LIONS AND RECRUITING MANAGER PART COMPANY
The AAPT Brisbane Lions and recruiting manager Kinnear Beatson have parted company after 12 years.
Beatson joined the Brisbane Bears in 1994 as Victorian office manager.
“After discussions with the club, it appears we have differences in our recruiting philosophies and list management, and as a result the club has seen fit not to renew my contract, which I accept,” Beatson said. “We both move forward from here.
“I am extremely thankful for my time at the club, where I had the opportunity to work with some wonderful people dating back to the Bears days.
“I am thankful to have been involved with such a wonderful player group, and I have made many lifelong friends through the organisation.
“I’m looking forward to whatever new role in football or sport that presents itself, and wish the new recruits at the Lions all the best for the coming years.”
Beatson leaves with the best wishes of the Brisbane Lions Football Club.
“Kinnear played a strong part in putting together the team that was so successful in recent years, and he can be rightly proud of that,” said Lions football manager Graeme Allan.
“He has been an integral part of our organisation for a long time and is highly regarded by players and staff alike.
“We thank Kinnear for his contribution to the club and wish he and his family all the very best for the future.”
Following Beatson’s departure, the Lions are now re-evaluating the structure of their recruiting operation.
Beatson was a development officer and under 19s assistant coach at Carlton from 1988-91 and was regional manager of the Western Jets in 1992-93 before joining Brisbane.

Maybe it has something to do with either using all 4 picks, or not taking Austin Lucy...?

If you read the article, well it's not exactly like he has a choice in the matter. No contract renewal no job. Club's choice, not his.

I think this might have been in the works for a little while now. For starters there were Leigh's announcement that all positions in the football department were being reviewed. Then if you look at the last couple of seasons end of year books, there have been additions in Beatson's area. It was initially just him, then last year Paul Brodie was added and now this year Graham Wright has been added too. Then there is this Sholley bloke doing the Irish stuff as well. So Beatson's job has gone from a one person to a 4 person role.
It's not the traditional set-up with us of a Senior Coach and Football manager then all the minions. Leigh is also a step above those 2 roles as head of the department Director of Football, he has final control. So with all his re-evaluation of the department, the additions of extras in the recruiting area in the last 2 years, today's announcement of a recruiting re-structure doesn't come that far out of left field.
While Beatson has done a fantastic job in the time he has been with the club, there does come a time when you need a fresh set eyes and ears in the position. Just like any other postion at the club.

Agreed & the man stated the same.
I heard Kinnear interviewed on SEN late yesterday afternoon.
He basically stated that there where philosophical differences between he & some of the match committee. He was ask did this mean that he wanted to nuture more youngsters rather than use 'mature' type players............. but declined to comment on that. The inference was clear though that this was the case.
Two instances become clear to me in the last week.
1- Patfull being taken as a 20 year old, rather than a punt on perhaps the 'obsession' Lucy.
2- Luke Forsyth being delisted quite a strange time for the decision to be made for what appears to be the pick up of Ben Fixter.
Kinnear did strongly talk though that he would enjoy a more hands on approach & this maybe more to the point of the non renewal of his contract.
This meant to me that he no longer wanted to just recruit youngsters. He is of the opinion that clubs only work on youngsters obvious strengths when they are drafted & not nearly enough time is spent on attempting to iron out their weaknesses........... eg. specific training drills to work on weaknesses.
Kinnear stated that recruiters from the draft last weekend could name weaknesses in every player drafted, but clubs don't spend near enough time in turning these weaknesses into strengths. This is where he believes he could also assist a club........... rather than just draft & leave it to the match commitee once the player arrives at the club.
He was extremely confident that the list was in good shape & with injury luck to senior players & the continued development of youngsters that the side would be right in the mix next season.
Kinnear named Beau McDonald as his greatest draft pick, given he had only played some colts games in WA when selected & the lateness of his selection. He was of the opinion that Beau would be in the top few ruckmen in the comp if not for injury, & is progressing well ATM. I think we all gorget at times just how good Beau was............ & hopefully will be again!!!
Finally he stated that there was no ill feeling at all between himself & the club, & that he loved the place.
We all know he will get picked up quickly by another club, & I for one will wish him well.
Rumour has it Denno will throw his hat in the ring.
In fact when I first heard the news I did have a chuckle, thinking I know someone that won't be too disappointed ;)

We wont know the impact this will have until a few years down the track. Kinnear has been an integral part of the clubs success. Personally I think its a major blow.

I was thinking about this last night and I posted this on the drafts board this morning. It's not exactly what I wanted to say, I can't find the exact words but you might get my gist:
Personally I think it has more to do with TPP and administrative issues having to have a more prominant part in who we recruit, how and where from.
The long and the short of it is that the Lions have (and in my books it was worth it) sacrificed alot to play in 4 consecutive GF's and win 3 premierships. This created 2 really noticible things:
1. List retention - all older players - less than normal new blood coming thru the ranks.
2. TPP major constraints with back ended contracts galore to keep the team together during that period.
Then straight after the success you can add to the aging list the widning back of the salary cap concessions. This has created big list problems for the Lions. And it has left us devoid of any room for 'well he was a mistake' when recruiting players compared to other clubs. And being unable to address the 'don't wanna leave home' factor ala Marc Murphy was a HUGE blow as well.
So what has to happen? The focus has to be on local talent, developing it to AFL acceptable level and recruiting it via the local rookie concessions or when lucky the national draft. While this is going on a recycled player or 2 from the PSD is going to be needed to keep the team plodding along to remain fairly competative.
The introduction of the AFL Academy in 2005 seems to be the starting point, along with today's musings in The AGE that the new recruiting manager will be based out of Brisbane instead of Melbourne.
I don't think it's that Kinnear Beatson actually did anything totally wrong, just that because of adminstrative constraints a new direction has to be taken in how the club approaches its recruiting endevours.
could this sacking have anything to do with Murphy's decision not to go to Brisbane?

Well I think 'sort of'. Did we put too much effort into trying to get Murphy and neglect others? Probably not. But did the Murphy decision just glaringly highlight the 'stay home/go home' factor is still a HUGE problem and we need to find other ways of addressing it, so need to change our recruitment methods? Yeah I think that might have been part of this whole restructure thing.
could this sacking have anything to do with Murphy's decision not to go to Brisbane?
Nah, not at all. Brisbane have been well aware of Murphy for at least 3 years.
It wouldn't have taken any Beatson brilliance to stand up at a meeting and go "Umm,.. Boys, I'm advising we have a bit of a lazy crack at getting the number 1 pick with our third pick.... wada yoos reckon?".
From that point Murphy met variously with everyone from Matthews to Brown to Voss, and Beatson would have had almost nothing to do with it -- not his job.

I for one wish Beatson all the best.
He's done some great work for the club, and should be proud of his success.

here here... coz just think really without him, we really wouldnt of had the success we have had, and the players we are lucky to have!

In all seriousness, I wish him well in his future endeavours, but no, I for one am not sorry to see him go.

I always envied Brisbane's recruiting and thought Beatson did a great job , but , when you go back and look at Brisbane's drafts there haven't been too many good ones in since the merger , 2000 and 1997 are the exceptions .
I think the 2002 Draft was pretty decent
pick 3 Jarred Brennan – 21 games played
19 Troy Selwood - 17
30 Daniel Merrett – 15
44 Anthony Corrie – 27
Sherman at 45 in the 2004 was a nice find too IMO
