View Full Version : Carlton - got our short ... got our tall
Got the first midfielder to choose from and the first of the big men. Could not be happier with Muprhy and Kennedy with our top 2 picks.

Agree Lajon. Couldn't be happier with Murphy and Kennedy.

Kennedy could have been taken at 2 or 3 ... I am just happy we had first crack at the talls as well

not bad 3 out 4 is awesome for you guys however edwards is a thug if he gets beaten he loses it and goes for the man, however considering the first 3 picks he is worth the gamble if they can fix his attitude

I think Carlton need a good knuckle man. Unfortunately most our current big guys (outside of Fev & maybe T-bird) lack that bit of mongrel. Normally only the likes of Waite and Scotland fly the flag and prior to them it was mostly poor old Hulmey. Maybe our midfielders will feel less intimidated if their is a loose cannon in the side, ready to back them up.

Are you serious? Another headcase?!
Back to the topic, I thought Hawthorn were certainties to take Kennedy at 3. Obviously the Dale Thomas selection threw everything out of whack. Lucky for us though. We ended up with our 2 prefered players.

Edwards is the son of Butch Edwards so maybe you're a bit bitter we drafted him!;)
But it's great to have drafted three tall KPPs and Hughes just stated Bower will be a monster will he fills out!:)

Are you sure you aren't thinking of John Anthony?

Very solid draft, although they must be looking for midfielders in next year's draft, because I would've thought they could use more than one, unless the draft of Kennedy, Bower and Edwards is going to be used to release Waite and possibly even Fisher into midfield/wing roles.

No, when John Anthony loses it he yells at the closest living thing ;)

The Blues are obviously banking on the late season form of Bentick and Simpson. With Stevens, Walker, Russell, Murphy, Scotland, Carrazzo in the side or coming through, we might be looking okay still.

I wanted one of the express runners as well, but I think given the changes to the priority pick, there was no harm in getting a big injection of height onto the list as it will be harder to do in future. On the other hand, there will always be good runners in most drafts.

Exactly ... we have got a lot of deficiencies in our list and quality KPP is something we're in desperate need of. Hughes appears to have done a fantastic job at this stage.

Don't forget to add Blackwell to that list. He may be small in stature, but he is good in & under and a great reader of the play. And doesn't mind having a dip when things are getting rough.

Plus we have the chance of picking up Sam Sheldon or Tomi Johnston under the F/S next year.
Key position players take longer to develop so it makes sense to take them a year or two before the midfielders as they then hit their straps at the same time theoretically.

Imagine having names like Sheldon, Johnston, Waite & Blackwell running around in the Navy Blue again, almost brings a tear to the eyes.

Wish I saw that older generation. :( My Dad remembers them well....
I think we were gonna get 2 midfielders (with Hurn at 4), but we got lucky and couldn't pass on Kennedy.
Bower was certainly the correct pick as a specialist key defender. Maybe we should've used the 3rd rounder on a midfielder though.... Mind you, it all gets a bit speculative at this point.

played with jakey edwards this year, he is by far not a thug, the kid has his head screwed on very good choice for carlton, he will provide the blues with the goods. bottom age player for the jets this year, he captained the side for most of the year, great footballer and bloke.

Relatively unheard of I must say. Or that could just be the perspective of a Queensland footy supporter.....
Sounds like a development player.

with us taking 3 talls, expect us to use our 3 (???) rookie picks on the next best untried midfielders....(heath hocking, matt white, ryan jackson, etc)

You just focus on your unsuccessful lot. I know it is killing supporters of other clubs that the Blues are finally, fully involved in the draft and able to access the best young talent going around.

I would presume that you are CLEARLY joking, Jake Edwards has one of the best footy attitudes i have seen. Jets are going to miss him in 2006 - he had the tendency to pull the guys into line on a few occassions - great leader will be watching closely when the season starts.

As a Carlton supporter that is great to hear and I only hope that he fulfills his full potential unlike his father who couldn't because of his knee injuries.

I like what I hear about Edwards in this thread. Nice to get some players with a good attitude for once.
Also read on another site he was in the top 5 at the draft camp and state screening attendees in the 5, 10 and 20 metre sprints.
Hopefully he can play footy and we could have a real gem on our hands.
Like what i'm hearing about Edwards the more I read about him.
His a great kid - he mentioned that in the chance that he got drafted he would be down at jets training tonight so i'm pretty sure he will be at training tonight to say goodbye to his fellow players and staff.
Really looks like Hughes has done his homework with Jake Edwards. All sounds very promising.

fair point - welcome back Blues
always had a lot of respect for Pagan anf thought that he and the long-suffering fans have been the ones to cop it for the actions of boardroom criminals like Elliot and Oakley (have a I named the right bloke here??)
i personally think draft picks are too big a punishment because the punishment can last 5-10 years - it has ripped the abolsute guts out of the Blues no doubt
if you want to stop salary cap cheating, then suspend the players for a full season and jail the administrators involved for criminal fraud
if Jack had spent 6 mths inside, even in low security, then that would have been the end to salary cap rorting in this code and others too!
peace

He'll become the fourth generation of his family to play league football if and when he makes his debut for the Blues...

It's a great story that of Edwards. Can't wait 'til the 2006 season comes about.
Whoever said Edwards has bad attitude is a ****************. Best attitude going around this guy, he will work his arse of down at Carlton and love doing it. He loves the game and will be a quality footballer with Carlton in years to come.

Well said again, Beatnik. The real victims of these penalties have been the Carlton members and diehard supporters (probably one & the same). Certainly I think those officials responsible for breaking the laws have basically got off scot-free and are still sitting in their corporate boxes sipping champers and doing business deals, oblivious to the pain being felt by the people that keep the club going. I look forward to the gradual steps forward that will be made over the next couple of seasons before the mighty Blues start challenging for the premiership in 3-4 years time.
