16 Jordan Barham - Hawthorn
:D Shocker.
Looking at all those quality names 'twas a great year to take as many juniors as possible.Must be the most successful draft ever in terms of numbers picked compared to success at AFL level.
Can only hope the class of 2004 will be nearly as good, for Richmonds sake.

I'm glad it was Wells and not Bigfooty making Geelong's picks.

Terrific player who has developed more than anyone expected and not bad for a rookie.

That's what I was thinking.
But we would have got Dal Santo instead of Shane Harvey, so it may have been worth it.

Whoever picked Moloney at 68 (as a bottom ager) is a genius. He was overlooked in both 2001 and 2002.
Gee I am much happier with west coast's actual selections:D

At least we would've got Mark Seaby instead of Mark McGough.
Pick #27 was used on Tom Davidson who, while talented, hasn't been able to stay fit and healthy, but I guess better than Rod Crowe
Pick #58 was used on Dane Swan, which was a very good get at that stage in the draft.
Pick #72 was used on Tristen Walker, who again, was a pretty good pick considering that he played footy at all.
That was indeed the tale of Collingwood's drafting from 2001-03 - Waste the early picks and then do better with the late ones.
Brisbane ended up with:
#19 Gram
#35 Wright
#45 Clarke
#51 Pass
#65 Pass
Not much better than BF's phantom.
OK VFL player
Who?
Luke Guerra, younger brother of Brent. Was originally expexted to be better then Brent. I played cricket against Luke the other week.

62 Ben Rutten, Port Adelaide interesting
I thought we ********ed up picking Cole at 11, seems as though people on Bigfooty rated him the same as us...
:( We took Hunt.
Yeah, but only because Geelong ruined the cunning plan by drafting Kelly at no 17!
No Matt McGuire anywhere there - looks like John Beveridge was the smartest man of all, picking Ball, Dal Santo and McGuire.
11 Richard Cole - Collingwood
27 Rod Crowe - Collingwood
43 Mark Seaby - Collingwood
58 Henry Playfair, Collingwood
71 Clancy Rudeforth, Collingwood
I did ours. I have no idea who Clancy Rudeforth is!
Ordinary at best. I still did better than Judkins though! :D

Rudeforth was on the Eagles rookie list in 2004
I remmember him doing something really courageous in a Wiz cup game Vs Melbourne. His moment in the sun you could say
The thing that strikes me most about this phantom draft is the KPP's
None have really hit there straps yet in the AFL which shows that a lot of patience is required by Clubs when drafting these type of players.
19 Quinten Lynch - Brisbane
35 Ben Finnin - Brisbane
51 Steven Eichner - Brisbane
64 Andrew Browne, Brisbane
77 Michael Basile, Brisbane

Oh dear.
That's OK.
Kinnear Beatson did not do any better with
Gram - traded to the Saints
Wright - gooone
Clarke - gooone

BF phantom Draft:
10. Steve Johnson [Would have been a good pick up]
42. Aaron Rogers [would have been delisted by now]
57. Tristen Walker [may have been handy, hasn't exactly set the world on fire at the Pies]
71. Scott McGlone [who?]
83. Robbie Ferraro [who?]
89. Andrew Carey [who?]
Scotty Clayton's Picks:
10. Sam Power [51 games to date, rated at pick 6 on the BF Draft]
42. Kieren McGuiness [23 games, could be on his last chance this next season]
57. Brent Colbert [delisted, now at the Bullants - VFL]
71. Brian Harris [Super pick up at 71]
83. Aaron James [lol]

23. Cameron Croad Steve Johnson
24. Matthew McCarthy Charlie Gardiner
40. Gary Ablett Gary Ablett
41. Paul Johnson Henry Playfair
68. Brent Moloney Matthew McCarthy
80. Joel Reynolds David Johnson
So the only one BF selected that has turned out to be a better player than Wells selection is Brent Moloney, who he drafted in the PSD the following year.

Id prefer Sam Power. Sampi for pick 6 cracks me up every time, LOL...
If only this really happened :oDon't worry, we picked a dude who only played 8 games before getting dumped (oh, sorry, 'traded for pick 61'). Interesting that BF still had us picking Powell, but at pick 73, which it transpires is more like what he was worth.
Absolutely nailed it with Adam Schneider at pick 60. Getting the exact pick that far down the list ain't easy. Well done Weaver (or whomever did the pickin')!
Sydney's experience certainly bears out the theory that big men take time, care and love. Right up until mid-2005, you could make out a good case that LRT (BF pick 28, actual pick 29) was a screaming dud. This case was often made out by Sydney fans, during matches, in spectactular language. Then he turned it all around spectactularly, shows every sign of being a 150 gamer (injuries permitting) and was one of the better players on the park in the GF, to boot.
Bet St Kilda are kicking themselves they didn't pick Barry Brooks directly (rather than wait 3 years) and let Nick dal Santo slide to Essendon.
Not.

i'm happy we got Samps with that pick, especially as he could very easily have gone to the dockers with pick 4 if the hawks had've taken Judd with their first pick, which lucky for us they didn't :thumbsu:

Not entirely true. He received a RS nomination in his debut senior season and played some useful cameos during that year (including at least one, possibly two, goals in the QF against the Power). Last year he suffered a series of niggling injuries but whenever he was able to get onto the paddock for a reserves game he was an absolute standout (in my eyes, anyway).
It was only the first half of this season when he looked seriously out of place at AFL level. His improvement over the second half of the season came in considerable strides leading up to the GF. He didn't just pull that GF out of nowhere. Indeed, I reckon he probably played his "best ever senior game yet" at least five times in the second half of the year.
18 Nick Dal Santo - Essendon
Oh damm if only :(

He would have gone pick 3 had Judd gone pick 1 leaving Freo most probably with Sampi at 4 (there was that strong Brooks rumour around the time as well but i'll guess we'll never know who Freo would've picked as Judd didn't go pick 1!)
North Melbourne
Phantom Pick Actual Pick
7. Xavier Clarke David Hale
14. Steven Armstrong Ashley Watson
30. Joshua Dicketts Rod Crowe
54. Aiden Parker Ben Robbins
61. Fabian Francis Mick Martyn
80. Ben Kane Hugh Foott
- - -
Both pretty weak. Rod Crowe and Ashley Watson weren't up to AFL level. Mick Martyn and Ben Robbins were recruited for depth late in their careers, I think Robbins had a couple good tagging roles.
David Hale is the only player worth speaking of in the bunch. Has become our number one ruckman, IMO a good selection and 2006 will really show whether he can build up and become one of the AFL's premium ruckmen.

Saints would of liked Hodge and Ball but of course Hodge taken 1 so not our fault. Xavier is a starter in our team and adds flair. Dal Santo for Brookes geez i'm glad we didn't get Brookes... oh wait :(. Maguire not even listed and the best CHB this year should of been AA but let's not get into that instead of McGough geez i'm glad we didn't get McGough.... oh wait :( (at least we got him for nothing). Monty who will be a regular is a better pick up than Browne. And Welsh insead of Houlihan was the only mistake IMO. Beveridge had a great day that year.

I'd say John Beveridge wins by a nose. Ball and Hodge together would be incredibly awesome, but the rest of Beveridge's picks outweighs the benefit of having Hodge in the side. Only one dud from six picks is a fantastic result.
Surprised to see Goose Maguire sneak under Weaver's radar. He was justifying his high selection before his injury run, have to wait til next year to see if he can make his way back.
Interesting side note: we wound up with Brooks and McGough unfortunately. The Brooks trade is still one of the worst in the AFL.

The whisper that I heard was that Beveridge was sure that the Eagles and Dockers would take Polak or Sampi at #3 & #4 leaving Judd for the Saints at #5. Apparently as WC called out Judd's name they WC table looked directly over at the Saints table with a very large smile.
If only... a few flags may have been forthcoming with a midfield of Ball, Hayes, Dal, Harvey, Montagna &.... Judd.
Talk about a bump there.
Anyway, this made me laugh.

1 Chris Judd Luke Hodge
16 Jordan Barham Rick Ladson
20 Daniel Elstone Daniel Elstone
32 Shane Harvey Campbell Brown
36 John Baird Sam Mitchell
48 Sam Mitchell Simon Cox
bold players were those taken by Hawthorn in the 2001 draft. Fair to say that our recruiters (Turnbull, from memory) did a better job in reality than the BF recruiters, though there was a lot of talk (I seem to recall) at the time that Baird would go to Hawthorn. Three of the four players recruited in 2001 have played 100+ games and I'm fairly sure that Ladson is very close to that milestone. Cox was a good player in a short space of time. Elstone delisted without playing a game.
