Bendigo should win the premiership.

Nope. We lost all of our Bendigo players in the clean out.
i.e. Bullen, Haynes, Hunt, Alvey, Cupido, etc.

How do we assess whether it has been worth it? Was Murphy and Allan worth it? I think we need to see what Campo and Hef can produce on the field AND watch how Matt White and Ryan Jackson go in their careers. I guess we have a young midfielder in Ben Jolley who is our highest rated rookie and essendon would see him as being similar in ability to White and Jackson. Campo will take some pressure off Stanton and Monfries for a couple of years although we are committed to him for two years for significant green.

Yeah but we replaced those players. It's not like they've gone and we don't get any one in place of them.

IMO Campo and Heffernan would want to play a significant role in getting us to the finals and making an impact. It's worthless getting them if this does not happen. I don't think we are close to flag material so can't see the value in getting both of these 2.

Lee, Neagle and Lonergan all have the bodies to make an impact at VFL level.
Should get more out of Johns as well.
Bendigo will miss Richards, Wilson and Hunt the most but if it means Lee gets to play a key role then Essendon will be better for it.

My post was sitting on the fence a bit wasnt it? I'm with you I would have loved us to take a risk on further youth. I would have loved to see a player of White's speed on our list but the dons have played safe. Though we took a senior player last year at this time and he is now in football oblivion.

Though we took a senior player last year at this time and he is now in football oblivion.
So are 3 of the top 5 rookie picks from last year. As well as our first rookie pick (Bain).
No matter which was you go at that stage, it is a large punt.

More than Camporeale given he's a genuine matchwinner rather than a crab who stalls the development of young kids.

Campo's chasing and accountability is worse than Fev's which isn't good for a HBF.
He can't play on the ball any more and won't bring any punch off the bench unlike Ricciardi.

Isn`t that you on the main board calling it a win win situation for both clubs ? carlton save money and Lloyd can look forward to some quality ball ?

Sceptical about Heff, I don't know whether he's still up to it.

Spot on Longy ,Richards and Hunt will be missed a lot and someone has to fill in the role that Wilson played well. Time for Jay Nash to shine:D

No, he was a good player when Carlton were greatand fed off the quality ball Ratten, Bradley, Williams, Brown and Kouta supplied him.
All he cares about is money and his own career not that of his young teammates or his club's future.

Carlton must be composed of Jenga blocks.
Im happy to see Heff back at the club, and Campo should do alright for us next season
And it's not going to be any different over the next 2 years at Bendigo.
Any different to what? Do you mean playing deep into the finals?
You guys should've taken two young players instead.
With this kind of profound insight I have no doubt you have a great career in recruitment ahead of you.

Great pick ups by the Bombers.
Campo gives us the outside midfielder with experience that we need whilst Heff is there for depth as a negating midfielder.
I've had a bet with a Hawthorn supporter that Heff and Campo will play more games combined in the next two years than Beau Muston (pick 23) will play in his career.
I like my odds !!!!!
And if I'm right, it will show once again that picks outside the top 15 in the National Draft are grossly overrated and that experience counts. Big time.

SELDOM has Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy looked as pleased with himself settling into his seat for a news conference. It had been a big win, as big as you can have in the middle of December, anyway.
On one side sat a much-sought recruit, former Blue Scott Camporeale, a player who had caused Sheedy all sorts of grief over the years but who was now one of his own. On the other, a favourite son in Chris Heffernan, whose departure had never sat comfortably with the coach, and who had now returned to the fold.
Collectively, they represent 377 senior games' experience, two premierships and four grand finals. And they've cost the Bombers a relative pittance. Camporeale's two-year deal with the Dons, believed to be between $250,000-$300,000, is about half what he received from Carlton for 2005.
But Sheedy's glee had as much to do with symbolism as dollars saved. A moral "wrong" had been righted with Heffernan. Camporeale, one of just two survivors from Carlton's most recent premiership in 1995, had been pilfered.
"It's like them getting Dustin Fletcher or someone," Sheedy quipped as the happy gathering broke up. Asked about Collingwood's alleged interest at one stage in the Blue veteran, Sheedy laughed that he hadn't been worried. "If Mick was going to get Scotty, he wouldn't have mentioned it. So when he said he probably would consider it, that meant he didn't consider it. It's good to see Mick having a bit of fun, doesn't happen too often.

"We've needed to bolster our midfield up, and we think with Scotty and Chris we can do that. These guys can add 40 possessions to our team, and that's a lot of possessions. That's something we haven't had."
Camporeale, who turned 30 in August, estimated he could play as many as four more seasons of AFL football. "There were a few reasons, but the biggest one was just the enjoyment factor," he said of his move. "I'm late in my career and just wanted a change and wasn't really enjoying myself, and I just feel like a new recruit now. I didn't sleep last night, I was like a new draftee."
Camporeale said the disillusionment of his fall-out with his old club, and having to train by himself before being given permission to train at Windy Hill, had made him more appreciative of his second chance.
"You certainly learn a lot more about yourself when you get put in that situation," he said. "I've probably been a bit blessed that I haven't had to worry about those sort of things, and I guess I've been a bit ignorant towards that.
"Essendon is a great club. I've played a lot of times against them, and really enjoyed playing against the group of guys they've got here. I think they've got a good mix between young and old guys that can definitely play in finals, and hopefully win a premiership in the time I'm here."
Heffernan said the biggest difference in the club in the three years he was gone was a much younger playing group. "But a lot of everything else that makes up a club is pretty similar, and that gives a club stability, and that's why it's a good club.
"I'm 26 now, and I want to play (next) year as well as I've ever played. There's no reason I shouldn't have my best year."
With Sheedy 100% on this. Campo's body language is committment to Essendon and Heff was as bad as Hardwick to lose.

Aaron Hamill, you are off the hook. Campo has taken over your role as the player Blues fans are most bitter with fior wanting to leave that proud Over performing club.
Campo will play the role of being fed the ball, we can get the ball, but we haven't had anyone outside of quality to give it to, hopefully now we will be more team oriented.
And he said he would have retired if he had of stayed at Carlton, so chose a fresh start because it is his career that is almost over and he wants to try and achieve the ultimate again. Can't blame him for picking us. Oh, and of course you would stay at your work if you couldn;t work with your boss?

Campo's & Heff's careers were over a long time ago.
Campo was not able to play well at Carlton so how will he perform at another bottom club like Essendon?
Heff has been shocking with the Dees.
Don't expect too much from either of them.

I rekon they could both be handy pickups although Heffernan has struggled in recent years his body language looks good from the highlights i've seen of him at training and anyone who can get the ball 22 times a game in the worst team is decent.

There is no doubt that Campo is an outside player. He is so far outside you hardly even know he is there. I'm sure outside means being just outside a pack or contested situation. Campo understands outside to mean standing all by himself on a wing, waiting for someone else to set him up, or running behind or beside a player who has taken a mark or received a free kick, so he can get the cheapest of all possessions. I'm not so sure that the likes of the Johnsons will be so ready to give him those cheap possessions.

Why do Carlton fans find it so hard to understand that is the role we want him to play?
We want him to get the ball in space, we want him to get free, we want him to run with it, we want him to use his very good foot skills to deliver the ball to our very good forwards in Lloyd/Lucas/Hird.
We don't want or need him to play contested footy, we don't want or need him to play like Jason Johnson, we already have Jason Johnson to play like Jason Johnson. We don't want him to play like Mark Johnson, Mark Johnson can do that.
We want him to find space and kick the footy to our forwards. He's good at that, that's why we got him.

Still doesn't change the fatc you guys can't seem to accept that players WANT to leave Optus. Perhaps you should look in your own backyard to see why?
Campo and team-oriented in the one sentence?
So he was never team oriented at Carlton and yet managed to play how many years there. Astounding.
You haven't seen him dragged to the back flank because he can no longer run out games or keep up with someone like Brent Reilly.
You have zero depth, he adds to our depth. He won;t have to play full games on the ball.
Who are these Essendon players than can get the ball to him?
Very funny. Go back and check the clearances for the last time we played you.
He'll never achieve the ultimate again with are a bottom four side and Sheedy's just trying to keep his head above water but it'll be over soon. The leech doesn't like his boss because he still hasn't come to terms with the fact that he's past it and blames Denis for his own short comings.
Didn't realise that joining a team who finished bottm four means he will stay in a bottom four team.
Does this also mean that all of the other senior players to leave Carlton were past it as well, or perhpas there is a more underlying trend of players and coach not being able to work together. Theres nothing against anyone when a relationship can't form/breaks down. But somehow you have to blame the player. No need for blame.
And finally, what if Essendon are competitve next year, what then for you?
