Heard Greg Miler on Sport 927 this morning at about 6:40am. Very pleased with the way the draft went for the Tigers although he's obviously not going to say they were unhappy with the picks. Expressed his admiration for Beau Dowler who Hawthorn grabbed leading me to think he would have been a Tiger if he slipped to us at #8.
Spoke briefly about the upcoming PSD and said that the ex Essendon players are no longer training as that is not the way the club is looking now. Bullen and ???
Not set in stone that we will even make a pick but would seem they are leaning towards a genuine rookie if they do make a selection.
Mick McGuane asked about Mark Coghlan and how he is progressing and Miller was very happy with the fact that every player is standing up to the pre-season schedule at this point whereas 12 months ago quite a few were suffering soft tissue injuries. Hopeful Coghlan will be improved fitness wise and capable of impacting games throughout the season, not fade away in the latter half of the year. Mentioned Dean Polo as a player he expects to step up and help out in the midfield structure.
Very happy with Nathan Brown's progress towards his stated aim of playing in Round 1.
Anyone else hear the interview? Have I overlooked anything?

Pretty sure the other Essendon player who was training with us was Ben Haynes. Most of us on this board will be happy that it appears that we will pass over those to guys.
Great news that the ex-Bombers are no longer training with us, when was the last time we did well out of getting a player from Essendon?
Would love to see us pick up one of the overlooked kids from the draft, or a player from a state league that's done well similar to the Tuck experiment.

Definitely got the impression that Haynes or Bullen are no longer being considered because there are rookies available that the Tigers rate as better options.

hmmmm, must have had a bad experience and blocked them out of my mind.
Interestingly enough, they both coincided with an ex-blue clown sitting in the box with the prince of clowns huh? ;)

Robert Walls in an ineffective, off-field role is the only major one IMO.

Ben Harrison, Chris Bond.
Not because they are Tasmanians but I had a lotta time for these two and Flemo too although he was a bit out of his weight division I think really. Had a red hot go though.

Great news on Bullen and Haynes. That would've been a mistake.

Thanks for the link Jezza. Good listen. "highly unlikely" that we'll be using the PSD pick on a recycled player. May not use it at all, or use it on a rookie if one of the squad of them training with us shows a bit.

I think he will use the PSD pick on a player that will go before pick5 in the rookie draft
I wanted Bullen but I am not disappointed that we won't take him. Probably for the best. :)
Taking a kid effectively gives us picks 1 and 6 in the rookie draft (assuming no other teams take a kid in the PSD), given the players that were overlooked in the draft I think that's a good position to be in.

I think you are greatly overestimating the rookie draft.
These players have all been overlooked in the draft proper. There is next to no difference between player 1 and player 60 in the rookie draft, let alone consensus number 1 picks.
Where it would make sense would be if we wanted a player from NSW or QLD and wanted to beat those clubs to using their zone concessions.
If we were interested in a player like James Bennett (NSW) or Nate Roffey (QLD) it would make sense to use the PSD on a kid.
Otherwise it makes more sense to pass in the PSD. Move Gaspar back within the primary list (still a vet), and have 6 rookie list spots. The money saved by not using the PSD pick is worth almost 2 rookie list spots.
Also the rookies get a 1 year deal, whereas a kid in the PSD would get 2.

Hypothetically, if we bring Gaspar back on to the main list in this scenario, does this stop us from placing him on the veterans list again next year?

We can't un-veteran him or Richo without delisting them.
We can happily swap them between the Vets list and Primary list to our heart's content. Swap them backwards and forwards at each list lodgement if we like.

Regardless of veterans lists, I would've thought we're extremely unlikely to bring in more than 4 rookies anyway. PRE's efforts were directed at a 3rd rookie I thought.

Was a good interview. We give him a bit of stick, but he generally knows his stuff in terms of recruiting etc. Liked what he had to say about hawthorn's picks, as you respect his comments. Said he thought Ellis and Dowler were his 2nd and 3rd ranked players.
He would have been stoked that Hughes lasted til 8, I thought he would have been your number 8 pick originally.

they were both good players imo. bond only left so we could get ottens and harro was a victim of the salary cap.

He lasted till 24. We selected JO-Nicholls at 8
