I know a lot of the umpires in lower grades ( I play Clubbies)
What does this Patrick bloke look like? I want to know if I ever come across him!!
Sorry Bomber. Can't tell you. I've had brain cleansing, meditative, hypnotic therapy to rid my memories of him. I woke up on Sunday morning, having ground my teeth down to the gums after having nightmares all Saturday night. It was the only remedy that my psychiatrist could recommend!

Bad luck Eley park... thats a tough way to lose. Its a bad time to run into the snakesd too... We're on a roll baby!
3 in a Row BigWaz, you're on fire!!!
Fish, Grubby and Nuske are certainly giving you a lot of goal scoring power.
Should be a cracker between you an Eley Park!
When was the last time RC won 5 games in a season?
Howdy ya'll,
Read an interesting email from the VAFA regarding umpire retention in their league. Apparently there are a few umpires that have decided not to continue due to the abuse they recieve from the sidelines.
I understand that they do this for the love of the game and for the love of umpiring. I also understand that they are very amatuer. It's pretty sad that this has to happen. It's just a game...
My opinion is that there are two sides to this dilemma.
1. Clubs MUST be aware that there people out there who love to abuse umpires on a weekly basis. This has to stop, if it doesn't there is definately going to be a shortage of umpires. These people must be dealt with accordingly...
2. Umpires must understand that their inconsistency can be frustrating for players and spectators alike. I know that they are amatuer umpires but it may help to be a little consistent (especially club umpires in the reserves games).
I really hope that this abuse toward umpires stops. I really hope that umpires become more consistent.
At the end of the day we must respect the officials, they take their time out to umpire for us like we take our time out to play this marvellous game.

very hard in the thick of things when your busting your arse on the ground and an official gives a wrong decision that rips your heart out and not say anything.
From the sounds of things from this forum and from experience as a player, this has been the worst year umpiring wise thus far since ive been around.
We pay enough in fees that umpires can get paid more to get more umpires and hopefully this results in better umpires being around. I think VAFA should spend less time worrying about clubs and supporters and find the source of the frustration.
Ok I've kept out of this ump thing so far but enough is enough,Spy,I respectyou and your club, but when you name an ump their needs to be some tempering of remarks, that goes for all, everyone knows who I am ,and that was my choice,I'm a big boy now and can look after myself, this bloke had no say in his name being made public.
Sixty five, reasonable comments, you say "umps take their time out to umpire for us",we do it for the same reason all of you do,because we love umpiring as much as you love playing and coaching,if their are no players we can't play our sport and if their are no umps players can't play,we have to meet somewhere in the middle.Personally after my senior game on sat .I do 2 games in u17 for a junior league on sun,1st at 12 2nd at 2.15,shortage of kids their too,so some vafa umps go down to help the young ones learn, these kids are my replacements, and I know for some of you that can't come quick enough, hah hah.
Buckaz, you speak of money, and yes we do get paid and I agree none of the players do,but lets be realistic,my money disappears after 2 training nights and travel to grounds and uniforms, especially since the tax office has now ruled our umpiring a hobby,no more claims for anything.
You both speak of consistency, most of the rules have to be judged by the ump, their opinion, was he held? did he have prior? was it too high?,get the picture, and all this has to be decide in the blink of an eye and under pressure;do you all think we don't try to be consistent? Just as a player tries to kick through the centre every time,we try to be consistent, then add in you have two umps, two different people, do I have to say this adds yet another factor,we try to overcome this with our pre match meeting.
I played for many years, reported more times than i will admit too as well,I do understand the frustration,I will say this for VAFA,they are trying, believe it or not Brian Goodman's door is always open, suggestions and discusions always welcome.
Many of us are constantly trying to improve our umpiring just as players are trying to improve, there is not a game goes by that I do not say,"don't do that again tug"and so we all improve.
No one more than me would like to walk of the field and say "I didn't stuff up today",hasn't happened yet,but then I doubt that players could say that either.
You can take this as yet another maggot speech, or as it is intended, as a genuine attempt to get umps and players on the same page,I don't want upset players on the field but I have to do my job,and every ruling i make upsets someone.
As a end to this epic I will pass on something from one of my trainers, many years back.
"When an ump gives a free, they are telling the player, you have done something wrong, and no one likes being told they have done something wrong, then the ump awards the free and adds insult to injury by punishing the player,no wonder we aren't loved."
Cheers
Tugger

BTW Waz, the man with the curly hair is George. I met a couple of the other boys and also George's squeeze Felicia. Just mention Mount Evelyn next time you bump into them. Can't wait for the movie to come out - play Spot The Ammos in the various teams. One of the Hated Opposition Nobodies is an A grader for Brighton, yet one of the stars is a ressies player for St Johns in D2!
Great to see the Snakes get three on the trot. Keep 'em pumped! though obviously not with your busted wrist - use the other one

I don't give tips and this is nit picking I know; but BHN was the actual away team. Played on the back ground at Elgar and Eley Park had all match day duties. The matches were reversed from earlier in the year. So Away Teams got 2 on the weekend. Can't understand why Away hasn't complained himself.:p
Nelly is probably right, I should not have named the umpire I thought ruined the game as a spectacle on Saturday.
I still feel very strongly about this individual though. Is there a point where an umpire is seen to be that bad, as judged by his own obsevers, that he is given a pink slip?
The reason I ask is this. If a player is seen as responsible for causing violence by his actions his club will (or should) ask him to leave.
We all regret the difficulty in getting and retaining umpires. I am one of the biggest supporters of giving them a fair go.
I don't know what the reason for it is, but this person has umpired a game I have watched 5 times, and he is getting worse. He is a danger to the players and possibly to himself if this is allowed to continue. I don't know the man personally. Unfortunately he has never stayed for a drink at any of these games. He may be a great person away from the game and I wish him no ill in his life. But action needs to be taken. The time for being 'PC' is past in this instance.

Couldnt agree more Spy, as long as we keep accepting disgraceful performances then we will never improve. Umpires like players must be held accountable for their performances. Its not acceptable to receive poor report after poor report and continue to get a job the next week. There is no doubt the umpiring in D4 this year has been at an unacceptable standard. The main talk in the rooms after the games regardless of a win or a loss has been the extraordinary decisions that have been made during the games. It does keep me a little amused however. What is going inside some of their heads I will never know and to provide excuses of "we have to way up so many different interpretations and different decisions and then make a decision in a blink of an eye" That is what umpiring is all about, exactly that!!! Making a correct decision after taking numerous aspect into account. If your not good at that then you should not be umpiring!!!

1. Umpires do a great job with an always hostile audience
2. I reckon they have been good this year?
3. We tend to hear about the bad, not the good.
4. Most come in and have a beer and/or chat - that is always great.
Spy, perhaps a copy of the game can be given to the umpire in question to review his performance? That may help in self assessment and provide an incentive to better future decisions. :)

I will say one thing in their favour, or more to the point, in their defense.
I hear the leadership is somewhat indecisive in what should be interpreted.
If what I hear is true, interpretations are being made to suit poor umpiring rather than saying this is the way it is done, now do it.
If the head is making poor decisions, it is natural that the body will fail.
I hope umpires wanting to do things the right way aren't being held back to cater for those who can't or won't cut the mustard.

Away should have spoken up though if he had a complaint???:)
Only 4 rounds left before finals now & some big games again this week.
Not sure whether Eley Park Vs Richmond or Albert Park Vs BHN is match of the round? Probably the 2nd game as there is more at stake for the winner but I don't know who to tip in either of these matches? Thoughts?

A little quiet on the forum the last few weeks! Not much coming from the St Mary's camp. Perhaps going back to school and focusing on their mathematics! What's the probability of getting 18-0 now? And the lovechild Papaluca is hardly getting a mention either, but he may be injured!
Great to see great supportive banter between the lower/middle sides these days. Not much of the feral naive comments getting earlier in the season but I guess when you are proved not invincible, you shut up quite quickly!

How true.
It is good to see some contructive footy talk and perhaps not so contructive regarding umpires.
Chicken, I believe papaluca played on weekend after missing 5 weeks looking at there team lists hence why quite. Im not suprised the saints are quite after convincing loss on weekend. The rumour has it like everyone else throughout year there injuries are catching up with them.
As for them being quite i think its pretty clear comments were generated not from them as evident in sausage roll who was from another club i believe.
Anyway, my Rd 15 tips
Uni by 78pts over Nth Bwick
Sth Morn vs Syndal - Interesting game here, Syndal by 22pts.
Richmond by 29pts over Eley park
St Marys by 37pts over Bulleen
Eltham by 155pts over Lilydale
Albert Park by 10pts to throw 4th open a bit more.

I agree... both games will be close. I'm surprised that Eley Park got so close to BHN, so their form is obviously good after a big win at bulleen. Richmond has won 3 on the trot but hasn't played on many small grounds this year, so we may be at a disadvantage?
The other game could be a barn stormer.

They were impressive, hard at the footy and the man (nothing dirty). David Payne had about 50 possessions, M. Viola and Cresswell were also very good for Eley Park. Not much in the ruck department. They do tend to run out of legs, cramping early and often.
Eley Park smashed Bulleen and Albert Park had a comfortable win over Bulleen. I think this is a sign that Eley Park are on the improve (either that or Bulleen had a really bad week when the played them).

Would not say good measuring stick Waz. From other scribes it seems Eley Park were better then Box Hill on Saturday and only strengthens the following selections which will give the mountainmen a huge advantage in fourth place.
Tigers take on Syndal. Maybe Sth Morn but wheels are almost off.
Snakes host Sharks. Should be a ripsnorter. Home team perhaps.

Short answer to your question, NO we do not have a coaches group and apart from Saturdays we do not get together other than preseason at VAFA function.
Umpires, you could speak to people from any grade or other leagues and you'll have complaints, they are officials who make decisions where some agree and some dont. I am concerned that umpire numbers are dwindling and would hate to get to a situation where senior games are umpired by club umpires as per ressies.
I strongly demand from my players that they do not get into verbal confrontations with umpires - not all have heeded my demands during the year and they have been benched. Not a lot we can do about supporters, but we can educate our own players and officials.
I'll probably get howled down, but I strongly believe that officials including coaches should be charged with abusive language out of the coaches box/area should be reported and if found guilty suspended - just like players. Definition of an official - Anyone in coaches area/box or carrying out an official task, or known to be an office bearer.
We all have to admit that our respective clubs have had days where decisions seemed to go your way all day, and days where you are on the end of the bad ones, but overall it seems to even out -we only hear of the game decided by an umpiring decision.
Their numbers are dwindling and we need to be very, very careful cause I dont think there is a waiting list to take Patrick or others place.
To conclude coaches should be forced to complete umpire reports every week - I think in the YVMDFL we had to complete umpire report and it was easy to be critical when you lose but I had more follow ups from umpire advisor if I was critical after a win.
Lets get back to talking about the game and forget the umpires.

hitdatarget - may well of been Eley Park seemed to of played the better footy, but could there of been some circumstances that made these teams more even then what ladder positions suggest? game day injuries, suspensions, missing key personal, kicking for goal all could of been a factor.
Dont write BHN off yet from making the Four.
Still plenty of games to go and plenty of surprise results to be had.

No Cheap goals. Most good leads and strong Marks with at least 50% being kicked 40+ meters out from goal! If only he was there from the start could of been useful in a few of the close losses early in the season!

If i recall that was a tough day for big forwards that day, quite windy and wet.

No Cheap goals. Most good leads and strong Marks with at least 50% being kicked 40+ meters out from goal! If only he was there from the start could of been useful in a few of the close losses early in the season!
yeah i have played a lot of footy with this kid he can kick the ball a long, long way. Shows what a new club and new environment does for a player, he was struggling massively at Wyndhamvale, ended up getting dropped to the twos!. Lets hope it continues and you boys get a few more wins up this season. Im glad to see Danny Hickey coaching senior footy again, he is a good coach.

Yeah Danny beens great for us this year. He's brought a lot of professionalism and structure to the club!
was wondering how Troy Whiting was going for Richmond. I see he has kicked near on 30 goals in 5 weeks, but has he been dominating the best defenders or have they been mostly cheap goals?
He's averaging 6 goals a game. Not too shabby. It certainly helps having him and big Ned up in the forward line.

haha Ned. Danny has been trying to get him to play for about 3 years, is he as good as danny says he is?

was it you who was on him? if it was you did a good job, big pat on back for you:)

He is as big as he said he was. Not the fastest man on the track, but he is pretty hard to spoil. Has put on a mean tackle or three this year as well:)

He did a good job in defense... hes kicked 6 or 7 every other game.... pity for us.

Machine did keep the kid quiet that day. But then he also keeps most forwards quiet he takes.
Even though he only got one, you could see the kid was class and not surprised he is racking up those sort of numbers. Hopfully he is loving the club and can be part of a strong foundation for many years to come in the Snake Pit.:thumbsu:

yeah definately he loves his footy, and from what he tells me he loves the club as well. If Richmond and Danny Hickey keep attracting those sorts of players then they will improve dramatically. The improvement this year is evidence enough, considering their last couple of years.

How has Oden been going this year? I noticed that he was named best after the first win of the season but haven't seen his name around much since. What position has he been playing?

He injured his shoulder in the second game. He has started to get his form back over the past month, but the injury really slowed him up.
He could be a terrific player, he is the god of war after all :)

Just a couple of comments.
Great discussion point first of all ruck machine.
You've put Pizzari in - I guess as the 'token' Nth Brunny player as to not offend anyone. Pize has been good this year as always- but G. Holdstock (#23) has been our best this year and would be hard pressed to think of a Centre Half Back thats had a better year. Pullen from Sth Mornington I would think would be amongst it, Carolan from Mt. Lilydale perhaps, definitely at least one or two more from Eltham. BHN players at CHB and FB - comon man. Even we beat you by 11 goals first time around - and we are not exactly a powerhouse of D4, and second time round O'Connor kicked 7 goals against your full back. 2 Eley Park players in the starting 18? They've hardly won a game and have often been flogged and two of their defenders are in there??
Great work putting it on to liven up the forum - but a bit off the mark in my opinion.

An activity like this is always going to be flawed seeing as people can only really judge players based on how they went when you played them.

The bloke who had 7 kicked on him that day was neither of the players named in RM's team. Unfortunately BHNs two best key defenders are also the best 2 ruckman so would spend as much time in either position.
Its definitely a tough exercise - especially with injuries etc. Our best 3 players would have played (maybe) 20 games between them - when they've played they have been our standouts - but haven't got out on the park enough to be considered for this kind of thing.
Bit like Watts for UHS who was probably the form midfielder of the comp for the first 6 rounds - but from what I hear did a knee and it was goodnight nurse.

Exactly right Abba. If the opposition gun is missing or shut down on the day you play them, you have that as your main reference point. I think big Ed has done a sterling job in the last couple of seasons, selecting the team of the year.
I have seen six gun CHFs, 2 very good full forrwards, 3 outstanding ruckman, 4 sterling full backs and too many to count top notch onballers. It can be the case that your clubs best player is an onballer, but may miss out to a Papaluca (there is that name again) and the like from top teams.
As to #35 BHN at full back. As BHN lost their main ruck man early in the season, he has been used in the ruck a lot. Only goes back when they think the opposition have a real gun full forward. He is 6'5", is super quick and has an enormous reach for spoiling. He got taken to the cleaners when injured at St Mary's early this year. But has not even looked like allowing a bag since then. Was rightfully CHB of the '06 D4 team.
I think the only other BHN player that you can say is best at his position is D. Penny. Though just back from a leg strain, and spending quite a bit of time on the ball, he is terribly hard to match up as a small forward who can mark with the big blokes.
Great discussion point though.:thumbsu: Maybe the best way to pick your team is to exclude your own players. Then put your recomendations of who you think have been your best 5 players for your team and where they have played just below your selections.

Whiting was a bit of a standout against you guys... 7 goals in his first game at the club.... i think we only kicked 9 for the game.
Gotta put my tips in... Got six the past two weeks so on a roll...
Syndal to win (Souths are getting seniors to run in the twos due to a serious lack of numbers...they cant have it both ways.)
Richmond to continue their improbable streak.
St Mary's by a comfortable margin.
Lilies need to win, but wont. And that may be the end of the story for the mountaneers.
Box Hill has too much on the line. They win the rematch.
UHS is too strong for the fast fading NB outfit.

Thats sensational. After 4 straight wins I reckon now is about the time to send a message to those one or two idiots who after last season stated the centrals should just give it away. In the words of mark williams "you were wrong!!!" Fortunately the club seems to have had great support on this site from most other clubs, I think those one or two idiots were imposters from the higher grades.

Wow, D4 forum really making it a milestone weekend.
Two losses for North Brunny on the weekend. But given that we were about as undermanned as we have been all year - it was not a bad effort to lose in the ones by 6 goals - with virtually no big men other than the 'Moose'.
UNI High just play good solid team footy. They will take some beating in the finals as they work so well together at the stoppages.

Go centrals for 5 in a row next week. What a phenomenal comeback by the snakes and bad luck to Ely Park losing both games to Snakes in the final term by a small margin - a good game played pretty much in the right spirit.
Nellup I ruck for snakes and I have a question for you about 2 things football:
It seems that some umpires pay the free kick for obstruction by the other ruckman (e.g. forcing the ruckmen to more or less run directly or at a fairly reasonable angle to get a good leaping contest) where others want to encourage a wrestle in the middle by allowing the ruckman to stand in front and use their bodies in the centre bounce to shepherd out the other ruckman (I think this is more ok around the ground). What is the actual rule on this?
In the game on the weekend I took a mark and the defender was on my nose attempting to hold up the play. So I gave him the lightest feather touch palm (imagine petting a new born kitten) to push him away so I could play on and I'm not sure if the ground shook or the wind blew him over or how it happened exactly, but he fell over and you reversed my mark and give him a free. What is the ruling on pushing off defenders to play on?
Thanks
CD
