Papaluca is enjoying his footy and playing with mates. No pressure until later in the big game. Bulleen have lost too many to be competitive with St Marys and Eltham but ak with the rest to put up a show.
Falcons and Box Hill were good efforts from both all day. In perfect conditions the skill level was poor but a close match in the end. Falcons gutted kicking themselves out of the game and another injury. Box Hill deserved win with effort but lucky. Falcons will struggle with top 2 sides as the rest of the comp will. Injuries are killing them. Box Hill not flatering. Do not look to have picked up anything but time will tell. Bedford getting best from his group.
Tips.
Sth Morny by 43 against NB Eltham by 13 goals with UHS St Marys by 9 goals from Box Hill Mt Lilydale by 7 goals with Bulleen Falcons by 6 goals over Snakes and Eley Park Syndal coin in the air. Eley by 3 goals.
Will any team upset Eltham or St Marys apart from each other all season?
Saw UHS first hand on the weekend. They were very impressive. Such a good midfield. They will be a real test for Eltham - I'll say Eltham just, but will be a good contest.

Can anyone tell me more about Box Hill, who are there Guns (apart from Penny)?
What are their midfield/back-line like?
From what people are saying I might need to change my prediction and go with St Mary's.

Guns apart from Mick Penny? Hmmm.
Mick's brother Dan goes alright upforward. Made the D4 team of the year lin his 2 seasons in this comp.
Another in the Team of the year last year was C. Liston CHB/Full Back and aspiring ruckman. Tall and very quick.
Odza and Riscalla have been good on ballers for years and a lot of flexible players who can rotate to many positions.
I suppose Martini, when playing is always a danger.
Ed Sill seems to be a fan of Langley.

I am guessing when he said Penny he meant Dan, best small forward in the comp by a mile, can kick them from anywhere and is also captain this year. Uses his body perfectly and just does not miss.
The other one is Aff (Odza) smart footballer and great skills, not overly quick but knows where to be. The rest of the team are pretty equal across the board after those two, stop them and you will go a long way towards a win.

Odza! I forgot about him. Who from St Mary's will take him? Murphy?
As good as Odza is I still see Penny as the Danger man. Do St Mary's have a match up for him?
Also I've just had a bit of a look at Riscalla's stats 6 goals for a Midfielder is pretty good. He's definately one to worry about. 7 Goals from Langely is also pretty good. Looks like they have plenty of avenues to goal.
Playing this weekend Falcons07? Seniors or Reserves?

Not much talk about UHS-VU on here so far this season? What are some thoughts on them from those who have played them apart from being young & quick as already mentioned? Whyte & Kirk have kicked a few goals, but is there anyone worth watching this week at the turtle dome?
Also some ripper matches this week, St Mary's vs BHN should see where BHN are at? Mt Lilydale & Bulleen will see one team with there first win for the season, Eley Park & Sydnal is a tough one to pick? and Mornington & Albert Park would be expected to win at home but who knows?

Hahaha seniors mate, usually play seniors but with 10 of our best players and 18 from the club overall gone would think it was a certainty.
Well I MAY be getting a run in the magoos this week.... MAY :)

UHS-VU are a good side. Will be hard to keep them out of the 4. Really good midfield - great at stoppages - pretty fit side with a massive unit at Full forward. They were better than I thought they would be. Number 1, 4 & 6 get a stack of the footy. Sorry, don't no names and player histories!!

With D4's #1 Ruckman McIndoe (AP) going down, how do the ruckmen look around the comp?

Eltham have recuited a pretty darn good ruckman, he came down with Garrard, he is got injured round 1, but back in round 6-7 i think, he would be close to the best ruckman in D4....
Here's a question, who would u rather in your 'D4' side?
D.Penny or A.Papaluca - from what i've seen in D4 Penny is more valuable

I haven't seen much of of Papaluca but I would say I'd rather have Dan Penny. Quick, Strong Body, Hard at the Footy, Good Mark, Great Kick, Won Games of his boot. Easily the best small forward in D4.

D. Penny also plays on ball a bit too. Could we see a dream match up this week?

Hi Coach
I would say that Rick Watts would be one to definately see. (Wears number 1 jumper I think). From what I'm told at UHS VU he is a great player. I've been meaning to go and have a look at him play but haven't as yet. He has been in their best each week. A midfield player who is playing in a grade much below him. Let me know how he goes if you see him have a run.

Big game up at Ferndale Park on Saturday.
The West Coast St Mary's unbeaten run on the line with the rampaging Box Hill Nth. Word from the track is that Chicken may have a pivotal role with a tag on Papaluca and big Al may have a run on the ball. Dan Penny has been ultra impressive switching to and from from half back to a forward pocket. Huge week on the track from Martini with a bag in the first qurater at short odds. Any injury concerns for the Saints?

If St Marys are anywhere near as good as expected they will easily roll BHN, after playing both Eltham and BHN, Eltham were awesome and got rolled bt STMs.
To me there is no comparison between the standards of BHN and Turtles, BHN good side but Turtles a stand out.

BHN were miles better than the Turtles in the finals last year so unless you can directly compare their recruits for this season, I'm not sure that I'd be sticking the Turtles on a pedestal. Thet were on that same pedestal this time last year and look what happened. I have no bias towards BHN or negative feeling towards Eltham - just not convinced.

BHN no noted recruits, Eltham at least 4 or 5 top class players including there playing coach who is a gun.
And I am not talking about later in the year I am talking right now, we lost the game at BHN home ground and just, they were the better side but Eltham were miles ahead of anything BHN produced that day!

Definitely fitter, younger but also got the old heads around for leadership, just a good quality side with no obvious weaknesses. Cant go past Blagrove and Garard both of them, plus a couple of new young kids I dont know who play in the midfield who just dont stop running.
Like someone said Eltham went out straight sets last year and BHN were very good against the House before finals, I dont want to sound like sour grapes because we got done on the weekend and I have no doubt BHN will be there abouts come September. Just after playing them both Eltham were a class above.

Don't believe everything you might hear along the way.
Joe D'Angelo was a very, very good coach who was made a life member of the club at the end of 2005. He was one of the most important mainstays of the club over the last ten years. He left of his own volition. He is welcome at Bulleen any time & receives a very warm welcome whenever he attends the club. I'm sure that the only regret that either Joe or the club would have is that Bulleen weren't able to win the flag under his coaching.
Ben Cookson has won the last 3 B&F's at our club. Even guys from clubs that regularly finish down toward the bottom of the ladder would acknowledge how difficult that sort of feat is. Ben could have suffered from the accusation in his first year of not earning much of his own footy. However I don't believe this to be a fair accusastion over the last year or so. He is not the sort of player to burst through packs, but at his size that is not a fair expectation.
Both Ben & Joe will always be welcome at our club & to the best of my knowledge there is no acrimony toward either of them.

I can't agree with all of that InFineForm.
Joe left because of family and work - fair enough - no hard feelings - welcome him - whatever!
Ben on the otherhand is soft. You don't leave because as he has said we are a S$!t team and won't win a game. He needs to remember he was part of that team - or at least was supposed to be. Of the two games he palyed you would have hardly said he was a standout. Never one to do many of the hard yards either getting his own footy or on the track. I guess you expect better from the club vice captain and 3 time B & F winner.

FYI - A.McLaren didn't meet the selection criteria for Round 1 as didn't G.Turner who I both believe made the Scribes team of the year last season? They missed alot of pre season and had to earn there spots through the Magoo's as have a number of other guys the last few weeks.
As for BHN being better than the turtles in last years finals series? Neither won a game, so how can you judge that? It's a new season anyhow & the turtles will improve more from last years experience than i'd expect BHN too?;) If not we'll all see in Round 6 at the turtle dome then won't we?

As for leaving Bulleen goes that is not the case, the reason to why I missed the game last week was due to injury. I love the club and blokes that play at bulleen. As for fatherlion how do you think you would go training 3 nights a week for a premier cricket club and then trying to get down to footy training? BHN were much better than the Turtles in last years final series. Lost to the eventual premiers by less than 10 points. Eltham were beaten convincingly by both Powerhouse and Hawthorn. Powerhouse then went on to beat Hawthorn.
I would expect both teams to show improvement after failing in the finals.
If I recall correctly wasn't it BHN who ended the Turtles undefeated run last season? and wasn't it at the turtle dome?

We got pumped by Eltham, we had 8 seniors out on the weekend and lost another first quarter and were leading with a couple of minutes to go against BHN, better than us on the day yes, better than Eltham no where near it.

Just stating the facts from last year.
Do they have any bearing on form this year, NO. But BHN were better than the turtles in last years finals.
I look forward to every round of D4 footy but I wouldn't be betting against Eltham at home in Round 6. 10 new Players is a huge number in the 1's, no wonder there 2's have a percentage of 600.
One thing I can tell you about D4 footy is that the competition looks pretty even and exciting (as it was last year).
The only thing you can take from last year is that football is not always predictable. Last season Eltham played BH of the ground at BH in the first meeting. Then BH one in the wet at Research.
Both teams suffered from loss of key players (injuries) during the season. Eltham suffered late where BH had a tough run in mid season.
Better players will perform most weeks. The mid to lower range players can have weekly changes in form or suffer from long droughts of form. A teams overall form can change quite a lot from one game to the next.
Good depth and a helpful run on the injury front is the key to a successful season.
Both BH and Eltham seem to have decent ressies sides at present. So no matter how they may drop the odd game here and there, both seem well set up to make it to the business end of the season. And like this weekend, there will be a few cracking match ups, that could go either way on the day. But overall are not necessarily a guide to how they will fair in 2, 4 or 18 weeks time.

Sorry to bring this great tread down – but it is time I jumped on here and made it clear who I am and what is going on. I am Plugger – I wear 28 at Bulleen (Sorry Rocket). Over the last 12 months plenty of people have been on this site and have tried to pass themselves of as me. A few notable examples being Cobrawoes and today Fatherlion.
Grow up people. Bulleen is a great footy club – I love it with a passion – as I expressed at the club meeting last year.
This thread is supposed to be about news in d4 footy. That’s what it should be all about.
Let’s keep all the footy talk positive – I am very glad to here that Cookson hasn’t left – as has been well documented on the thread we certainly need him – he is a very valuable player to the club, and clearly a player other clubs need to keep an eye on.
SO to all those who want to pass themselves off as me – well let’s leave me to being me and why don’t you come out and make yourself known. You are clearly from Bulleen so how about showing yourself and having a crack face to face.
With all that said – I am picking Bulleen to win this week – we have improved significantly over the first 3 rounds, and last week we played a really good side in St Mary’s. They will go far this year. So come on Cobras out there – let’s get behind the club. We have had a tough start to the year and we need to keep together as a group and improve as a club. The magoo’s need to keep plugging away too – we played the 2nd half with 16 guys on the weekend so if you read this site and haven’t been down to the club this year, please come down and lend a hand – a full team will see us get close to a lot of teams.

Thanks Knackers - I spoke to Ben today and he can't believe all the talk on here. Too many people are too willing to stick the knives in good people. Happens in all things.
You guys were great on the weekend. Was a bit harsh your coach giving you all a spray after the game though? What was said in that??
Good words Plugger - Is Wayne Olney still involved (posted earlier but no response) - he put in for years! Has he moved or what??? Good luck against the Dales.

Unfortunately there was an 'event' which took place which resulted in Wayne moving away from the club.
It was disappointing as Wayne, for all the time & effort he put into the place.

Nah - a bit more to it than that. Out of respect for Wayne & the work that he did put in I'll leave it at that.

Wow, huge couple of days on the forum boys. Very interesting reading indeed - very glad to see Cookson and friends ark up. The crack at him about being weak was way out of line.
Spewing North Brunny has to travel to South Mornington this week - SOUTH MORNINGTON! its not even north or west mornington - its the other end of the earth. Ridiculously long way to travel to play local footy.
Thrilled to bits they joined the league!
Ozza (or anyone else), how does the ruck department look for UHS?
With D4's #1 Ruckman McIndoe (AP) going down, how do the ruckmen look around the comp?
UHS-VU ruck was solid but nothing to lose sleep over. I think Manny and Big Waz would agree that North Brun have a pretty handy ruck in Clifton. But our other Ruck, Tannous went down 2 minutes into the first game - which has meant he has had to shoulder the load - with some help from Moose.
Our ruck stocks will be a strong suit for us once Tannous is back. Quality big men are hard to replace in any league.

OK Round 4 tips - Turtles, Saints, Mornington, Lilydale, Falcons & No Idea in the last? but i'll go with Manny's mob for now.

Yeah down at Eley park a player by the name of John "the bear" Alexandrides is killing it. Hard at it and best skills in the comp.
Eley park will get back on track with a win this week, with there 2's to keep the winning form going as well!!
Fair call, wasnt having a crack just found it funny.
So lets get some tips going for this round?
Also has anyone seen any guns playing in any teams not spoken about?

Go Cobras
Plugger out.
Great words Plugger!
I have played a fair bit of footy against your mob, mainly in the two's. They are a great club and will no doubt bounce back as they deserve too!
Just remember it wasn't that long ago the turtles where struggling for numbers in their two's and getting smashed each week! Look at them now!
Good luck for the year

Surely he would have expected that kind of attention? He is after all the most talked about player in football history through no fault of his own!
This weekends results will have little bearing on what happens at the end of the season. The 2006 fluctuations in form of a couple of teams that have been mentioned recently (yes BHN and Eltham) show that your early season form is not the be all and end all.

Having seen Papa on the weekend, I'll say he is a quality footballer. Dave Trinchi ran with him all day and did a good job of keeping him quiet, but when he got a bit of space he was damaging. He ran hard and to the right places. I think a post a week or so ago said it all - it talked about Papa's opponents and players wanting to test themselves - he will need to expect people getting up to play against him

Thanks Lakey11. I have probably played against you as I only play ressies. All teams go through patches - we have been there abouts for the last few years - a year of re-building shouldn't be too bad for the cobras. We have recruited a lot of new players who haven't played alot of footy, they have talent and a year of footy under their belt will make them better players next year. The improvement in these guys even over the 1st 3 rounds has been astonishing.

Will be interesting to see how Uni High goes when they come across some of the stronger sides. I see they play St Marys twice in 5 weeks due to the first 2 rounds being changed. That will certainly be interesting.
One thing that is apparent early is that there is a big difference between the top sides and the bottom sides and i sincerly hope as the season goes on this evens out and the whole grade becomes more competitive.
P.S- I think the weather could play havoc with some of the results this weekend with the fitter running sides having the edge over the bigger sides.

They are the top 4 teams, I have no doubt about that. People are suggesting there's a gulf between the apparent top 2 - St Mary's and Eltham - and the others.
Early form suggests this, but as I said alot can change. Your adopted club have started this season on fire similar to last season and we all know what happened last season.

I think that the gap this year is the most it has been in years. D4 has traditionally been very even, but this year the demise of our boys and possibly Nth Bruns not winning games has hurt. Whislt not being a powerhouse of the last 2 years in particular Nth Bruns have been very tough opponents and have kept many a team honest. It has also been interesting that over the last few years the teams coming down from d3 have gone up pretty quickly again, so this suggests that UHSVU and St Mary's will have good seasons. Eltham have been improving and need a bit of luck and BHN have improved rapidly over the last 18mths. So they are the top 4 for mine. Sth Mornington are still an unknown and Richmond are already much better but I don't think they will have the teams to consistently trouble the top 4 and the clubs around them.

Good call mate alot can change and probably will? All that we can all do is get up for each match as it comes around, but a crystal ball would be handy wouldn't it!!
As for an adopted club, I'd have to say that they should probably have been my orginal club if not for the different path I chose from Junior footy seeing I have lived about 500m from the club for about 21 years? A new team and a new season should also change what happened last year, it will be exciting for us all down at the turtles to turn it around this season. We have plenty of motivation from that, that's for sure!;)

Not sure what the issue has been the last couple of years, i'm always impressed with the quality of football Eltham plays. Seeing names like McLaren, Galvin and Andrews in reserves squads indicates a fair bit of depth (even if some of those were disciplinary selections) so it could very well be the year for Eltham to achieve what they're capable of.
I would prefer you didn't though. ;)

Not so sure I would right off Sth Motnington yet; and Albert Park have huge potential to cut through an opposition if they can ever get rid of the injury curse.

You may be right there spy. South will only get better, but might have to wait until next year. Albert Park seem to match up better against some sides and not so well against others; if they played top footy every week they could go a long way.

South Mornington have the potential to be a good side in this grade. If Tim Allen (former St Kilda / Hawthorn player) who is on their list gets out on the park he will win games off his own boat. One of the best local players Ive seen play when playing with Mornington in the MPNFL. Will carve D4 Ammos up. Having said that I think he will only play a handful of games for them but watch out when he does!!

The gulf between Eltham, St Marys and the rest is enormous and results reflect this so far. As for the other 2 finals sides looks a 3 way race between UHS, Box Hill and the Falcons. If Falcons have any luck with injury put them in the picture ahead of Box Hill.

South Mornington are definitely going to be a team of the future. All young hard running and tackling players. Although they could do with a good hairdresser down that way.
Although Eltham lost to Saint Mary's i think they would be my favourites for the flag. A lot of great players that have come across from juniors in the DVFL. Good to see Stricko down there. Hate to have to play against him rather than with him but hopefully he is up in the one's soon.
Albert Park will definately be up there at the end of the season, especially if it stays dry with the amount of talls they have. I agree with Falcon that BHN are definately the underdogs going into this weeks game. BHN have had some good wins but seem to always peak a bit more towards the end of the season. I think they will have to work extremely hard though to come close to St Mary's or Eltham this year.
I personally can't wait to play against both of the Saints and Turtles as they are the best of the best this year. I guess when it really comes down to it that's what footy is about. I think it's good to see how positive the games have been so far this year. Seems like all of the teams seem to be playing fair and we are not having to deal with any w**nkers like Hawthorn last year. Only one D4 player been to the tribunal so far this year. Keep up the good work boys.

What D4 will come down to is the team that wants it more.

Bit harsh on Hawthorn Chewy. They were good last year.
Rain? Haven't really had a lot of the wet stuff and the grounds will soak it up like a sponge........no issue this weekend.
Looking forward to watching Papaloma or whatever his name when I can get to a game - you St Marys blokes have certainly talked him up. Talk about put a kid under pressure.
Hawthorn are the most pathetic team to have played in D4. Never before have I played against such a dirty, unsportsmanlike, whinging, crying, sniping team like them.

Agree Spy 1. Went to school with Ed (B Grade side) and they had a big go to get him to take over as President two years ago. Wasnt a good time work wise as he had just taken over as CEO of a large multinational. Plus he was never likely to leave Hawthorn having started the club with a few mates 10 years ago. I know he was concerned about how the club was viewed and has targeted 2-3 guys who are causing the most grief. Tends not to lose his battles (except with his waistline!).

I disliked hawthorn as much as anyone, but give credit where credit is due. JP is a good bloke & I know of a few other blokes that played at Hawthorn who were good guys.
There was a comment earlier about a few guys that Ed Sill is trying to take care of. Good luck to him because everyone who played against them last year knows who the tossers were....
At the same time, every club has a tosser or two playing for them. Put any random 50+ blokes together & there will be at least 2-3 that you'd prefer not to share space with. That's just a fact of life.

The train is approaching very fast and it looks like express through box hill this week. Have heard they have a chance against us and while i dont doubt it, it will be a tough match up. Can Box Hill dominate the air and hit targets all day. They will need to. The Saints have recruited a lad this week who should give us such much needed height and marking power up the forward line. 6 ft 4 " 100 kg. aka Shane Watson.
I am expecting a close and uncompromising affair with the winner likely to go a game clear on top depending on Eltham doing the right thing against the Uni boys.
Good luck to all players for saturday and dont forget that Saint Mary's are holding their past Captains & Coaches for a luncheon so there will be alot support for the saints which is 75 years old this year.
If you want to come down to see a real grass roots footy match this year come down and support the boys from Ferndale.
In Other games this week South Morny to smash North Brunswick
Uni will struggle to kick goals out at turtle park and will go down by 40+
Mt Lilydale to register their first win against Bulleen and get the ball rolling(will win between 7 - 10 games this year.)
Albert Park will be ignited by the one that got away last week and return in fine form against Richmond.
Finally the televised match of the round at HQ sees Eley Park take on the Sinners. Sinners for me in a good contest but not by much.

Sth Mornington with a big win over Nth Brunswick, Eltham comfortably from UHS by 8 goals plus, Mt Lilydale with a well deserved 4 points from Bulleen, Albert Park to tame the Snakes by 30 points and Eley Park just a maybe against the Sinners.

I wouldn't get too excited about recruiting him if I was you though, doubt he will play more than 4-5 matches for the season after his brief apparence at Ivanhoe last year.
