View Full Version : Next Eagles Captain?
Juddy would have to be, can anyone think otherwise?
This may be a bit premature, but Shannon Hurn would be a chance if something happened to Juddy.

At this stage, Judd. But when Cousins retires or steps down from the role, who's to say that there won't be some young gun to take his place.

LOL what a joke, has yet to play a senior game.

Yeh I know, but because Cousins is quite young it will be a while before he retires. They might not want to give it to someone who will only captain the side for a couple of years, and then go. Cousins himself got it when he was very young and from all reports Hurn is a born leader. I wasn't saying it will definately be him, but IF for some reason it isn't Judd, then Hurn would have to be a possibility.

If Cousins retires when he's 32, then I don't there will be any problems in giving a 27 year-old Judd the captaincy.

As soon as I read the title I just presumed you meant after Judd. We will cross that bridge when we get to it...in 7yrs.
Embley because he's vice captain at the moment and he's from wa
I think we will keep Cousins as captain as long as he plays but then it will get flicked off to Judd or Kerr

Why does everyone see Judd as an obvious choice? i dont understand.
Sure, he's obviously the eagles most dynamic play maker and midfielder. But a star player and a "Leader" are actually very different things..
John Worsfold was far from being the best player for the eagles, yet he was a great leader and a top captain because he was born with strong leadership qualities you could say, he was determined and confident and could fire the boys up and set the example by showing passion and courage.
Now Judd is a great player, but i don't really see those same qualities in him that i saw in woosha's or cousins captaincy to be hounest.
Its unfortunate that sometimes the best captains are actually the older more experienced guys with only a few years left...
If i personally had to pick a captain now, and this is based on purely leadership qualities rather than how long he'll be around, then i'd give it to Drew Banfield. As he's very experienced, confident, and works hard and sets the example.
Judd i still see as too young an inexperienced, even though hes a blitzing midfielder.
However, given 4 or 5 years once Cousins goes then perhaps by then he'll have grown into a good leader but i myself can't really see it.
What about Wirrapunda or Embley or Daniel chick?
Judd is obvious because he stood in last year when Cousins was injured and did a magnificent job of leading the team.
Of the others suggested, Chick is older than Cousins and will retire first, Wirra is unlikely to last longer despite being a year or so younger, and Embley would be behind Judd in the stakes of being a born leader.
Hurn? Somewhat premature call I'd say. Lets see if he adjusts to AFL football before we start bestowing future captaincy on him. Actually my guess is that, assuming Judd never leaves, it will be Cousins until he retires or gives up the captaincy because he doesn't want it any more, then Judd until he retires (or gives it up), and chances are the captain after that isn't even on our list yet.

Agreed across the board.
Think Judd went 6-0 didnt he when he was the captain?

Im pretty sure we lost to port when judd captained, only due to inaccurate kicking 9.22 mind you
other than that he was judd was a great leader on the field.
Hell, why talk about this topic for? Cuzzy has plenty of time left so lets not think too far ahead!!!

pffft, dont be stupid.
Why would Judd leave a champion team and join a loser Victorian team.

Just as a question, do you WCE supporters honestly think Judd is a leader? Yes as tikibird_wink said he is a dynamic player and WCE's best but do you think he can lead the side? He doesn't even see himself as a role model!

Its probly easier to say how he isnt a leader. Quality player, quality person, sets training standard, lifts when the side is down (more than Cousins IMO), sensible on and off field, well spoken, brownlow medalist, one of the most respected players in the comp. He isnt a loud mouth prick like Voss or Buckley but leads with his actions like Hird.

I remember reading the 2001 phantom draft from Matt Burgan and he said that Judd showed great leadership potential and he has handeled himself well on and off the field and always turns it up when its needed
I think Embley would be the next best captain after Judd. He has huge potential!
I reckon It should be out of Chicky,Embers or Wirra, I just think that the skipper should be from WA, I know wirra grew up in VIC but he's been here for 11 years now so technically he is a west aussie

We didn't play Kangaroos in Canberra. We played them at TD and won.
We only played Port Adelaide once and we beat them by 117pts...
