Mick pretty much just said it - he thinks Xavier will be an excellent footballer, but he is not what Collingwood needs right now.

Does that mean he thinks Thomas is not as good as Ellis, but more likely to fill a gap in the Collingwood team?

I can't help but think that the philosophy is short-sighted.

Wait and see, I suppose

I have been very cynical of Collingwood's ability to manage our list for the last few years - no reason to trust them as yet

They never picked the best available Magpies, they sure didnt this year, they picked who they wanted, I dont think they did well in this draft at all, but they may prove me wrong (doubt it tho).

That's a stupid comment. If everyone just said "yeah we're totally fantastic" clubs wouldn't develop. If he doesn't agree, it should say so. Doesn't mean he isn't totally loyal

If the Magpies were rebuilding they would've taken Ellis. Obviously hoping Thomas has a more immediate impact.

Um ....why?

I'd rather not just blindly agree with everything the club does, especially when I think it has made mistakes.

Does that make me more or less a supporter than you who obviously thinks Mick has rewritten the bible.

Hawthorn last year? Did we pick the best available or the best available in the positions we need?

What you really want is the "best available" player that also suites your club's needs. I'd say carlton got lucky in that regard, but many other clubs were caught in a dilemma.

Carltons needs were greater in greater areas , but they picked up , on paper , some great talent. Pies needs were less for KPP and more mids so our selections were more specific.

I suppose being a n00b is as good as gets for you, for at least a year

Why does acknowledging that another player will be excellent mean that we don't rate the one we got as highly.

He's hardly going to say "We reckon Ellis is crap and that Hawthorn are dumb as dog-sh*t for taking him" is he?

We have plenty of young wingmen/flankers, and even if Ellis might turn out better than them, we'd still be left with a team that only has wingmen/flankers.
