View Full Version : Ovens and Murray
Daniel McLaughlin had his most consistent year for the rovers finishing in the top 5 in their b&f last year, he also won the b&f in 2004. Very courageous, strong overhead and can play in a number of positions. I have heard he is moving to Bendigo with work?

Anyone aware of any players that are looking a bit shakey in the O&M that will be looking to go bush before the footy season kicks into gear? Most players on the cusp will usually make the move after a couple of games but is there any players that are looking a bit old or in a good paddock over xmas that will possibly struggle at the level?

Anyone on this thread know of a man by the name of Ross Hedley? Had a great year at the age of 45 for North Footscray in the 2nd Div. of the Western Regional Football League (Melb) this year. Obviously slowed down, but a real footy head who is brave and just finds the footy.

Chuck used to be playing coach of Wodong Saints in The tallangatta league.
Collected 42 posessions against Rutherglen on his 42nd birthday.
Super fit and a terrific bloke to boot.

A little bit of footy News from the Border Mail.
Norman’s signing adds to Hawks’ positive vibe
25 January 2008
PETER Cristoforo is looking forward to sharing the Wangaratta Rovers’ forward-fifty with boom recruit Karl Norman.
Cristoforo has been the Hawks leading goal-kicker for the past two seasons since joining them from Northern Football League Club Epping.
Hawks’ coach John McNamara readily admits that they have struggled at centre-half forward in his time at the helm.
But with Norman, now with a three-year stint at Carlton under his belt, Cristoforo, Jesse Silver, Ross Hill and another recruit former Murray Bushranger Jake Platfuss, the Hawks have claims to having one of the best forward lines in the competition.
“Our forward line was good last year, one weakness we had was that centre-half forward area,” said Cristoforo, who has booted 124 goals in his time at the Hawks.
“He will fill that role good, he is a bigger guy and he’ll help Rosco, Jess and myself and stuff like that.”
Cristoforo said there was a positive “vibe” around W.J. Findlay Oval after the Hawks produced one of the stories of the O and M season.
The Hawks dropped their first six games of last season and were seemingly down and out.
But they stuck to their guns and grabbed fifth position after stringing together an impressive second-half of the year.
Cristoforo knows the next challenge for the Hawks is, firstly, making it to the post-season and then winning finals games.
“Definitely for starters we want to make the top-five, we haven’t lost anyone,” he said.
“We have picked up a couple of bigger guys, so obviously we are aiming for the finals and if we start better ... if we have one or two of them early games we might have had a double chance.”
The Hawks had some exciting talent emerge last season including a breakout season from talented midfielder Kyle Raven.
“That’s probably something I have thought about the Rovers, I am probably one of the older blokes and I am late 20s, they have got a good junior system where the young blokes push through and come up,” Cristoforo said.
The Hawks have got a number of players including Cristoforo and Jamie Allan that travel from Melbourne each week.
“When I first started I probably thought it would be good to do for one or two years, but it is a super club, if it was closer to home I would probably stay here for the rest of my career,” Cristoforo said.

In 2008, a new movie is to come out simply titled "The Return of Ryan"
Starring Jake Ryan, the movie will show off his sublime skills as he methodically and rampantly dismantles each team on his way to the 2008 league B&F.
Modelled on the new Rambo movie, Ryan will seek to destroy and carve anything that gets in his way.

Signed with a club in cairns
mcmillan has signed with the south cairns cutters as assistant coach. Massive loss for yarra. I caught a couple of games up there in 2006, he is going to rip that league apart if he is half serious. Losses mounting for yarra, s rudd and phil bourke other confirmed departures, lonergan likely to be on the move and a couple of others weighing up options. They have recruited well too though, jeremy o'brien and dan thomson from gvfl heading there, plus i think they have also signed a key defender from a suburban melb league.

Yep! Coached Rennie after Matt Ansell left. Was playing coach and his form was terrible so played the season out in the 2`s(1996?) He then went to Gorambat and coached the seniors(and played seniors, so at least there seems to be a league worse than the Coreen league) to a flogging to Bonnie Doon in the g/f. I think if he`s not from yarra then he`s from Mulwala.

Juddy, why does everyone think all the O+M clubs pay out a fortune for players. From what I was told Adam was on $275 a game. Remember he was a NA boy through and through until this year, just like his old man and thats all he wanted to do, play for North. Yes he left and will now be paid better than most but some how I dont think the $ was the main reason! Maybe he didnt see eye to eye with a certain someone?

I'm a former player from Albury, now in Canberra and can confirm that our club up here spoke to Prior earlier this year and at that stage he was only asking for around $400 a game. I had heard that he was only on about $275 at North as well....

Depth is whats required to win games of football in such a strong competition and losing 21 players is a catastrophe. Poor Raiders, thier trying to do all the right things but its just not happening. Will be another long year with Prior finishing it at CHB.

McMartin had injuries last year and was never fit. Having said that, by his own admission may not have been fit for quite a number of years. If he puts in the work and gets fit, Dederang have themselves a very good player.

Ive got no doubt he probly would have won the morris last season, no disrespect to johnny mac. So Winmar with that said you should get back in ya box. So before you jump on ya soapbox winny, Ryan was not being arrogant by trying to run through someone, thats just the way he plays, and that style is what makes him such a good player and probly, injuries aside, will see him eventually win a morris medal.

So before you jump on ya soapbox winny, Ryan was not being arrogant by trying to run through someone, thats just the way he plays, and that style is what makes him such a good player and probly, injuries aside, will see him eventually win a morris medal.
Its good to see you get so passionate about your footy behind the fence and thats probably where you been all your life! You filthy bush pig!
Secondly sounds like you def are jealous you got very defensive about your comments and quick to defend ryan previously you did say something about his not even that good and he broke.. can't have it both ways mate make up your mind! By the way how was the view behind the fence and your obviously a lavington supporter/ magoo / ferrel

Who are these blokes that were jumping outta his way? winmar you make him sound like a product from the selleys range at the local hardware, c'mon tell us how hard he is again!
well i will tell you how hard he is he single handly won the game against corowa when they already had a few injuries and lost their other star on baller raines to an ankle injury in the first half.. he physically mentally intimidated members of the wodonga bulldogs including walker who was petrified of him for the rest of the game..
all i know is that ryan should be a walk up start to the o and m rep side along with his mate raines and schmidt! (providing of course they are injury free)

I doubt anyone jumps out of anyones way in the O&M. Some very tough lads running around........
Whisper is a scout from out West giving due consideration to Ryan if his form holds up in 2008........only issue they see is size (height).
You've gotta be kidding. He's had his chance being aligned to an AFL club ( Geelong ) & his off field reputation will be enough to ensure he is not given another.
Ryan, tough ????
Things must have changed a lot in last couple of years.

I think we should include him in the o&m squad even if he's not fit... cos he's so bloody hard! Plus he can mentally intimidate the opposition.:D

yarra shaping up ok. Lost mcmillan though who will be very hard to replace. Have picked up at least 2 quality onballers and a defender from a melb suburban league. They should be thereabouts, but dunno if they're going to be much improved on 2007 based on the comings and goings.
Mcmillan, Rudd, Bourke, Lonergan and Gallagher all key position players i'd say very hard to replace. One key position player they have picked up supposedly played at Mulwala and struggled from all reports.Hammond and Jackson(knee) will also be missed.

As a new bloke in the north-east region I have of recent time seen many O&M games and have to say firstly that in comparison to many metropolitan leagues in Melbourne and I guess anywhere else for that matter it is of a high quality standard. Sure you will have the knuckle-heads that will carry on and give some teams a bad rap although overall I've been impressed.
Sure there is a bit (or should I say a lot) of money that is changing hands for a game of footy but I guess if it attracts the best players willing to move to the region then good luck to the clubs for providing such talent for us the outer experts....
Now to add to the debate of McCormick v Ryan v anyone else people out there want to throw in:
I have had the pleasure of watching and speaking with both Jon and Jake and must say that I have a lot of respect for these two guys both on and off the field. They are both very passionate footballers who have played at a higher level and therefore are on many occassions (if not all) are targeted by oppositions before even entering the arena. I guess Jake loves to get in their face, whereas Jon will continue to play his game. That's not to say that one is better than the other it's just the way they go about their business.
We all know that Jake polled really well in the first 6 or 8 weeks last year and was on some ridiculous amount of 16 votes and pretty well clear so to say he would have won the medal is a fair enough call, although in saying that how many players would've taken votes away from Jake as opposed to Jon, so he's done a fantastic job to win it regardless of Jake's injury. I would take both players in my team any day and I think that no matter what team you follow both players have proven to be absolute guns in the O&M and deserve the respect of the football community.
Just for the record I was not there when Jake went down so I can't comment on how it happened.

Hey Mike Munro stick to hosting 'This is your life' unless your gunna tell us something of importance or substance
:rolleyes:Yarra have been very quiet on the recruiting front. They will field a team of midgets this year. All there recruits are rake handles and none above six foot. They will be lucky if they can stay off the bottom of the ladder.
Wang are flag favourites easily. Maintained and added to a superior outfit.

so with practice matches coming up and the season fast approaching who are the teams to watch the smokys and the players you think will make a statement in each club??
flag favourite - wangaratta
smoky - corowa
big improver from last year's finallists - wangaratta rovers
big disappointment from last year's finallists - north albury
a few players to watch - karl norman : back at wang rovers, freakishly talented but persistent question marks over commitment to footy. Will be a dominant force if switched on.
jesse smith - ball magnet signed by wangaratta from sanfl. Will be a midfield force, and once mccormick returns wang may well have the 2 best midfielders in the comp.
darren bradshaw - the goal kicking machine has re-committed to wodonga and will get close to the magical 100 for the season.
my revised ladder for 2008 after hearing of some of the confirmed comings and goings at various clubs:
wangaratta
wangaratta rovers
wodonga
corowa
yarrawonga
albury
lavington
myrtleford
nth albury
raiders
I reckon we might be set for a return to the 70's and witness a good old stoush between the 2 wang rivals in the granny. Surely that wouldn't be played at lavi????
anyone else got any thoughts on the fortunes of clubs now that we have a clearer picture of departures and arrivals?

well put peanut i think you might be on the right track with the 2 wang rivals playing a big part and i think the fixture couldnt be scripted better giving everyone a taste in round 2... will be the most anticipated round 2 match in some time...
agree corowa could a smoky too! providing the midfield stays in tact they could figure prominently!!
getting back to the derby clash in round 2... would it be fare in saying that it would be a case of the best midfield in the comp, maggies (including smith, clarke, porters, trentfield) up against the best forward line in the comp, rovers (including cristoforo, silver, norman, hill, platfuss)?

reckon you might be right thinkbig re the round 2 clash. Rovers are going to kick alot of goals this year with the names you mentioned all playing forward, and wang will have a clear edge in the midfield, even without mccormick. Going to be a great battle. Extra incentive for both sides too, wang unfurling the flag and rovers no doubt wanting to spoil the party.
Wang's forward line also shaping up ok, hayse and henry going around again, and they've added hooper who will be a very good O&M player. He won a vfl reserves b&f in 06 after playing only 10 or so games, and would have played alot more senior vfl footy if not for the bullants alignment with carlton. He will be a very good O&M key forward.
The real key to the wang v rovers clashes might be wang's midfield edge and the wang defence. Steer and cosgriff are as good a key defenders as there are in the league. Cosgriff's job on bradshaw in the prelim last year was sensational. Cairns is a very solid 3rd taller option down there as well. Running defenders like symons and trenfield give them alot of rebound too.
i reckon corowa might be set to get under alot of people's guard, especially early on.
thinkbig
18 Feb 2008, 14:18
another good point you make... wang are pretty well set across all lines it seems, but i also think you'll see some of the class of the rovers midfield really shine through with A Hill, J allan, k raven, leading the charge and the likes of tucci webb newcomer Noonan, and also silver can swing through there and impact aswell, maybe they might just have what it takes to take it to the reigning premiers...
do you know when practice matches/intra-clubs are scheduled for either club? or any clubs for that matter
