Gday guys,
What can you tell me about Box Hill North as a club and how do you think they will go in 2007?
Screw the naysayers, good on you guys! At least you've got the cojones to give it a red-hot go this year.
Make sure you let everyone know well in advance when your home game at Punt Rd is on - should be a great feeling running onto the hallowed turf.
Tigernuts
At this stage we have the ground booked in for (hopefully) June 30th. But this isn't set in stone as the VAFA still hasn't confirmed the schedule yet (drought).
That means we should be playing Box Hill... not definate though.

I can't remember what number Lairdy had. 100kgs, 120kgs..... either way he's a big unit and is agile as well. Has a basketball background so gets around okay.
Did he play ressies against WB out at Truganina last year? There were a couple of big units stalking the park that day.

Gday guys,
What can you tell me about Box Hill North as a club and how do you think they will go in 2007?
They have been steady improvers from the last few years and if my memory serves me correct, pumped Powerhouse round 18 (who went on to win the flag)?
A big change to where they were a few years back.
Club itself - don't really know. Beer was cold after the final siren which is always a grerat start! :thumbsu:
Gday guys,
What can you tell me about Box Hill North as a club and how do you think they will go in 2007?
As a club? Well they were never a rich club and struggled around with a great social atmosphere for nearly 20 years in the old Churches Association and then the Southern.
They made the move to VAFA as it was seen as a better fit for them than Eastern footy comp.
This will be their 6th season in VAFA.
The first 3 seasons were pretty ordinary on field. When they came over they had a big strong team, with a lot of older players. After realising they needed younger and quicker players, many of their stalwarts finally retired. They recruited hard from Deakin Uni. They put in strict a 'code of conduct' and worked hard to change their culture as well as their playing personal. Sound famililar? Richmond Centrals are going down this same road at present.:)
2005 season they started to show the rewards on field for all the hard yards the off field staff had put in. They finished middle of the road and had some breakthrough wins against teams that had previously traed them as cannon fodder.
2006 they finshed 4th. Losing by 8pts to Power House in the first semi. Power House went on to smah all opposition in the following weeks and win the flag. Their 2s played some very impressive attacking footy but just dropped to many games early in the year and just missed finals.
They evidently have lost none of their key players and are confident of adding a couple more quality players to the senior team.
They have managed to keep improving on and off the field on the back of stable leadership. The President (been in top spot for all of their VAFA life) has kept the same key people in his executive. The same applies to the coaching staff, it has only added to it's ranks in 6 years, losing no one. They have had Afrim Odza as their capt. for 5 years (he has stood down this year) and the ressies coach (a good mate of mine:thumbsu: ) has just stood aside after 3 developing years. Mark Hood from Mitcham and Coburg is now heading up the reserves.
They look to be in with as good a chance as anyone for promotion this season, but they are not likely to be seen on this board sprouting predictions like some clubs.
The big cross against the club is their lack of juniors:thumbsd: . I believe with the addition of the club 18 team known as the Dragons, they are poised to introduce U/19s next year. The focus of this will be the same as the Dragons; mostly made up of asian background players. This is due to BH long held desire to utilise the strong asian community in Box Hill.
There is one other thing about this club that sets them slightly apart from your average local footy team.
Each year they go to Japan to play in a tournament open to teams from Japan and all over the world. This is usually done on the Queen's B'day weekend. Although they have developed the trip from 4 days out to 11days now. This year the tournament has been switched to October. It should make for a hell of an end of season trip. There is a DVD produced by BH of last years trip. I hear it is being looked at by several media shows and is to be aired at one of the VAFA functions. I have seen it, it runs for about 10 minutes and is a real eye opener. It is not all just playing footy and drinking. They travel to Osaka for shool footy clinics and Hiroshima to visit the peace park and ground zero. Peter Kotsaridis is the guy to contact for a free copy. This information is on their website http://www.boxhillnorthfc.com.au/
Another mate of mine, Peter Tugger Pullen, has gone with them the last 2 years. Tugger is a VAFA umpire. He evidently, so he say's:D , has now gained legendary status in the land of the rising sun due to his ability to umpire nearly all the games in the tournament. Tugger would be an good person to give you an independent view of the club. Contact Benny Goodman (VAFA) for his phone or email.
Japan Samuri (national team) travels to Australia each year and plays games in Melbourne. Box Hill North were the team that started it all for them, and still play a match against each othet every year. BH has also hosted New Zealand and Vietnam national teams.
Because of these connections they get quite a lot of media coverage. If you don't like being on National TV  or being on the back page of the Age, don't join this club.
I think the best take I can give on this club is :
A very social club that is steadily building a strong team with a lot of outside attractions to keep it's members interested.
Facts I know:
President - Simon Evans
Senior Coach - Peter Armstrong
Premierships- Seniors 1991, Reserves 1995, Narita Cup 2002, NC r/u 2003/04/05.
Hope that helps.
Are you thinking of playing or are you just interested via a friend:confused: ? I have become a fan of VAFA footy. It is generally an attractive, clean style of footy to watch.

Wow, Spy you certainly do know your stuff! :D Interesting reading.
Good luck to Box Hill North for this season. At this stage our Punt Road game is scheduled for the clash against BHN - the general consensus among many down at KB Reserve is that Box Hill North is a well run, progressive club; basically a good bunch of blokes with whom we look forward to showcasing our clash on the hallowed turf of Punt Road. :thumbsu:
Yeah... and our best win in the reserves in '05 was against BHN. I seem to remember kicking the game winning goal with a minute or so left... it's as if it were yesterday :) :) :)

p.s. Loved the large fella running through the pack with the elbow raised poised to do some damage!!! I also noticed Mick and Dan Penny - those guys CAN play.

Getting back to the real stuff.
Fantastic news about Richmond getting a game on the wonderful Punt Rd oval. For someone who spent his early youth travelling to these cultural icons every second Saturday, it gives a romantic feeling of coming home.
Experienced the nostalgic feelings last year when watching the odd game at Glenferrie Oval.
With the doubt over the condition of some grounds, would it not be prudent to have clubs and or VAFA to see how many of these ex VFL grounds are available?
I think the AFL umpires now use Victoria Park. Surely they aren't using it during Saturdays. Essendon's Windy Hill is probably to far out for most of D4 teams. Sth Melb ground is now a soccer ground. Fitzroy Reds are housed at the original home of Fitzroy.
They say the old VFL Park surface at Waverly is still in great condition. If you add the old VFA grounds I'm sure there must be opportunities out there for clubs to set up the odd marquee game. Again, Richmond have shown the lead. Well done Centrals.

There will come a time when Centrals will stand tall and take immense pride with the success they will have achieved. Although I am not part of this club, I have a strong sense that they re-building the club from the ground up based on integrity. This will pay off handsomely in the long run both on and off the field. Compared to those clubs who look for quick gratification and abuse the system, I know you guys will always be able to hold your heads high when it comes to signing the VAFA's stat. decs.
Hang in there Secretary!
Shall do, mate.
No funny business here.... if you want the best steel it has to be forged in the hottest furnace.
Like on Sunday running around playing handball games with the kids at the council community day... tell you what, it weren't half hot!

I really don't think I should honour that with a response. Why don't you come down to training; show us your stuff and we can see how big of a hero you actually are? What's the point of your incessant club bashing? Come down and help us turn it around. It's a big challenge and we're really enjoying it. As far as I was aware that's what it's all about - we're not playing for sheep stations, just fun.
With regards to South Yarra playing on our ground; the councils are already under pressure ensure the playing surfaces are safe. Having 2 teams play on the one ground would only provide 1 day per week for the ground to recover. Unlikely.

Hope to see you out in the middle this season 'nellup'!
Box Hill North certainly had a big year last year and will be looking to go a little further. Totally agree re: your Centrals sentiments, softer blokes would have folded or headed for Clubbies - they did it hard last season, hope they have it better in 07 (as long as they don't beat us!).
Who do you rate as the key players throughout D4, given your knowledge?
;) That didn;t take long did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!topturtle;)
Some one here mentioned the Penny boys from BHNth,yes they can play a bit, also a bloke called Justin from there, very fit and one to respect.Centrals have a young bean pole of a kid with a head of curly hair,he can take a mark and with a bit of bulk and footy nouse could be valuable. The new commers in Mornington??:rolleyes:HAD A CLOSE AT HAND LOOK:rolleyes:at this side in a practice match last year and they have a style and some players that deserves some pre season respect.Lilydale make their return and have some very big blokes and if they can get some speed and aggility to compliment this may just surprise.
Season 2007 is wide open, all clubs should heed the warnings expressed here about U19's,these are a must have, all clubs need new youth comming up,even if you run a combined side with another club as Bentleigh are doing and also I believe Powerhouse are doing this.
That "big fella" running through the pack in the BHN video of Japan was the coach[and still is],fortunately he took himself off IMMEDIATELY after that incident which saved "someone",the job of reporting him,and no he does not play in the regular season,"PLAY" HA!!
he was the bloke that the saying "white men can't jump" was written about.

D4 could be a section of the top 2 or 3 teams a class ahead of the rest.
Very confident that North Bunswick (spoon favourites) and Syndal will hold up the ladder. Richmond will struggle but show improved good form, and Mt Lilydale with Sth Mornington settling in with the occassional win..
St Marys with reasonable form without showing it on the board where it counts last season will be at the top with Eltham. Albert Park will be the other contender with the other possibility UHS as of which I have not heard much news. 5th to 7th a roll of the dice between Eley Park who rely heavily on the dominance of comp B&F David Payne and the emerging forward Dave Viola, Bulleen and whether they can improve in their fitness regime with enough talent in their top echelon to push for a finals birth, Cookson, Badenjek ditto ditto and Box Hill North who improved last year and rely on D Penny heavily and an injury troubled big forward. Like Eley Park with Payne. No Payne no Sharkers, no Penny no Box Hill.
Grand Final - St Marys and Albert Park.
Can they maintain the frontrunning form - Eltham?
POssible of upsetting some more fancied sides - Mt Lilydale.
Your ideas?

Have to agree about D Penny, can dominate but is pretty easily put of his game.
Definitely plays better when he isnt losing his cool and getting sucked in, beat us of his own boot in the first game then hardly got a touch in the next.
How is everyone else going with Praccy Matches and training grounds??? Any word on season delays at all???

Saw Penny kick a bag against Centrals but I guess plenty did that. Seemed erratic in the goal kickers leaderboard but I guess he spent some time on the ball?
Praccy matches and training grounds non existant?????
I would imagine if no rain over the next couple of weeks the season will be delay or shortened (thats just my opinion)

As a backman i have played on Penny a few times now. I was happy when he went into the middle as it meant he stopped taking hangers on my head. I probably wouldnt say he is easily put off his game. There were a few games where we played Box Hill and he didnt get a kick down forward but then went into the middle and tore us up. Will be interesting to see how he goes this year.
I think the question asked earlier was who do people think are the best players going around at each club and how are they looking for this season. Thoughts anyone?

Maybe not put of his game, but he can go missing.
I know what you mean I played on him 3 times last year and twice he murdered us, it was the 3rd game that he was pretty quiet.
He would be no 1 at Box Hill, Stephen Bennet at Albert Park definitely underated, Cookson runs pretty hard all day dont know if he is a matchwinner though. Elthams playing coach is very classy.
Not sure if all that many more really stand out.

They have plenty of other decent players, D Penny is a lot better than decent at his best.
Enough about him, ego would be expanding at the moment.
A couple of mates in SFL were saying Sth Mornington have a heap of fit young blokes but struggle a little on the physical side, they might find Ammos a little more to there liking.
Any thoughts??

I agree they would find Ammatuer footy to their liking;) . At least compared to the physical nature of Southern.
Most teams coming from Southern take at least a year or two to adapt to the quicker style.
In the case of SM; they have evolved from a strong junior club. Yes they will be a little light on for experience, but I expect them to learn fast. The only way should be up :thumbsu: for Sth Mornington. The question we can't answer yet, is from where.

Agreed.
I think South Mornington and Mt Lilydale will be competitive but probably lack the firepower to make a massive impression.
That said, it all sounds good in that they have come from junior ranks with hopefully the future a rosy outlook. Good luck to both teams.

I agree with you flowerpower especially mt lilydale if the can get just a few of the guys back from a few years ago when they made the grannie they'd upset a few. As for the best players theres an onballer from Uni High whose name I cant recall but polled very well in the league bnf a few years back and is easily in the best half a dozen in the league. and personally i think that uni high will be a serious threat this year

This is right crack up this forum. Only just been put in the loop. Spent all day casting me peepers on all the posts.
I am familiar with this mobile block of flats that coaches the Box Hill team. I have not seen the video but have heard his explanation.
He reckons he was completely clagged after rumbling around in the ruck for 20 mins and was headin to the bench. He was only 5 steps from plonking his payload on the pine when he noticed they were calling for last orders on the steak sangers. He reckons he was just raisin his arm to indicate he would have five, when this mug expat aussie got in his way. Says he diden even see the bludger. He's spewin bout it stil though. Reckons it meant there were only 4 steak sangers when he got to the BBQ hut. Sounds like a reasonable excuse to me, specially if ya know the bloke.
I plyed with and against this bloke up in the bush. In those days he was a tad 'ard' as they say, but he and most blokes always had a coldie with you after and ya had to nearly take an ax out on the field to get any weeks from the old doddlers up at the Wang RSL where they set up the tribunal.

Strewth BART'S HERE NOW,your comments about SPY1,"MOBILE BLOCK OF FLATS","PLONKING HIS PAYLOAD","TAD ARD","OLD BUGGER",as you obviously know who SPY1 is,I would keep my doors locked if I were you,he's a big unit you know,if he decided to "come through the pack with his elbow up" aiming at you,you might starve on the way back if he made contact, might do some damage, then again as you say he is "NEARLY 50"so you would probably be able to duck, but hang on,you played with him so you must be "NEARLY 50"also,so it would probably be a fair contest.
By the by if you reckon you could do a better job on the field in Japan, than this "OLD BUGGER",the trips on in October, come over I'm sure he could have a word to the ump and have you looked after.:D

Anyway here's a bit of gossip for you. I heard that a particular club is sending down some key players to Wilsons Prom this weekend to do a commando style training weekend.
Any other clubs using any kinds of different / out of the ordinary training techniques so far this pre season due to the majority of us not being able to get a footy out on the oval.

I dont see what putting the season back a few weeks will do, it either rains or it doesnt.
I wonder if there will be any sign of injury waivers if the season goes ahead to stop the councils getting sued for injuries??

Well some decent rain followed by some sun would definitely at least encourage grass growth, and we could maybe at least have a season.
I would take one downfall over nothing, which is what we have got.
Our ground is not that bad, I guess everyone finally knows what we go through every year losing our ground for at least 4 months (7 last year) its a bit harder but the grass cover is as good/bad as every year.

Tipping final 5 of;

Albert Park
Mt Lilydale
Bulleen
Box Hill to be close as well.

Albert Park finished the season off very strongly last season and have some quality players, particularly in the mid-field. Along with BHN and Bulleen they were in a fight for 4th spot, until BHN secured it in the last round by fixing up eventual premiers Powerhouse.
Plenty of speculation at this time of year, who has recruited well, who has lost players.....

Not sure how high up you'd have to be to overrule council jurisdiction on which grounds are fit to play on and which are not. On current form there would be too many grounds in an unfit state to open the season as per normal across all grades. Obviously a lot can happen between now and mid April, so how can anyone be so sure of an on-time start to season 2007?

Exactly Knackers.
Of course the VAFA officials want the season to start on time - where do you think they get their pay packets from? If there was any reduction in games to be played, all clubs would have recourse to reduced affiliation fees, thus less money in the coffers for administration staff!
If the council says no, and VAFA says the season is go, where do 1/2 the clubs think they will be playing????

There is no huge need to panick just yet I rekon. Grounds only need 2 to 3 weeks of good watering to get them up, and 1 water a week during Winter to keep them cherry ripe. Grassroots footy in Melbourne is far too big and important for the gov't to let a season slip (Over 50,000 players - Juniors included) and god knows how much money footy brings in. Plus it keeps blokes like those tossers from Hawthorn Ammo's off the streets! (Just a friendly jibe boys!!)
I rekon it will be game on from April 14!!

I've noticed a few posts on the BigFooty forums about this; mainly having a bit of a whinge about it. I guess it's not an ideal scenario but it won't be too hard to comply with for most clubs.
We don't have a phone line (let alone a computer) at our club, but it is possible to use a laptop with a wireless card to connect to the net. This is the solution I would recommend to most clubs without Internet connection.
Have a word to the players down at your club. I've no doubt one of the boys would have a laptop with wireless internet connection.

Did my super hero ears detect the cries of help from a follicle challenged citizen?
Your comments concerning the insurance companies being the ultimate arbiters on whether a ground is fit for play: Correct when it comes to nervous councils.
However Nelly; the simple fact that VAFA is made up of many member teams who have access to quality school facilities allays a big portion of the problem.
Most recent posts have a least some truths.
The VAFA executive DO rely on teams playing footy to generate the economy that is VAFA. As such they will strive to accommodate all teams, in any way they can, to start the season on time. Yes there is a very real threat, to 'District Clubs' in particular, that grounds may be closed for indefinite periods past April 14.
A possible scenario facing the brains trust down at Elsternwick Palace could involve up to 20% of member teams, across all grades, having nowhere to play for the months of April and June. This is where our paid servants earn there money. Rather than just put everything on hold, you will find a massive re jigging of the fixtures needs to take place.
You may find clubs without grounds playing up to their first 8 games away. Utilization of venue resources will be the key. It may require some games played on a Sunday, double headers running into twilight games, Friday twilight games for reserve grade/Clubbies/U19s and even night games midweek.
Flexibility is the answer. Clubs effected by the GP around the Albert Park area have been experiencing and overcoming this problem for years. Last season Hawthorn played a huge block of games away while they desperately negotiated for the use of Glenferrie Oval, then came home with about 8 games in a row on their temporary home.
I don't claim to know anything for certain. I like everyone else is willing each cloud that passes overhead to burst open.
I just believe that the VAFA is far better resourced to overcome this crappy situation than other suburban leagues around Melbourne.
And yes Nelly; in the pre litigation era of the 'good old days' we would have been just happy to see a set of straight goal posts.
As for Callit, I defend Nelly here. He was merely referring to the good old days of people not suing each other as part of their usual retirement plan. He was not advocating a return to all things retro footy.

At the VAFA members meeting last night all clubs were informed that the season WILL start on 14th April. It's up to the clubs to inform their players and it's up to the VAFA to worry about the rain falling.
Spy1 is dead right... Situations like this is where the VAFA Executive (as of last nights meeting now to be referred to as Board) earn their keep. There are all sorts of options available to the association. It may require changing the fixtures a little but the point they wanted to stress is start preparing for season 2007 because it's just over a month away.:thumbsu:

Did you ask if we could get our rescheduled games at the Telstra Dome? We'd like an arena with a roof to keep all the rain off... If possible.

I can assure you anything you have heard about recruitment at Albert Park will be way off, we have a couple of new blokes but mostly just the same guys as last year.
Eltham will be early runners without a doubt, maybe learnt a few things about finals footy the last couple and have a good year.
Box Hill will be decent and obviously the 4 new unknown teams.

Are we have some quality back;)in the thread, thankyou for the support spy1,am pleased that some still have the ability of comprehension, late night posting due to to much paperwork:mad:.
The brain beneath my skid lid has told me that callitasitiz may be a certain medditerrrranean manipulator of some repute???
From what I have read here I hope someone from VAFA is monitoring this thread, there are some good ideas floating around here, maybe someone should organise a meeting between VAFA and the thread members, some common sense being written here, and all ideas and aspects should be considered valuable and looked at!
Oops, maybe I should log onto Career One and start looking now:D
Ayyy Nellup Again what were you doing POSTING at that hour in the night and asking for Spy1s hand, or little pinkie. Might be going blind?
