Word up.
Just looking for some opinions on the kid based on his SANFL performances. He was good a few years ago in the U18 carny and the main knock on him seems to be his weight and the fact he plays 3rd tall. He looked fairly solid at the AGM last night, but he was wearing a suit...
We'll probably immediately put him to the senior list in our spare veteran list spot or to replace a LTI lister, so we should see him sooner rather than later.

If you don't give him AFL time, you're wasting his time and yours.

Good SANFL player. Fairly consistent. Plays third tall and would do alright in a Bishop style game. Quick, throws his body around. Good enough skills. Dissapointed we let him go.

100% agree.
He has proven himself in lower grades already. There's nothing left to discover there.
The question is will he make it at the next level and in what position?
To find that out he needs to play in the AFL, not VFL or SANFL.
Waste of a rookie spot IMO. Should have been picked up in the pre-season draft.

Waste of a rookie spot, normally I would agree but the Hawks already have 2 players that can be put on the long term injury list (Muston and Dowler) so that means he is as good as on the list.
The hawks should give him all the pre-season games and take the sink or swim approach with him. No point grooming him more as he has developed his body and football to a level where he will be very good at VFL level so giving him games in the VFL is not going to do much.

The Hawks already have one skinny third tall defender - can they carry another one?

How long until Hawthorn is renamed 'Port Lite'? That's six or seven players, coaches and officials in 2 years. Plus they have their own Mark Williams.

I think that's pretty much what we'll do. We stated publically that we'd take a couple of mature bodies to add depth to the senior list and we took 3 in Kane, Gilham and McGlynn who could step in immediately. We already have a spot where a rookie could be elevated as we only have 1 veteran, and then Muston will probably go LTI list. I think we'll elevate Gilham and Kane early on.
Even if he doesn't work out...you guys have Nat Lonie. ;)

Didnt Fergus Watts kick 10 goals on Gilham in a SANFL final?

I think he did, but just like 1 game does not make a footballer; 1 game does not make a non-footballer.

Watts had about 4 opponents that day. Gilham started on him and had about 4 kicked on him before being moved off. North ADelaides coach said that that game was an abberation for Gilham, he was told the day before he wouldnt be at the Power next year and Jars said he was quite distressed about it. He had a very very good year bar that one match.

He also had a very good third quarter in that match.
I hope Gilham goes on to forge a good career with the Hawks, certainly deserved an opportunity and did not get it with us.
If I was Gilham and saw Bish in the side ahead of me I would realise things were rigged and leaving was the best option.
portentous

I think he's one of those guys that won't quite make it at AFL level but will play really well in the next level down.

I'm hopeful that Hawthorn will be able to advise him on appropriate hair grooming. :p

This is him on the North Adelaide website.
The best Port could do was Photoshop his pic on the PAFC website so he didn't look like Yahoo Serious.

His arms actually look fairly big there...
With Jon Hay gone, I thing we'll rotate a few blokes around the backline such as Gilham, Boyle, Thurgood etc.
Sad and surprised to see him go.

seems a lot of port supporters think he can play a little. can't comment my self because i havent seen him play.
might be a good little pick up :thumbsu:
nathan lonie is a squib, don't expect to much from him guys. really doesnt like body contact at all. but u will all see it soon enough.

...
He has earned a chance to show his wares at the top level.
Certainly a lot here would wish him good luck.

Bit harsh there.
Not every player needs to be hard at it. We are lacking in this department since Schofield started slowing down. (Note the slowing down bit, not "left".)
Hopefully Lonie will fit in just nicely in our team. There is a spot for him to fill if he has the goods.
