Richard Douglas, Darren Pfeiffer, Bernie Vince and Alan Obst!:)

Those of you who are disappointed with our picks - he came 4th this year people! IMO we have done very well with what we had.

Douglas - Seen him on numerous occasions and every time he impressed me more. Has the smarts, athleticism, skills and grunt to go a LONG way. Also in a great leader and character.

Pfeiffer - Beauty of a pick. Tough, hard but has great athleticism. Excellent over head and will go great with NC's gameplan. Can play anywhere - IMO he will be best as an attacking midfielder or flanker.

Vince - I can see smoke everywhere. Bigman said it - obvious Fanta reads these boards (or maybe bigman is Fanta  ). Clean, highly skiled with great height. Could become a midfielder/winger but at this this stage more likely a HFF or even HBF. Is a risk but every club took a risk today.

Obst - Has a few things he can iron out but should become a good player. Is pretty consistent, is quite attacking and is a good mark. Won't play next year but is a local boy so no problems there.

People we have done very well today in a weak draft. Just makes me think how many are left over - Rischbeith, Grima, Grigg, Jackson, Kelleher, etc.

IMO both Pfeiffer and Douglas WILL play games next year. With Vince, Pfeiffer and Douglas our midfielder stocks have certainly improved and Obst gives us that Key Defender that we need.

Good job today Fanta!:thumbsu:

Fantastic drafting by Fantasia but will it still be fantastic in 2 year time if Richard Douglas asked to leave and be traded back to melb as Fergus Watts has just done and a large amount of speculation hinges on John Meesen future.

Welcome to the new boys. Hopefully they all go on to play significant number of games for the AFC on their way to the premiership with the mighty crows :thumbsu:

I have never seen Douglas play but from the reports, he appears to be a very much an inside type player who puts his body on the line and gets the tough footy. At 68kg, I don't think he is big enough to mix it with the big boys. He is at least 10kg away from having a body thats ready for AFL footy. He might have the ability but I think we need to be careful as to how we bring him along.

I have seen a bit of Vince and Pfeiffer and both could get games next year. Vince could give us that HFF goal sneak that can have a run in the midfield or on the wing and and I am sure that, all things being equal, Pfeiffer will get introduced to AFL footy next year.

Don't know a much about Obst but he seems more like a project player to me.

How is this for a bit of trivia for you, both Matthew Smith and Alan Obst were picked up at pick 48 in their respective drafts  :p

So what now, we should run away from victorian recruits like devil from the cross??????

You pick the best available. Who was the last player of note (before Fergus) that left the club after only 2 years??????

Agreed bUT which tall was equal to Douglas ? - Hughs?

In this draft IMO take best available.

Thought AFC would take a midfielder and KPP with first 2 picks but only if a quality tall was available

True.

This draft is a lottery. I am sure we will look at it down the track and see quite a few guns picked up late in the draft and quite a few duds in the top 10. This draft is very unpredictable.

Hopefully, down the track both clubs are very happy with the deal.

My "bones" tell me we have done OK - although I would have liked a big bodied KPP to replace Watts - maybe next year.

BTW - I'm  listening to 5AA online and AW radio and both have Caro on - are there two Caro's:eek: ;)

I also would have liked a replacement for Watts but I don't think there was one. People will say Hughes but he is TOTALLY different player to Watts. There really wasn't a quality key forward of that ilk available with our picks.

5AA broadcast AW on saturday afternoons.

Tommorrow afternoon should be good with the 5AA sportsnet. Might have someone from the AFC and the new draftees on.

And the fact that we can be assured of keeping them cos no other clubs would want to try to lure them over:)

I think we're onto something here Crow-mo. Maybe we could get a job with the team. Come to think of it, I know this player, he is playing for the local ressies, young bloke obviously an SA lad, so theres no chance of home sickness, not much for talent but a great heart. Not wanting a career in the media, and probably not asking for much......could make for a future captain:)

well he's got committment and wants to play for the club...

are you sure he doesn't have any family anywhere, maybe a victorian cousin we need to liquidate? can't take any chances ;)

The golden rule of trading, you don't trade big for a small :(

Ahh playing devils advocate here, what if the small becomes one of the gun midfielders in the comp while the tall you gave up doesn't go on to do much? The talls still need the little men to get the ball to them :)

Didn't work with Peter Vardy.

when on song, Peter Vardy was just about the best small forward in the league. Played tall, burst through the lines; worked to keep the ball in. kciked important goals.

Well - I think that's more a basketball rule, Stiffy. Has some relevance in AFL, but obviously in a sport where there's only five inches or so seperating the players it matters less that a sport where a foot and half can seperate players in height (b'ball, obviously).

No not a cousin, but his sister's brother-in-law once went to Victoria for a weekend away. Hopefully he didnt let him know of all the sights and oppourtunities:cool:

And on that liquidation, lets say I may be able to help, i have a friend of a friend:p !

Follow the leader ... Playing against South Australia in this year’s national under 18 championships, Richard Douglas (right, with ball) shows the style that saw him picked up by the Adelaide Crows in the weekend’s AFL draft.
WHILE all the hype surrounded the top few picks in this year’s national Australian Football League (AFL) draft, the Calder Cannons’ Richard Douglas quietly went about his business.

The 18-year-old was at the top of several clubs’ pecking orders heading into Saturday’s hotly anticipated draft, and was captured by the Adelaide Crows with the number 16 selection overall.

Douglas, voted this year’s TAC Cup coaches’ player of the year, was so high in the Crows’ thinking that the club snared him with its first pick.

“I just can’t wait to come over to Adelaide and start training and meet the boys. It’s really exciting,” Douglas said after the draft.

With his impeccable record for the Cannons this year Douglas was almost assured of a place on an AFL list, but the question as to where he would end up remained.

When his name was read out he knew he would have to leave his family and friends in Broadford, but it was an opportunity he knew he simply must take.

“It will be a bit different to start off with, but it will be a challenge. The family is looking forward to it,” he said. “It will only be the initial couple of months. Once I get through that I think I’ll be fine.”

“We’re a pretty close family, and I’m sure they’ll miss me, but it’s such a good experience.”

Douglas admits to feeling nervous in the weeks leading up to the draft, but was a picture of calm as he waited at home with his family on Saturday, listening for his name on the radio.

“It was a funny sort of feeling, but I was just relieved when my name was read out,” he said.

“I thought from (pick) 10 onwards I was a fair chance to go, and ending up at 16 was pretty good.”

Douglas was among the best players this season for Calder, playing 18 games and being named among the best three on 15 occasions.

His performance earned him a spot in the Vic Metro team for the national under 18 championships in July, after which he was named in the All-Australian side.

Douglas was a popular winner of the Cannons’ best and fairest, and impressed with his agility at the national draft camp in Canberra last month.

Calder regional manager Chris Gleeson echoed Adelaide’s sentiments in declaring Douglas a player of the future.

“Richard just deserves to be drafted. He’s been a fantastic player for us,” he said.

“He’s not a high-profile player, and there wasn’t too many people talking about him around draft time.

“To be in the top 16 is a good indication of just how good a player he is.”

The Crows have also snared former Calder Cannons Brent Reilly (2002) and Ivan Maric (2004) in recent years, continuing the relationship between the two clubs.

“A lot of clubs would have been happy to have Richard, and it was lucky for Adelaide,” Gleeson said. “I think Richard can play a game or two in the seniors next year.

“He’s a very smart and courageous player, and he’s quick enough.

“I think he can develop into a really good midfielder in a couple of years’ time.
