I'm very happy with N.Jones, haven't heard of the other 3 players we got though!
Thought West Coast were big winners and Collingwood made some surprising calls.
hawks - went great, managed to take ellis and dowler. got muston and birchall and picked up bailey, 205cm giant. two big thumbs up.

Not sure really. Drum is rated highly but he is still a HBF. And Ibbotson and Warnock are developing
Woodstock..

 still confused why we didnt pick ellis at 2, we could have had a chance to get thomas at 5. Very happy with stanley but.

Lower @ #30 - Early. Very early.
Carlile @ #46 - Why not Alan Obst?
Minson @ 70ish - An OK pick
Jonathan Giles @ 70ish - WHO?
Happy with Carltons effort. :thumbsu:

I have a feeling the Hawks suckered the Pies by spreading the whisper they were going to take Thomas with #3 - I think the Hawks really wanted Ellis.
I reckon Collingwood could have got Ellis and Thomas.
Thomas - Happy
Pendlebury - Happy
Stanley - Very Happy
All 3 are the quick midfielders with good skills that we needed.
Cook - Unknown, project player, bit early in draft.
Anthony - Happy

Hawthorn said they were gonna take Ellis if we didn't, nothing about Thomas.

I'd heard big whispers we wanted Thomas at 3, whereas Collingwood wanted him at 5. They lept early.

It's hard to say how the swans went. Laidlaw sounds interesting, but I really don't know why we didn't get any talls seeing thats one area we are lacking in depth.

26 Nov 2005, 10:26
Tigers did well.Everything went to plan according to those who went to the Tuesday meeting.
Oakley-Nichols was our prefered option if highly rated Kpp,s had gone by 8[they did of coarse. We had gone cold on Clarke].At 24 we were hoping someone like Hughes but highly unlikely there[Bonus].
Travis Casserley was on the list and was actually pencilled in at 24 should our other choices didnt fall our way.
Overall im happy.

I thought the whisper this morning was that the Hawks were going to take Thomas with #3 - that meant that Collingwood had to take him at #2 if they really wanted him - I think the Hawks were just playing with us in order to get us to choose Thomas over Ellis, thus allowing Ellis to be taken by then.
We should have just taken Ellis at #2 and I bet we could have then taken Thomas at #3

But Thomas could turn out to be alot better then Ellis - its too early to tell doof

Quite true. I still think we got played - even though it may work to Collingwood's benefit in the end ;-)

Very happy with West Coast's effort.
Agreed.
Thought Collingwoods draft was interesting. Generally worrying when all of your picks were well before the projections in the various "mock" drafts. Obviously, they might work out ok but they were "brave" selections.
Cheers.

Im very happy with essendon choices we got 3 all australians in Ryder possibly the most gifted big man in the draft, Lonergan who has pace and is good inside midfielder and Lucy who is all australian full back with pace that likes to kick the ball long.
We also got dempsey who is likened to winmar however he'll have to bulk up, i would've prefered ryan cook or stanley with this selection but im not the analytical expert, in years to come people might say how did this kid make it to pick 19. On the other hand we as essendon supporters might say not another darren walsh.
still 3 all aussies out of 4 picks is great

We got...
-A quick creative midfielder in Ellis.
-Bonafide Full Forward in Dowler.
-Tall versatile damaging player in Birchall. Can play wing, mid, foward, back. Goddard-esque.
-Developing 205cm ruckman.
-A risk, but a potentially huge gain in Beau Muston.
-Travis Tuck, another creative mid.

I have no idea how my club went but with picks 1, 4 and 20 it's hard to go wrong.

#16: Richard Douglas - A bit of a surprise but it sounds like the kid can play and is the sort of player we needed. Reasonably happy.
#17: Darren Pfeiffer- Absolutely stoked
#32: Bernie Vince - a bit of a surprise with pick 32 but a very handy player that can kick a goal. Can also play in the midfield. Reasonably happy
#48: Alan Obst - VERY happy with this pick up at this selection :thumbsu:

From the little I know of Hughes & Oakley-Nichols Richmond looks to have got a decent midfeilder & KPP prospect. :thumbsu:
Casserley should be intersting.

Cats did great picking up Varcoe. Exciting prospect who could"ve gone Top 5 if not injured this year. Happy with Trent West too our 2nd pref ruckman behind Bailey

Why am I not surprised the Crows went for a local with that pick? :p

I didn't expect Kennedy to last to pick 4, so it's nice to get some luck for a change.
Best small in the draft, then the best tall. Great start!
Bower and Edwards are interesting choices. It seems we really wanted to go tall in this draft.
Overall I'm pretty rapt. Hard to fail when you have picks 1 and 4 though.

My first instinct on who got the best selections based on the picks that each team had:
West Coast
#13 - Hurn
#29 - McKinley
#34 - Spangher
Got a previously highly touted mid for a steal, a goal kicker and a defender who have all been rated better than they eventually went for.
Essendon
#7 - Ryder
#19 - Dempsey
#50 - Lonergan
#66 - Lucy
On top of Neagle as a F/S selection, they certainly got Ryder lower than he was forecast and Lucy at one stage was tipped to go at #9 to Brisbane. Who knows how overrated they are but they scored big according to pre-draft forecasts.
Richmond
#8 - Oakley-Nicholls
#24 - Hughes
#40 - Casserly
Solid effort IMO
Carlton
#1 - Murphy
#4 - Kennedy
#20 - Bower
#36 - Edwards
Very happy with what we got. 3 KPP with some versatility and the best midfielder. Rated lower because they fell into our laps a little bit. Not 100% that Bower and Edwards were the best in their positions for the picks taken but they are awfully close.
Hawthorn
#3 - Ellis
#6 - Dowler
#14 - Birchall
#18 - Bailey
#22 - Muston
Combined with Tuck as a F/S selection, the Hawks have done extremely well. Would be rapt with at least 4 of those selections and where they got them. Only diversion was Bailey at #18 but ruck selections are often surprising. On the surface they look to have elevated themselves to picks 2 and 5. In time though the Pies may look like geniuses.

St Kilda
#33 St Kilda Sam Gilbert SOUTHPORT 19-08-1986 193.7 81.8
- to replentish our tall defensive stocks
#49 St Kilda Michael Rix COBURG 08-01-1981 199 95
- to add depth to our ruck stocks
#63 St Kilda Phillip Raymond GLENELG 24-06-1987 185.6 69.25
- medium forward
#71 St Kilda Justin Sweeney TYABB 25-12-1987
- don't know anything about him
Eagles definetly did extremely well, Hurn, McKinley (a guy we rated as top 15 and a replacement for Phil) and Spangahner a good defensive prospect, im over the moon.

Very well, although our idiot fans won't realise that until they see the pace and class that Thomas and Pendlebury add to our midfield and the mongrel that Stanley and Anthony add to our defense.
I'm ambivalent about the Ryan Cook pick. I think it's way too early for him, but he's young and our recruiting staff obviously see something in him. To take him at #23 instead of leaving him for #37 shows that we knew another club with a pick in that space rated him as well. I'll wait and see on him.

Our first pick in Varcoe is a good one. Would have been a priority pick if not for injury. Will compliment our list nicely.
Got the best victorian ruckman which is good.
I think the other three are project players who I know little about.
Overall - Very pleased. Especially will getting Travis :D
Quite true. I still think we got played - even though it may work to Collingwood's benefit in the end ;-)

Not happy at all. Three midfielders? There's about thirty onballers/flankers on the list now.
Delighted. Nathan Jones was Melbourne's primary target in this draft and we got him.
The concerns about the midfield that were evident after 2003 have been thoroughly addressed since. Brock McLean, Colin Sylvia, Brent Moloney, Byron Pickett and Nathan Jones have all joined the club since.
Add that quintet to Yze, Green, Bruce and Johnstone, with White in the ruck, and I'm quietly optimistic for the next two or three seasons.

Riggio - Happy, but may have picked him up too early
Swallow - Very happy
Green - Meh
Hutchison - Don't know much about him
They were alright, thought we might of taken jones at 7 though.
