View Full Version : Ruck Stocks

Just finished reading an article on ABC website. Huddo talking about when he will return. They are saying it wont be until finals time next year.
Does anyone else feel a bit vulnerable in the rucking department next year. Clarke is getting on and consistency has not always been his strong point. Great in the taps but once again around the ground the big man does struggle.
I understand we have a lot of great stock around at the moment. Maric, Meeson, Griffin etc. My feeling is unless Maric or Meeson fire next year we could be exposed in this area causing us to struggle.
Thoughts
I've heard some good things about Liam Meeson since the boys have been back at training - particularly from the coach. Also Jack "If it's got a pulse I'll ******** it" Cahill has raved about Ivan the Terrible all season and sees him as being a success at the AFL level.
I'd like to see 1 or both of these boys play this year on a regular basis. Although I might get things thrown at me by other posters, I'd even think seriously about Clarke's role and the amount of footy he gets early on this year. Why not do a Clark Keating and put him in a glass cage until finals time.....:thumbsu:
Griffo has put on a ********load of weight in the last 6 months but will take a while to get used to how that changes his body and performance.
Overall if we can retain Liam and Ivan over the long term - I'm pretty comfortable about our ruck stocks - particularly because most can also play KPs.

IMO Huddo will be back by round 12-15 (SANFL round 12 and 13 and looking for a AFL spot 15)
Mathew Clark has not offered anything around the ground to the AFC since he came hear from Brisbane. His great strength is his tap work if that was to become a disadvantage to the midfield and Meesen and Maric were not ready yet then I would feel that the midfielders would just start rucking defensively and read the other ruckman. Rhett Biglands needs to step up and take the number 1 ruck spot this season or he may find a few SANFL games in 2007 when Bud Hudson is back and Meesen and Maric are looking for a regular spot.

Agree dont think Clarke should be our first or second option. Third definently. We need to throw one of the younger fellas in and as you said the earlier the better. Pre season we should be playing them both. I am sure they will get there chance and hopefully come through with the goods.
NEED THE FOOTY BACK NOW

I am reasonably comfortable with our ruck stocks for season 2006. Sure of one of the experienced lads goes down then we are a bit exposed but whats so bad about that?
We have 3 young ruck prospects that we can give a bit of tase of AFL footy. One of Meesen, Maric or Griffin will step up.
As for Clarke, we can call him a lot of things but I don't think inconsistent is one of them. I think he has been very consistent for us over the last few years. If you are expecting him to take marks around the ground then he is inconsistent or more approprietly non-existant. However, he is very consistent at what he does best and thats ruckwork. I still think he is best tap ruckman in the comp.
I also don't by this idea of "reconsidering his role". The 2 best performed ruckman should get games, regardless of how old or experienced they are. As Craigy wisely once said, the game doesn't know how old you are ;)

Whilst I don't believe we should be handing out gold passes, I would be disappointed if Meesen &/or Maric are not given some games if they are in decent form.

How many clubs have 6 pure ruckmen on their books? We never have before. Usually if 2 are injured they use a makeshift KPP as a ruckman, so at least we're covered there.
In fact we probably have too many and I can see 1 or 2 doing a Barnaby French and leaving for more opportunities, even if Clarke does retire soon. If so should be good trade bait at least.

would like to see us pick another one up like that SA prospect if they are good enough. They always seem to have good trade value and young rucks are a bit hit and miss. Probably one of meeson, maric or griffin wont make it. In terms of this season cant see a problem with giving maric or meeson the 2nd ruck duties make them fight it out for it.

agree. we'll be fine
i really rated biglands season last year, the best he's had.so if he stays fit i see our rucking at worst acceptable
i dont expect a hell of alot out of our young ruckmen but feel the second half of the season will tell us more, our gameplan/coaches impact is not a immeadaite quick fix, i see what we are bieng teached as methodical and sometimes slow rather than motivational/results straight away
our coach and staff our building a culture and its in its infancy,so i give the young lads time and from what i can gather its about effort at our club for them not short term results

Though I thought Biglands went missing a bit in the finals & it was Clarke who stepped up.

But dont you think if their form demands it, they'll 'force' their way in to the team ?

So you went to school and got teached rather than taught. Strange that!

Clarke is one of the best tap ruckmen in the AFL. He belted lade/ brogan in the 3rd showdown in 2005. Whilst in the second showdown in 2005 lade/ brogan beat hudson/ biglands quite easily. I reckon the crows supporters underate Clarke quite a bit. He played really well in the finals too when biglands went missing.
Crows ruck stocks look sound. Will hudson be able to make a comeback from his knee?. That is the big question.

Mark32 is right
I'm about as much of a language nazi as you'll find on here but simple tenses are easy and should not be mistaken for continuous tenses.
Do what i do = if you can't find the right word make one up. :)
I do it all the time when singing in the shower/bath or driving the Camry & it drives my better half mad. :D
As for our ruck stocks well we do seem pretty well stocked at the moment providing the young guns in Maric & Meeson come on as expected.
Big pity about Huddo who was really showing signs of becoming a very dominate all-round AFL ruckman, hope he makes it back next year.

no need to bite his head off for it though mark. :) No need to mention it actually, unless it is continually repeated and makes a sentence hard to read or illogical. Which it didnt.

Is that a question or a statement Jack? I will be 23 years old in 8 days time so I guess in one way I am of the same generation as Mark 32 (and the majority of poster considering a generation is something like 20 years)
His main point was when he went to school it was rammed down your throat.
FFS moron I asked him a question? Did he purposely type the word (Throat or through) or way it simply a typo as it appeared there was bit of satire humour about the crux of that question.

It means you you have no excuse at this age as it certainly wasnt being rammed down your throat at school, (as mark suggests it was with him) so you are just being a pain. Fairly simple. It is your makeup/personality that makes you this way, not something thats been hammered or taught into you.
