I can recall a philosophical discussion I had with another Bigfooty poster after the championships regarding Tim Looby. He though he should have been All Australian where as most good judges didn't think he was even close. Like I said at the time, take away his kicking and there's nothing else to his game and I've heard him described as a fat version of Ryan Lonie with worse accountability. The proof of the pudding is in the eating and I think I'll claim victory now that the results are in

But take away Everitt's height and he wouldn't be that good a player,
take away Judd's pace and he would struggle.
The point is, Looby is a good kick and should have been drafted.

The abilty to kick only pays dividends when you have the ability to get the ball. Looby is a long way from being an AFL player, but will make a very handy suburban or country player. He was sprouted too early with too little to his credit.

What position do you play him in? He can't play as a key defender in the AFL but gets away with it in juniors. He is not a genuine midfielder. He is a Glen Archer - Ty Zantuck type medium defender.

Each club might have one of that type on their list, but that probably means that there are only 2-3 vacancies in the league for his type of player in any one year. With Hurn, Birchall, Stanley, Cook and Riggio going there just wasn't a club shopping for a medium defender.

The best chance for a guy like Looby to get drafted is to get his coach to play him in the centre and show he can get 30 touches. Specialist back-pockets are never going to be prized on draft day.

Ah pieman. Nice to see you have a long memory. We will beg to differ again.

You make it sound as if the kids picked after pick 30 will all be superstars. The fact that 25 or so were picked instead of Looby does not mean they are a better choice than he would have been. Plenty have been picked on a wing and a pray. The fact that one of the best kicks in the TAC and possibly the U18 champs didn't get picked up is disappointing for the game of AFL.

Interesting that although he didn't make AA he did make the TAC TOTY so plenty thought highly of his efforts in 2005. I might add that he did go to DC before plenty of others and he wasn't the only one from DC that was overlooked yesterday. There is still the rookie draft so lets just wait another month and see how he goes shall we.

Now that you've had a free kick at my head lets see your mock draft and we can disect some of your preferred choices. No doubt everyone was spot on after the fact.

Ignore em sezzac. It's a pity that some people choose to be so negative. We all have egg on our face over some call/calls we have made on here over the last few months, but at least people like you are prepared to give an honest view of what you think rather than say little and then come out throwing the stones later. :thumbsu:

I suggested he would go at 28 because I guessed that the Roos would be one of the few clubs looking to recruit a specialist BP type player. I thought they would like Looby's mongrel. Instead they went for Riggio. Once the Roos passed on him he'd missed his chance.

So got the call right on the type of player the Roos wanted, had no way of knowing that Stibbard rated Riggio ahead of Looby.
