After not being initially impressed that we have not traded for or drafted any key forwards on Saturday, I had a bit of a think about the list and our current talls.

We still have the rookie list to come, which is great as it could assist in gaining some long term options or back up in case of injury this year.

However its the short term that concern me. We havent really covered the losses of the big men we have delisted, so we dont have the number of options we had last year.

I can see that we will be sticking with the Welshy, Pez, Kenny and Trent forward set up this year. Bock would have to stay at CHB.

If Watts had stayed Kenny could go back to defence and unfortunatley Bock would be starting off the bench or in the SANFL.

I started thinking about our remaning talls on the senior list - Griffen, Gibson, Maric, Meesan, Stevens. Out of this lot only the injury prone Stevens and the raw Gibson are the only genuine key forwards. The remaiing three are ruckmen, pinch hitting forwards at best.

I started to think about where some of our young guys would start in Round One of the SANFL season this year, based on recent comings and goings in the SANFL. A big thank you to Macca 19 for his thread on the SANFL board.

So I had a go at putting together some SANFL sides to see where our lads might start the year. Apologies If I havent put some players in their correct spots. I started with Griffen at Centrals:

B Obst, Aufderheide, Currie
HB Knowles, Sibenaler McCabe
C S. Cochrane C Gowans R. Cochrane
HF J. Gowans Cowan Steinberner
F Wilson, Schell Graham
1R Scoullar Thomas, Slade
INT: McKenzie, Officer, Symes, Ware

Unless there are some injuries, I cant see Griff getting a run in the firsts straight up. The Dogs have a very strong side and he will not push out any of the premiership ruckmen or forwards. The Crows recruitment of Obst is a real bonus for us as he can cover the losses of Hay and Hopwood.

Norwood were next:

F Neill Vlatko Campbell
HF Jackman, Gibson, Borlace
C Gallagher Massie, Culpitt
HB Bailey, Bown, Pfieffer
B DeJongh, Vassal, Bassett
1R Nicholas B James, Carslake
INT: Yeomans, Lower, Nitschke, Meesen,

Brisbane recruiting Legs forward Patfull could be just what Gibson needs. It opens up a key spot and Bown can go to CHB. We should be speaking to the new Legs coach and try to get him a key forward spot.

Meesan can work in tandem with Nicholas. I cant see Mees getting much of a go up forward as the Legs have recruited guys like Vlatko for their forward spots. Based on Craig's comments today we may not have to worry about seeing Meesan at the Parade this year.

Now for the Port Magpies

B: Fitzgerald, AhChee, Wait
HB: Carr, M Clayton, DePasquale
C: Surjan, Ebert, Biacsi
HF: Jenner, Stevens, Ilett
F: Meiklejohn, Waterhouse, Gates
R: Maric, J Clayton, Elstone
Int: Slattery, Merrett, Alvey, Lees

Scott Stevens is our other forward option. He's experienced, he's done well this year under Jack's system but he's injury prone. Maric could go forward, but they seem pretty settled with Waterhouse up front.

The SANFL recruiting period is still on so this could all change. I'd expect the SANFL clubs to make their recruits their big priority and the AFL players need to fit in around that.

For example, we have McEntee training with us. If we select him as a rookie, we need to bear in mind his time in the ruck this year would be reduced as the Roosters have picked up O'Hara from WWT. The Roosters also have tall forwards Hargraves, White, Gill and have picked up 2 more talls from Victoria.

It might be tough for him to get some quality game time each week. There have been quite a few players leaving from South and Wests. I wonder if they might approach the Crows to get some of their young blokes (ie Griffen)to fill some of their vacant positions - as North tried last year with Matt Clarke. Uncle Doug could save some $$. This could lead to some light bulbs being installed in the dunnies...we live in hope.

It's a bit of a worry we are down to 2 options on the senior list. Anyone else have any thoughts on how our blokes might go in the SANFL this year and where they should play?

According to Craigy in this morning's paper, Meesen has been training the house down in the 2 sessions we had.

In other news, Craig:

TALKED up second-year ruckman/forward John Meesen's training. "In the two (main) sessions we have had, John has been absolutely outstanding - and I'm talking AFL standard."

Just a quick note, there is only 3 on the interchange for SANFL. And Brad Vassal would be lucky to make the league team, let alone full back. He would be lucky to be six foot.

Excellent to hear.

If he can continue this then I see no reason as to why he can't play a few games next year. :thumbsu:

I still think he will get a game before Maric even though Maric had a better season this year.
