Now he claims the Libs want to raise the rate of the GST to 15%. Where does he come up with this, has he got some proof. The only way it will rise Kim is if you get into power, and the Libs lose SA. Then it is all Labor govts in power. That would enable you to increase it wouldn't it Kim. You see Kim, Howard wouldn't be able to even if he wanted to, because the Labor state govts would block it. So stop talking out your a$$ Kim.

Unless, of course, Howard (or whoever is in charge) does a deal with the democrats in the senate to change the legislation enabling a bypass of the states veto.
If Howard has said that he will NEVER EVER increase the GST . THat this is a CORE promise and that it is ROCK SOLID.
We are F****D:rolleyes:
PS idiot, any Government can change the TAx just by changing Federal legislation (state approval not required).

He was the same man who said we'll "never ever" have a GST.

It was also the man who went to the country on an election pledge to introduce the GST and won.
2 months ago I would have said that we could never, ever have an atrocity like Sept 11th. Now I have to admit I was wrong. Howard could not see there ever being a GST introduced and said it but the effects of the old tax system on economic viability changed his mind. Is changing your mind and then going to the country asking them to vote for that issue a bad thing. Or is it like Labour in WA who went to an election promising no increases n taxes and no new taxes only to introduce a new one and increase others. Sureley one party did it with a mandate!
The suggestion that the democrats could vote with Liberal to change the GST is ludicrous. Democrats are Labour stooges and would be decimated by such a move as a party, they could never do it. And Liberals would lose any successive election on such a move. So it wont happen BY THEM.
Even though Labour in power could do it with State blessings they too would not do it because of the effect on the next election.
Labour will probably get elected, face a global recession and substantial financial commitments along with unknown but high aboriginal costs associated with 'sorry' day. They will finance this with borrowings and increases in company and top end personal income tax increases. They will instigate substantial public works projects to try and constrain unemployment but the depth of the global recession will determine if this is enough.
Companies will go bankrupt at an alarming rate next year but 2003 will probably see a turnaround. Investment in Australia will drop sharply and interest rates will be at least 3% higher over the next year.
In reality the scenario exists for a huge global recession that no Australian government could cope with. In that case unemployment, interest rates and taxes will all go up. If Labour win, as seems likeley, that would create a huge backlash at the next election with a rout, giving Liberals control in both houses.
So in one way a Labour win could be good for the Liberals in the long term.

The Democrats DID vote with the Liberals to introduce a bastardised version of the GST, not the one the minority of people voted for, the Demacrats COULD vote with the Liberals in the future to change legislation to increase the rate of the GST, if Costello rolls over (as he did on the GST) and gives them extra funding in areas of there interest .... who could ever forget that picture of Meg Lees and John Howard cuddling up with each other after delivering us the GST ... and Johnny lavishing praise on the Democrats ...... Quite sickening really
