Buchanan to debut in ING
30/11/2005

By Ken Piesse

Liam Buchanan has been rewarded for his career-best season start with promotion into the Victorian squad for Saturday's ING Cup fixture against the Redbacks in Melbourne.

The free-scoring right-hander has been one of the stars of Premier League cricket again this season with almost 500 runs including 212 (out of 280 while he was at the crease) against Melbourne University last round.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity," Buchanan said. "I've waited a long time for a chance. I know my game really well now and I'm playing straighter and still scoring quickly."

Buchanan saya a troublecome knee was feeling "pretty good" and he hoped his selection could be a stepping stone to more regular representative opportunity.

His only previous appearance for Victoria was a 20-20 appearance at the WACA Ground in January.

It caps a big year for the Buchanan family. Brother Amon kicked the matchwinning goal in this year's AFL Grand Final.

The Vics have been forced to make three changes to their ING Cup side with captain Cameron White, fast bowler Mick Lewis and leading batsman Brad Hodge all in NZ with the Australian one-day team.

Also into the side are rookie, Richmond's Aiden Blizzard and Geelong’s Grant Lindsay. All three will be playing their first games.

The side is:

Jon Moss
Michael Klinger
David Hussey
Liam Buchanan
Aiden Blizzard
Graeme Rummans
Grant Lindsay
Adam Crosthwaite
Shane Harwood
Peter Siddle
Gerard Denton
Tim Welsford

The super sub will be named on the morning of the match.

David Hussey will lead the Vics in the absence of White.

Shane Warne is unavailable for bpth the weekend's one-dayer and next week's Pura Cup match against NSW starting next Tuesday. He has been advised by Australian team doctors and physiotherapists to rest from both games.

He is hoping, however, to be available for selection in the ING Cup match against the Queensland Bulls on Sunday, 11 December.

Who are you talking about ?

Liam deserves his chance to play for his state at one-day domestic cricket level.

You have to be jealous of those who witnessed his career (http://cricket-online.com/player.php?player_id=15004&PHPSESSID=91b5bb6983fff547710f9db5dd6fb623).

Particularly those who saw his blistering 41 from fk knows how many balls. Good to see that not only Australia's team coach got a big 41, but the selector managed a massive 3 in the same innings. Obviously were facing a top quality bowling attack (which let them get 7/455 dec) :P

More guys in the squad like him putting pressure on the others can only be good for Vics . Hopefully he does well . In 2-3 years guys can really inprove there game , Darren Mcnees was playing for Fitzroy-Doncaster ( between the 1's and 2's ) 3 years ago and now he is playing state cricket with Tassie .

McNees also opened the bowling for the VCCL against Sri Lanka at Hastings in that charity game a few years ago.

Yeah he went back to the country after Fitzroy won the premiership around 3 years back . I'm pretty sure he was originally from up that way .

Yeah, he played for a club near Swan Hill and was selected for the VCCL squad from the Swan Hill & District CA.

I am so also happy to see Blizzard being given an opportunity, although his form is a bit up and down for him to be playing in the Pura Cup.

Great to see Grant Lindsay get a call up. He's an underrated player who has done the job for Geelong for the last few seasons.

Yes, it is.

Have heard others rate him as well, he's played a 2nd XI game or two in recent seasons for Victoria.

Mash's isn't suited to one-day cricket and Joseland is playing state 2nd XI for Victoria.

His Premier Cricket form with Melbourne Uni has been as consistant this season as it has been in the past.
