View Full Version : Harty, Roo, Macca, Goody, Tyson
No 1 Draft Pick

THE BIG 5. All premiership heros. How long have they got left? Looking at injury patterns, respective style of play throughout their career, current age, motivation aspects (subjectively) and a gut feel, I reckon their final years in the AFL will be:
Hart 2007
Macca 2007
Roo 2008 (with Thompson taking over in 2008 as next Crows Captain)
Edwards 2009
Goodwin 2009
The collective longetivity above would be an a major bonus and allow us a last couple of tilts at glory in the next 2-3 years
Thoughts?

My thoughts are that Benny might not go one after 06 (when he will reach the 300 club) and Macca should go onto 08.
The rest look pretty right though.

Hart - 2006 should be Benny's last IMO. As far Roo, Macca, Edwards and Goody they should retire whenever they want, within reason of course. However, it is imperative that they spend less time in the midfield, starting in 2006.

As an aside. I wonder if the Captaincy issue was raised with Thommo in our pre-2004 trade discussions with him. You think that would have been used as an added little sweetener to get him to West lakes as opposed to Alberton.

With the exception of Hart who I think will go around in 06 and 07 provided the hamstring holds up. The other three should retire about the same time, excluding serious injury. I'd hope we can get 3 more seasons out of all of them. Of course their time in the midfield will be reduced each year. I can see Roo, Goody and Macca all playing a significant roles in the forward line over the next 3 seasons while their onball time is reduced.
So IMO its,
Hart end of 07 @ 33 yrs
Macca end of 08 @ 32 yrs
Goody end of 08 @ 32 yrs
Roo end of 08 @ 33 yrs
seems pretty resonable to me.
Of course a serious injury to any of them in during these years will bring their careers to a somewhat premature end.

pavlich to come home next yr and captain the yr after springy! Thompson's finals showed he might not be up to that, too many brainfades. No way hart will go after next yr either. Think roo has less left than most ppl think, there were some signs last yr he is slowing up.

Everyone has brain fades (even Bickley, Roo, etc) ... it's just a question of whether they learn from their mstakes, so as not to repeat them

ofcourse, but he did it the next week and got benched too. Couldnt believe he lost the plot that much to be honest. Classy players dont usually do that.

Edwards 2009
Goodwin 2009
Hart 1-2 years
McLeod, Roo, Edwards & Goody 2+ years
I expect Edwards may end up outlasting the others.

You're being way to harsh OJ. You need to keep in mind he is only young. It's not like he is having outbursts most weeks!

he is a yr older than judd! But anyway you're right, but it did lower my opinion of him a bit. Wont be right in that really top, top bracket imo. Anyway clearly our best prospect.

Would think Ben would retire at the end of next yr, but the way he played this yr might suggest otherwise.
What kind of contracts are these guys on...:)
Who would we miss most. Roo is an obvious choice but Id think edwards would be a pretty important loss too:)

Ben contracted to end of 2006 (his testimonial year) - hopefully will squeeze another year after that.
Roo contracted to end 2006 - I can see him playing 2007 + 2008 as a permanent fwd maybe changing on the ball a la D Jarman. This should ease the strain on his groins and might even see another year past 2008. would only make him 33 I think.
Macca contracted to end of 2006 - Mind seems to be a week to week proposition - but the body should be good until end of 2008.
Goody contracted to end 2006 - I reckon can play until end 2009.
Edwards contracted to end 2007 - might decide thats enough.
so - possible chronology
Ben and Tyson - end 2007
Macca end 2008
Roo and Goody - end 2009

Tyson has been the most injury free player of all of these guys (touch wood), so why do you think he would retire earlier?

I just get the feeling that he's been struggling towards the tail end of the last 2 seasons. I know he has groin issues and they seem to flair up each season. He gets through a heap of work - and just seems to me to be the kind of player who would go sooner than later. I hope I'm wrong because he would be a dangerous small forward towards the end of his career.

ben, as of last year was still looking to go through 2007, providing the club still wants him and injuries allow.
he wasnt looking to hang up the boots in the near future.

struggling for fitness - if you remember he was a week to week proposition towards the end of the season - even had to wear the bike pants during games.
His form still remained top class of course
Just an opinion - and hopefully I'm wrong - I just reckon his legs are starting to give him some trouble

And at one stage he probably should have. If the unpires realised the contributions he made in rounds 21 and 22 he would have won it !

Perhaps Tyson should be "struggling" more often... ;)
So did I dream the bit where Tyson had sore groins towards the end of the year and despite his great form....had trouble just getting his body through the week...

No MD. I remember him being mentioned as under a fitness cloud leading into at least one of the finals.

No you didn't dream it mate.
His groins were giving him a fair bit of grief towards the end of last year. He wore thick padding in the final against St. Kilda but still managed to be one of our best players for the night.

mcleod was a pinch hitter in the midfield last season ,most of his work was as a defender, the other three spent loads of time outside the midfield every game almost with shirley, thompson, skipworth and rielly getting a fair workload in the middle
there was times and lots of em when we had mcleod in defence roo ,edwards, and goodwin on forward flanks and in pockets at the same time, so i feel we already done your suggestion of them playing less time in the middle .
Whilst Hart, Roo, Macca, Goody & Tyson might be our ageing superstars, they're not the only ones getting on in years.
Nathan Bassett - celebrated his 29th birthday yesterday
Jason Torney - turns 29 in the middle of season 2006
Rhett Biglands - turns 29 next September
Biglands' replacement is already on the list (Meesen, Maric & Griffin), but the other two will also need to be replaced as they're regular members of our starting 22.
Given that these guys don't have the same reputations as the fab-5, and don't have quite the same level of love from the fans, how long do you think they will be hanging around on the list?
Undoubtedly, the big-5 will all be allowed to dictate the terms of their departures (they may be quietly asked to retire, but they will all be retirements not sackings, delistings or trades). What future awaits Bassett, Torney & Biglands?
Some people have suggested that several of our stars will be playing in 2009 - I highly doubt this. If this turns out to be the case, then we will rightly be called "Dad's Army". Port learned the folly of playing too many players aged 30+ the hard way this year.

i think macca will go about the same time as roo and hart, with goodwin and edwards going a little bit after that. Macca can only take so much weight off before the damage in his knee will be too much to handle.

I recall reading a couple of years ago he was basically bone on bone in his knees, no cartialge left at all...that has to catch up with you at some point in time. He looked good out the backline last season though, he has enough to hang with the quicker small forwards still (ie Davey) so is possible he could get a further 2-3 out of himself solely as a small defender...
