Where do most people rate him?
My obvious bias means im grinning from ear to ear but he was always tipped a top 5 pick before injuring his foot..
I don't think it was correct to say he was rated top-5 before injuring his foot.
It is more accurate to say that he was seen as the kind of talent who if he played to his ability could play himself into being a top-5 player.
It is a risk taking a player who basically didn't play in the under-18 championships and missed almost a whole year of footy. A club basically has to make a guess based on his under-16 form and in Varcoe's case his games against Ireland in the hybrid game.

So was Bill Morrison before his shoulder injury ;)
He is the player that could either come up as one of the best in the comp or be a complete bust.
Its a big jump from U16s to U18s. Even more so to the AFL.
He is probably a bit of a risk, but the one that could pay off big. I guess if you are going to take a risk, take it in a draft thats considered as weak.

why do geelong need another midfielder
Last thing Geelong need is more pace:eek: , I think they shud of got Pfeiffer, a half back flank that can replace Sanderson.

why do geelong need another midfielder
Tenace aside, they are all ball winning mids with average pace.
Varcoe is a quick, skilled finisher.
What do you suggest we need exactly?
Geelong lost Thurley though, and Varcoe could be a good goal kicker if Ablett goes to midfield. Going for Mathew Stokes as well though suggests that Stokes gets Thurley's gig.
Also they lost Riccardi and Sanderson so another midfielder makes sense.

What do you think of Geelongs other picks Weaver?
Are they all project players?
If Varvoes foot holds up do you think he will be playing AFL next year?
What do you think of Geelongs other picks Weaver?
Trent West is a bit ho hum and struggled against the top junior ruckmen at times. He will purely be seen as a replacement for Chambers to understudy Blake.
Stephen Owen is similar to Steve Johnson. Not a genuine KF more of a mobile X-factor type who is if anything better at ground level than in the air. Quite tricky though. You'd guess he'd be parked in the reserves for a couple of years because he has a lot to learn. Can't see him getting a regular game as long as Johnson is at the Cattery.
Mathew Stokes is the replacement for Cam Thurley. Will play some games to provide backup to Ablett and Chapman. Again may find getting a senior game tough but at 21 should be fairly right to go.
Ryan Gamble missed the championships with injury and so fell down the order. He is not necessarily 100 miles behind the likes of Pfeiffer. Could do well as a HBF or HFF but again needs to do the gym and running work and probably is one for a couple of years time.
[QUOTE=skywalk750]If Varvoes foot holds up do you think he will be playing AFL next year?
Probably not. A high-quality TAC midfielder runs something like 11km in a game, an AFL midfielder runs something like 16km+. It takes more than one preseason to spike your stamina like that, particulary for a guy like Varcoe who has missed a season. Hard work for the midfielders to jump into the AFL in their first season.
Probably won't be remembered as a great Geelong draft down the track more a case of recruiting some insurance for the team that you already have that adding new weapons.
Also they lost Riccardi and Sanderson so another midfielder makes sense.
Sando wasn't a midfielder.
The loss of Ricco will be a shock to all GFC supporters. It'll be an even bigger shock to Ricco.I hope someone tells him he ain't playing anymore. He keeps turning up at pre-season training.

I was just gonna say that but it looks like you got to it first.

I think this is right with the exception of Varcoe. I don't know much about him, but from the sounds of things he should add a new dimension to the Geelong midfield in the future.
I agree that the others are more top up players than anything else though, but I'm also starting to like the sound of Stokes.

Where's this pace you're talking about?
It's the one thing we did need.

A bit presumptious, he hasn't even done his hammy yet.
It's the one thing we did need.Past tense already? Unlike Hawthorn Geelong came close to doing well this year, pace is something we needed in the finals. That's what he meant.

A forward who could can kick goals and make kingsley become the most dangerous 3rd tall, that would be handy. Cleve Hughes could have been that man. And another key defensive post man would have been handy because when scarlett and tom harley were injured or out of form, so to were geelong.
Gary ablett jnr, tenace, kelly, wocjinski your not exaclty that slow.
Besides that cold old boggy ground of yours is no good for aboriginal players let clubs like essendon have varcoe.

Funny , you call Weaver presumptious in one part of your reply then rectify Geelongs decision without looking at the negative aspects of it

We have drafted a heap of project talls in Spencer, Playfair, Lonergan, McCarthy and Nathan Ablett we didn't need another one. Unfortunately without top 5 picks you don't get the ready made KPP like Reiwoldt and Pavlich which is what we need.
And another key defensive post man would have been handy because when scarlett and tom harley were injured or out of form, so to were geelong.
We have Matt Egan, who when given the chance did well, and Spencer who won the VFL B+F from CHB. Decent enough cover. Any team will suffer with out their first choice KPP. Drafting a 17 yo kid that won't be ready for three or four years wouldn't change that if Harley and Scarlett both went down next season.
We lack speed, X factor and excitement to give the team a spark. We have so many similiar players, look at the difference Riccardi makes coming off the bench as an impact player and he is going on 40.

Davey seems to enjoy it down there.

You would want ot hope his foot is alright.
At richmonds draft meeting on Tuesday night GM said if Kennedy Dowler and Ryder are gone by pick 8 we will take one of Varcoe, Oakley Nicholls or Dempsey, at that stage he said Varcoe was in front and we would take him if the 3 KPP were gone as long as his Medical Reports were good that came back on Thursday. Obviously they were not good enough because Oakley Nicholls was picked, who was there second choice, demsey being third. So their must still be sometihng wrong with his foot
Varcoe and Oakley-Nicholls are very similar players are they not?
I think Tiges chose JON over Varcoe because of the Height factor, senior experiance(?) and Varcoe's foot injury.

Read my above post, richmond rated Varcoe higher, but his foot was not good

Look i like geelong if essendon dont win it i want geelong to every year.
You have stevey Johnson and gary ablett jnr both of them have the x-factor.
your right if harley or scarlett went down next season things would not change, but doesn't mean your going to expect things from varcoe next season either, its still taking time for tenace who i think will be exeptional.
But if u keep recruitng midfielders your going to be like west coast, best team of the year but got found out in the grand final because they didnt have a target who they could go to confidently. Cleve Hughes has talent he was all australian, you dont have to go no.6 to be a top player, just keep picking talls until you find gold, ala carlton with fevola. What number did barry hall go to stkilda?
and davey only plays there once a year its not the whole season.

They recruited who they thought was the best option in the draft with a late first round pick.
What would you have them do? Pick up an average KPP or someone regarded as a diamond in the rough if he could get over his injury.

mate,
that is untrue.
That was not what was said.
They said they rated them all equally, the crowd wanted Varcoe, Miller was noncommital.
For what its worth, I have heard that his foot will be OK.
I think the fact that JON has 10cm more in height, probably has more to do with it than anything else
