Reliable Richmond defender Chris Newman has been rewarded for his consistent form over the past few years with a lower guernsey number for the 2006 season.

In fact, the 23-year-old, who has played all of his 76 senior league games with the Tigers in the No. 35 jumper, will wear the lowest number of them all – No. 1.

Newman was pleased to take over the No. 1 guernsey vacated by Rory Hilton, when it was offered to him by the Club. It’s the number he predominantly wore during his junior football days at Beaconsfield.

Meanwhile, Richmond’s first choice in last Saturday’s National Draft, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, has been given the honor of wearing the No. 29 guernsey, made famous throughout 403 games by Club ‘Immortal’ and five-time premiership player Kevin Bartlett.

In further number news from Punt Road, ex-Bulldog Patrick Bowden will wear the No. 16 guernsey in his first season at Tigerland . . .

It’s the number worn by his coach Terry Wallace throughout his illustrious league career at three clubs – Hawthorn, Richmond and the Bulldogs.

Bowden wore No. 20 during his five-year career at the Whitten Oval.

Richmond’s second selection in the ’05 National Draft, Cleve Hughes, has been given the No. 34 jumper, with the Club’s third choice, Travis Casserley, to wear No. 37.

The No. 9 guernsey, worn with such distinction by Wayne Campbell for the vast majority of his illustrious league playing career, until his retirement at the end of last season, will remain in mothballs throughout 2006 . . .

Nice. That means Hilton is definately not being picked in the PSD!

I wonder if this promotion in number also results in a promotion to the midfield for him? His pace and skill could add to our options very nicely.

Could somebody please explain to me how having a lower number is a promotion?

When lovely little s--ts decide they want to work their way through a football team, they usually start at the top of the list as it appears in the footy record.

Instead of having to follow most of the team, getting left with beaten slops, Chris now gets to go first and handball off to the followers. A massive compliment for a player.

Well it looks like number 29 means nothing to the guys in control now.

Two succesive times its been given to a draftee. Interesting given that it is the most famously worn number at Richmond in the last 40 years.

I guess the bitterness toward KB's stance cuts just as deep at Punt Road tthan it does here.

I'm spewin a bit about this.

I loved watchin Newman strut his stuff in the no. 35

Doesn't really matter though. Whichever way you look at it, this kid is going to join the 'elite' club next year. :thumbsu:

Been given to our top draft pick each time though Peejay. I think that still shows a bit of respect for the original wearer and some optimism for the new kid, even though the optimism was ultimately misplaced last time around.

Question? who was our last good player that pulled on the number 1 jumper. ? That was good in alot of areas of his game?

Im a fan of Newman. Had a good year last year and really seemed to come of age agaisnt Ireland.

However - he isnt a back pocket. Got killed a few times when asked to do the job on an elite specislist forward pocket.

Hope to see him tag in the midfeild next year.

I think him tagging in the midfield would be good. On players such as Milne he got beaten but in the midfield as he showed against Ireland I think he would be an excellent tagger.

What can they do ?

Make a big thing of it and we will all be reminded of how much of a prick he is cos he wont come down to present it.

No win.

Bit harsh. I think he actually did pretty well. Brad Johnson on song ain't no easy assignment.

I just think of the BP as a place for a kid to do a 100 game apprenticeship and then get a 'promotion' to the midfield. It is Newman's time to take on more responsability. Nathan Burke, Tony Free, Adam Simpson ... do your learning and then get a real job.

A good BP is handy but not nearly as valuable as a good midfielder. I think we left Chaffey in the comfort zone too long.

Johno, Milne, Matera off the top of my head. Maybe a couple more.

Newman + tagger - Chaffey = :)

Matera is gone :)

Newman should be tagger Kane Cornes was for Port. The player who racked up the possys himself and kept his opponent to barely anything. :thumbsu:
