. They were also very competitive with Rochy. Had they drawn another pool they would have done quite well...
Expect them to feature in the last weekend in September (or whenever the BFL granny is  )

Correct again NLF - The umpires are quite different between the BFL and GVFL. The BFL umpires were very technical and often missed the basic frees. High tackles, holding the ball.... you could spin out of 4 tackles and the 5 tackle would be a ball up.... no reward for the tackler.
Suppose it was a practice for the umpires also and lets face it they are bad during the year, let alone in pre season.

For a start budy, no jealousy in those comments.... just trying to point of that boxing doesn't make you a better footballer.
No, i have never kicked ten, 5 is my best to date.... whats yours wobble? And i can say i have had around the ten kick mark on a few occassions. do you play footy? or you just enjoy licking peoples cake holes on websites?

Johnny T, If square looked the best but were beaten cause they couldn't put the score on the board, how were they best looking side? Isn't how many goals you kick or the score you put on the board? Wasn't there any other side competitive to Rochy? Echuca give them a run and the GF wasn't a bad spectical from where i was sitting? A point the diff at a latter stage of the game?

Fair point! Boxing doesn't make you a better player, keeps your fitness levels up though whilst recovering from injury. It all helps!
My best haul is 4, so you have me covered, I'm still a player albeit only a battler, and no I don't enjoy licking cake holes I just do it to relieve boredom!

Doubt it. I f they had 75% of the play and couldn't win what does that tell you? lack fire power, killer instinct, how much of they play do they need to actually win a game? 90%? 100% one side never has that much play!! If they had 75% and couldn't kick a winning score then they have a fair bit of work to do! Whilst e-hawk had 25% of the play (according to you) and won the game! imagine if they had even 50% they would have flogged square...

Exactly No left Foot they did lack Goal Power.
Matt O'toole 60 odd goals last year DID NOT PLAY
Darren Walsh proven goalkicker DID NOT PLAY
Luke Rosa Tall Forward DID NOT PLAY
Ben Doherty?? DID NOT PLAY
Some pretty handy forward there.......what's that say about square's depth to lose to eaglehawk & rochy by 2 points???

I don't think Doherty is on board with Square so you might have to sractch that one. South had about 8 out but it really doesn't pay to carry on with who was out because there is always going to be players missing.

From what i know south had these fwds out.
Dayne Frew - Port Melb/ Bendigo Bombers Hulk
Marty Shadbolt - Dominated in last years final series after missing most of the year with an injury.
Nev Clarke - Same as walsh but better (more goals)
Rick Coburn- add a lot of toughness around the fwd line.
Thats just the fwds that were missing, from what i can tell south will struggle at the selection table!

Eyles great player- but looked overweight and ordinary in finals-He's well past his best-Derek on the other hand is like a good wine-getting better with age-most suitable analogy for Derek-does like a drink or three thousand. Will someone challenge Gisborne this year? Marcus Barham who cant coach gets them over the line-What's going on there. A three year old todler with a speech impediment could of coached them to a flag last year!!!!
What an absolute disgraceful comment to post. Barham has done an apprenticeship at AFL level and under McGuane who is now an assistant coach at the Saints. He had a similar side that McGuane could not get over the line in his last year. End of the day he has the most disciplined and well drilled team in the comp and that is due to his football knowledge and the respect those players have for him. Gun players are returning to the club to play for him. Only a person with an IQ of a 3 year old toddler would post something so stupid.

Finally K.A , you start to make some sense , i couldnt agree more with your comments about Barham , iwould like to know why woody07 would make such a comment, could be that jealous streak that a lot of opposition supporters seem to have when theyre up against Gisborne . after seeing them train a few times recently my guess is they are going to be a very tough side to beat again with a couple of the new recruits absolutely flying . K.A im disapointed you didnt somehow mention Sunbury in your post , maybe next time. for what its worth heres how i think theyll end up after the final round GISBORNE STH BENDIGO EAGLEHAWK GOLDEN SQUARE SANDHURST CASTLEMAINE MARYBOROUGH NORTH CITY KYNETON KANGAROO FLAT

Sorry Boys I agree with Woody on this one. Compared to the other B.F.L lists last year, Barham's was by far the outstanding list and had plenty of experienced campaigners. Breaking "RUMOUR"! Just heard Bendigo living legend Claude will coach the Interleague side next year with Damien Drum. Two men, one watches footy of a weekend at a regional level, the other has coached at AFL level. Which one has greater intellegence? How do you spell Drum without the 'R'?:D. Can anyone put any truth to the interleague "rumour"?

They definitely had a good list however look at Sunbury in the Ballarat League - had the best list by a mile and won every game except the Grand Final. End of the day if the coach knows what he is doing then will get a good list a flag. Seeing Gisborne won last years flag Barham must know what he is doing.
I would have coached them to all 4 of the last flags instead of 3 out of 4. What about you Toady? Got a good coaching CV?

Flat v Hawks
Tigers v Dragons
Bloods v Nth City
Magpies v Magpies
Square v Gissy
My tips-
Hawks-easily
Can't pick between Tigers and Dragons, will be a very close game. Kyn just

2 things- He is probably very happy with his money, and enjoys the big fish small pond feel. Thats all I can say because he is certainly up to scratch.
I myself being a NCFL follower have seen this conners play and i can tell you with confidence he is certainly up to scratch and could walk into any bendigo 1st side and make a impression. Seen him play prac match last week and is lookin fiter than ever before. Im not tryin to float his boat but he is a quality player who wedderburn would miss in a big way if he ever left.

Good to have u back old mate. I like the odds of Sth, can't see NC getting within 8 goals. I'll load up on them (max bet?) and a pineapple on the dragons. even with all the outs, i think they'll still overcome the tigers.

North City will be one to watch in the future. Obviously they will take some time to find their feet but don't be surprised if they have one or more premiership flags hanging in their rooms within their first 5 years in the league. It might be a big call but if anyone knows their history they will agree. 5 flags in a row before heading to the VFL (when the ballarat league was at its strongest).
The trip to ballarat will give the bendigo league clubs a taste of what a succesful Country football club can produce not just on the field, with its A class facilities, all of which were established in the early 90's before they moved to the VFL. To think a local club could have pokeys, electric scoreboard, and spa's int the rooms back in those days blows ya mind.

What did people think of the game yesterday between Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat?
The Flat applied good pressure on the brough but simply didn't have the same class all the way across the board. Flat's list has improved a fraction and obviously some of their younger players are getting better but it was their gun players that played well yestie Brown, Shannon Millward, Harrington with the exception of Cam Millward who had a quiet one.
Eaglehawk will have to play better than that against the better sides but as often happens they are likely to play better against better opposition. Luke Button on a wing was one to impress while Marty O'reilly was Best on Ground for mine.

To say that the Flats list has only improved a fraction is an insult. Yes we lacked in foot skills and we gave away alot of undisciplined free kicks but overall we will be HEAPS better than last season.
Eaglehawk will be very good but based on yesterdays perfomance have a lot of work to do.

What would you give me on south by 15+ goals?
I played all my junior footy with North City and trained with the seniors up until Feb when i moved for Uni, and my brother is in the side for tonight. The boys are far too young to casue any damage at this stage of the season. I think 10 boys are making their senior debut tonight.

Easily one of the worst games of footy I have seen in some time. South accounted for the very young North City team easily. I would think the big test for South will be this weekend when they actually have some competition (Gisborne). IMO they need to share the footy around more or they will become a very one dimensional team that is easily shut down.

WW - I saw the game last night and I dont like the way South kick up the lines, dont look inside and dont appear to want to handball. A couple of weeks into the season and this has to change. South really starts next week as Golden Square got home against a very inaccurate Gisborne but a win is a win.
Mental note to South - Home games need beer on ice as I was very disgruntled with the warm temperature of the beer. Easily lost sales for 12-15 cans based on this. As such I was forced to watch the game closely as I could have been hammmered by quarter time........

Okay fellas, what do we think were the big talking points to come out of the opening round. Obviously the ordiniary showing by North City is one, Maryborough certainly look to be on the improve with their gutsy win, I reckon Kyneton and Sandhurst result was about as expected, i reckon they will both be in the mix for the fifth spot, and i guess a big result was square downing the inaccurate gisborne. good result for square, should give them plenty of confidence going into the clash with sandhurst this week. and i suppose eaglehawk did what it had to do to get over what was a pretty reasonable effort from Kangaroo Flat on Friday.

After seeing Sth last night a couple of look alikes for you
Dawson - Eithopian - He looks like he needs a feed but may challenge in the world titles later in the year. Can beat Mottram
Clark - He was on fire last night.......or maybe it was his hair
Taylor - Sensational effort after riding at Caulfield all day. The Chris Munce of Bendigo football.
Without naming names there looks likely to be a big annoucement this week from Sth in regards to a leading hair replacement firm. Say "yeah, yeah".

Has anyone heard about North Ballarat and anyone they have picked up ? Whats people gut feel about the likelyhood of success first year in ? :)
Hey mate, don't know how relative this is as im sure it is well overdue. I live in Ballarat and have several close ties to the club. Enormous young talent, but that's the problem, they are young. Have several gun players who will emerge in the next few years, such as Ryan Gurton (Ballarat Rebels, Vic Country) and Cameron Richardson. Biggest problem is the experience, oldest player is 23, so i doubt they will find much of the footy this year. North Ballarat is traditionally the strongest club in the Ballarat Junior Football League, so once they get a few years under their belt, and a few more players, many of whom will drop out from Ballarat Rebels and North Ballarat Roosters, they will be a force to contend with.

Gisbornes bad kicking as Barham said is bad football. South could beat most teams but will need to play well to beat Gisborne at home.
Gisborne is just as likely to come out and kick straight this week and beat Sth by 8-10 goals.

Bit hard to pick who will go well this year but early signs seem to be for the "BIG 3" Gis, Sth, GS
Gisb. have the score on the board and are the team. But have a huge bullseye on their heads and square have proved they can be beaten...inaccuracy or not
if South can play consistent footy (something that eluded them last year) then they WILL play off in that last Sat. (they have got great list & ability when they are "on")
Dunno about Sqaure yet...early signs are good but still have a lot of work to do.

after seeing the sth v city game on the w/e the way the game was played seemed significantly different to football in ballarat. sth seemed to push numbers into their back half, almost flooding, and then all pushing up when they got possesion. north often kicked into their 50 to find 7 or 8 sth players as opposed to their 3 or 4 and were then exposed in defence. is this a fair observation of how the game is played in bendigo?

Bendigo football is a whole different game to Ballarat. Ballarat is a lot faster, more fluent play, that is why when North found their 50 arc flooded they couldn't penetrate it. In the true meaning of the word the word, North City got the baptism of fire!

the fact that north were able to continually get the ball into there 50 is a good sign, if they are more productive with how they get the ball in and how they use it once inside we should see a much more competitive city side in the coming weeks
