i watched the original last night on ABC - top shelf. Fay Wray was a choice piece of ass!

Lucky i'm a fan of PJ, or i don't think i would put the $14.50 on! :)

I can't wait to see it. I remember when the Lord of the Rings started I thought they would never live up to the books which I love and how blown away I was with what Peter Jackson did. This is supposed to be just as good.

Jack Black was on Letterman last night talking about it and he is one funny dude. He talked a fair bit about Melbourne too and how he loved spending new year's eve here.

Naomi Watts is perfect as the new Fay Wray, she is so tiny and vulnerable looking.

Did you hear Jack Black talk about Melbourne?:)

Said Melbourne was crazy and everyone was drunk so they also got ********faced and forgot the words to the song!:thumbsu:

Might I ask what else he said about Melbourne? or was it just a quick bit, shame I missed this love Jack Black.

Just a quick bit, but he said Melbourne was known for having great rock audiences.

But he also said he was in Melbourne, Sydney before he corrected himself.

He's a legend and I now have to see School of Rock again.

Did anyone see the original 1933 version on Channel 2 last night?

I'd never seen it before, and to be quite honest I thought it was amazing. Peter Jackson lists it as his favourite ever movie, as does Harry Knowles.

When I was watching it, I was thinking to myself how a 1933 audience would have never seen anything quite like this. It was incredible. Minutes long stop-motion fight scenes, featuring Kong and a T-Rex, Kong and a giant snake, Kong and a Brontosaurus. For 1933 it was mindblowing.

One of those films (the 1993 film I'm talking about) that is almost perfect. The story is such that it takes you somewhere that you know you will never get to in real life, so it is perfect escapism. I can see now why that 1933 version is hailed as one of the greatest films ever made. And certainly one of the most influential.

Looking forward to seeing the 2006 version this Friday.

Agree Dan, taped it and watched it last night. You've gotta watch it with the mindset of never having seen special effects like it. The whole idea of going to a lost island with all those dinosaurs etc. would have been an unbelievable idea back then.

How good was it when Kong was fighting the T-Rex, his wrestling moves were top notch! Bit vicious too, the way he broke old T-Rex's jaw like that.

Who are these tight arses who only go to the movies on tuesdays?

Ooooh, I'm going to save a whole $4.50!

I'd rather pay the extra $4.50 and not have to sit in a cinema packed full of idiots. Go on any other night and you can relax and put your feet up and not have to worry about the inevitable idiots who laugh out loud and make commentary.

The original is a masterpiece that will take some beating(not bad effects for a movie that is over 80 years old)but I am looking forward to Peter Jackson's version.

Dan and Tusken Raider are spot on with their comments about the 1933 original.

70-odd years later we may be churlish about the special effects used. Sure they look a little creaky but even today there is a magic about them. I adore that hand-crafted feel they have (and that of all stop-motion animation) that brings a real humanity to the creatures.

I was first awed by this movie around 30 years ago on late night TV and that flickering old print took me to another world completely. I was a child then but it still have the same effect a couple of nights ago and that is a wonderful thing to be treasured.

Oh...and Max Steiner's score is truly magnificent.

It is hard to believe, but due to the film's success a sequel was rushed out that same year! Son of Kong was, sadly, a flop and is pretty much forgotten, but is still a pretty good film. Worth checking out if you can find it.

Yeah I saw the movie last night - was great... I really appreciated how Peter Jackson allowed Kong and Fay to spend a few moments together in harmony on the ice and to forget about (momentarily) the city's armed forces that were out to kill. A touching moment.

As I walked out of the movie I was scratching my head though - does the beast bleed?! How many times did a T Rex get hold Kong's forearms in their jaws - yet no bite mark or tear?! Even when the bullets kept peppering Kong... not much in terms of wounds evident... but anyway - thats just me being meticulous.. a top movie.

I think there was too much harmony at the end of the movie. All the puppy dog eyes. He's an Ape ffs!

Sick movie though! I especially like the scenes on Skull Island. Man that place is screwed up! Bit far-fetched though...... but if it's entertaining...

Driscoll the director.

Anyone else notice that Andy Serkis was the cook on the boat? He was the one eaten by those disgusting leech things in the lake. he was also KK!

I liked captain Englehorn.

I whinged to my gf about the lack of wind on top of the Empire State at the end of the movie where Naomi and Brody were standing. I wouldve thought youd pretty much get blown off. but meh, thats movies for ya ;)

Maintained my interest for 3 hours so it's a winner. Great special effects. I have a problem with heights so was very uncomfortable with the Empire State Building scenes. Goes to show the camera work was very good to almost put me on top of that building and experience that anxiety.

The Old Dark Navy's

Would have made a good fist of Jurassic Park I guess but JP was about more than just visualising the dinosaurs, it was also about their behaviours, hunting in packs, travelling in flocks etc. PJ certainly has an eye for the blockbusters though.

I don't think Peter Jackson understands dinosaurs too well. I mean, a vulcanic island isn't exaclty the ideal environment for a big herd of Diplodocus. :D The actual Jurassic period itself was dominated by endless, open fields. Hence, the massive herbivores. It was an awesome scene though

Kong was awesome, who doesn't love Kong? The rest of the characters I couldn't really care about though.

The Awesome:
KONG

The Good:
The other creatures
The natives
The island
The captain
The black guy was good although not a big part
The ending, everyone in the cinema was crying haha

The Bad:
The other characters
Lack of dialogue after the first hour
Would've liked Kong to have won in the end, I thought he was on to something good smashing those planes

The CGI looks complete crap from the commercials, the bit where Kong is spinning around (times square is it?) looks like a pinball game or deliberately inserted to sell the video game... rubbish.... bring back Fay Wray

Only saw the film today and you have to hand it to PJ. You can tell that a film has got you in when you feel the relationship between Naomi and the CG Kong - few tears shed by most of those in the cinema (thats amazing when people are shedding tears for a CG character). A bit long but a good film nonetheless.

i found it easy to understand Kong's plight - he was uber-lonely and he just wanted to be alone with his gal! Imagine the poor fem-ape who took poundings in the ace from Kong.

but seriously, i enjoyed the movie a lot - just happy to go into a movie and switch off the brain and just have a feist for the eyes. Glad i saw it on the big screen.

Great to see the Stu character from Frontline getting some good screen time as was Martin Distazio as the fruit vendor!!!

And Naomi Watts looked very yummy indeed!

worst part was when andy serkis (the cook) was sucked into the lake by those leech thingos, one on each arm, leg, one of the body, and one sucking his head off. pure sickness.

Agreed. In terms of the not-shown boat trip back, I wonder how they went about getting Kong on the boat? I guess it'd be too hard to work up a script for that.

Loved the movie but i was confused at a couple of parts, if it was such a remote island how come there was so many dead boddies tied up on those things to feed kong?how come the black people can survive on the island full of dinousaurs, big monkeys, massive bugs etc

id previusly only seen the last version was it around 1970's made? and all i remember from that was the ritual of feeding to kong and a group of campers getten ate/stomped on , no dinours there
