This may have been covered before but I was wondering who of these two players would be the No1 pick in the same draft? Allowing for the fact that we now know that Lids is an absolute gun!
According to earlier reports, Delidio still holds the honours for being the complete package.

From the little I know about Murphy, Deledio is/was taller, better overhead. quicker and more developed physically. He was probably more consistent in TAC from all reports too.

Murphy hasnt even played a game of senior afl. How many people in here have seen him kick a football? ;)

Murphy seems to have got more of the pill at junior level.

Brett will walk all over Murphy....................if Murphy gets a game.
The spin doctors have done the job for Murphy for this draft. He must be the weakest No 1 draft pick ever. Injuries to other mid fielders for this years Carnival left him in the spotlight, but how Richie Douglas didn't get the accolades for his great carnival and the rest of the season I don't know.
Dougo won the coaches because he was the player that dominated the games that the Cannons won.
Dougo won the B&F at the Cannons with the highest votes yet polled at that sensational club.
Dougo killed them in the carnival yet no-one wrote him up about it.
Murphy hardly got a few kicks and did well but yet he was written up as the star. ??????????????????
Murphy is a great kid, but no where near the standard that everyone 'in the know' talks about.
He is the son of a 'gun' so he went high on the list. When will the recruiters learn that because dad was a footballer.....it has nothing to do with his son's talent or drive............just ask Murph's mum...its not all because of John.
If Dougo's dad had played footy he would have been number one.
No one mentions the mother......who may well be the daughter of a footy great...or the sister of a footy great.............they only mention the spotlight seeking former footballer dad.
Time will tell and good luck to him but...........
Delidio is the real deal mate, he just beats the opposition to the ball and then he kicks it to his team mates..........every time.
Murphy is a furphy and Carlton have been sucked in.

Bollocks.
I've seen plenty of Oakleigh. Murphy is a brillant footballer. The best to have played their since Luke Power.

He's way too classy for that rabble.
He would be great at Tigerland.

Fair shot Czar.
But do the stats tell the whole story?
What about tackles and one percenters?
Did Murph or Dougo play a team game or were they out to get drafted?

I've got no idea boss. I don't know why your talking about Richard Douglas in a "Murphy V Deledio" thread. The little I know about Douglas is that he is sposed to be a class act. What I've seen of Murphey and the hype, its a good guess he will be class, the clear no.1 pick in a even draft with too many standouts. I'd love either of those to boys at Tigerland, it was not to be.
Deledio I wouldnt swap for the world. Best thing to happen for Richmond in my lifetime.

No Jacko, I'm 50 in a month or so and have watched Dougo go all the way through the TAC system.
He was the hardest working guy in the whole group that I saw.
Murph was easily beaten in the games I saw him play against the Cannons and in my opinion was not impressive during the carnival.
The media hype got him drafted, not just at no 1, but drafted.

My thread was that a guy like Dougo is way better than Murphy.
And Brett is better again.
Royce Hart was the best player I have seen at Tigerland.
My dad says Jack Dyer was the best he has ever seen, and he has been a member for nearly 60 years.

im not usually one to bag older people but please get your eyes checked and then go over those games again, i very much doubt the media can overrate a player that much, look at swallow he got overrated by the media but recruiters know what he is capable of, and trust me even carlton arent that stupid, i think what you are saying is rediculous becuase murphy is talent

Sorry but I simply can not respect this opinion at all.
In the first game against WA at the carnival Murphy played one of the best halves of football you will ever see. He almost single handidly blew WA out of the water with a 20+ possession half which was awesome. After that they put a heavy tag on him and came back into the game rapidly.
Murphy's carnival was the equal of Ryan Griffin's the year before and he will be a similar talent.
Douglas is a good player and I had him rated highly. Often suggested that I'd be tempted to take him at 8, and that he will probably be the best player in the draft.
Murphy though is a great talent too.
Wouldn't have gone top-5 last year and is not in Deledio's league, but an obvious choice at 1 this year.
The media hype is completely natural. All the draftees are complete unknowns to 99% of the football public and so the media need an angle. Being John's son makes for an interesting story for those that otherwise couldn't care less.
The refusal to go f/s to Brisbane is a genuine story worth writing about, as is the bidding war by the Melbourne clubs to talk him out of going North.
Brett Deledio
TAC Stats:
2003: 7 games, 7 goals, 18.3 PPG
2004: 11 games, 21 goals, 23.9 PPG
Deledio has more strings to his bow and played some games at FF. Hence the higher number of goals kicked and the lower stats totals.
Murphy's stats are a little inflated by a 3-4 game stint in the back-pocket where he got 30 touches in a team being spanked like a stubborn mule.
Make no mistake. We got very very lucky with Deledio. Best player in the draft since Judd.
Lids is only 3 months older as well so Murphy has the advantage of being a bit older and experienced coming into his first afl season.
