View Full Version : Wells & Tiller - their development

There has been quite a bit of chat on our stocks of young KPPs, how they will fit in the Werribee side, etc.

Wells & Tiller seem the least physically developed of the bunch, in Wells' case learning the craft in Werribee seconds. Gieven the number of talls pushing for Werribee senior spots, what are everyone's expectation of these two young guys for next season? They do seem to be young project players who aren't really in contention for Bulldogs senior games next year.

their efforts will be directed towards breaking into the bee senior side, if guys like williams and baird move up to the dogs seniors.

Both players are a fair way off playing for us and they must first establish themselves as senior players for the Bee's. A talented duo but they both still have a fair bit of work in front of them.

On a side note, I'm not sure that Williams is a walk up start to break into our senior line-up like seem people think. I'm sure he will play throughout the season but even given the fact that Eade and others are talking him up I'm not penciling him to play more than 8 games just yet.

We have 15 guys 192cm or taller, plus Hargrave who plays taller than his 190cm, plus Werribee have Podsiadly and Sleeman - that makes 18 'talls' to fit into two sides.

That's a good thing if we have a few injuries (and we're bound to) but if we don't, a few blokes will find themselves in Werribee's reserves.

That might be acceptable for Michael West but I don't think it would be good for the career of anyone else.

It will happen.

For most of the year I see our talls like this:

Werribee 2's : Wells, West & Stevie Tiller (Pushing for promotion to the one's by the end of the year)

Werribbee 1's : Skipper, Tommy D, Baird, Walsh, Wight, Street (if Darcy rucks all game), Williams - With Street, Baird & Williams the better of the bunch for promotion and rotation.

Dogs : Grant, Darcy, Harris, Hargrave, Minson, Bob & rotators on form.

(Hope i didn't gotget anyone.)

Fair rundown BT, although if Bob = Rob Murphy I still wouldn't call him a tall, 186cm is the same height as Cooney

OS - If you do not think Williams will play the majority of games who do you see as the CHB. To me CHB and CHF are our big weaknesses and i had Williams pencilled in at CHb (I am not as big a Morgan fan as some).

CHF is the real worry to me. We either find someone or crucify Grant or Murphy!

I think Baird might end up playing there along with Williams and perhaps Morgan as a back-up.
Eade mentioned last season that he would try and develop a few players at CHB but really just stuck with Grant.
I think Grant could be used there again especially if Darcy is playing well at FF.

we will definately cull some more tall timber next season.

morgan: if he has one more injury problem this season that lasts longer than about a month, he will be encouraged to step down permanently in favour Tommy Davidson.

walsh: he will be given every chance to show his stuff for weribee seniors up forward now that bandy, rawlings and bowden are gone. If he continues to show absolutely stuff all, I think eade would look very hard at cutting him or trying to flog him to the roos. Im not saying he would have to break into the senior side and play 8 matches or anything - just give us something in the bee seniors to show that he is worth persevearing with.

skipper: he will have to push his way into the seniors with devestating performances for the bees. less than that and I would suggest he is gone at the end of the year.

williams, baird and davidson: eade will be looking for at least two of these guys to be regulars in the starting 22 by the end of the year, playing CHB and CHF.

So while we might be a bit top heavy just at the moment, I think there will be 3 or 4 vacancies in the bees seniors to fill next year. then guys like tiller, wells, and maybe west can move up to the bees seniors.

At times he stuck with Grant but he also tried Bowden,Wight,Hargrave,Morgan and others.I dont think he could have done all that much more with his experimentation without it significantly effecting our ability to hold teams scoring.Hargrave basically played there for about a third of the games with a fair bit of success which was a good development for us even if he doesn't play there permanently.

Most of those guys spent less than 1 game each in defence let alone at CHB except for Hargrave who did pretty well at times. I suspect that Baird might be groomed for the spot but also expect Grant to be used there until the likes of Williams get some more games experience even if it is with the Bee's.

Little harsh on Walsh & Skip IMO - Walsh is 20 going on 19 in terms of his development (given his broken leg & finger) and will be given two more years.

Skip has shown plenty on a relatively skinny frame, and although not suited to the role can ruck in short bursts at AFL level.

Eade would be expecting at least one of his talls (recruits or otherwise) to become a seniors regular by the end of the year - Williams has the size now but is still learning and I wouldn't expect him to to do too much. For all the hype, I think he will take longer than expected - he was a gamble as much as Tom Davidson

Id like to see Skip given a good crack roaming around half forward

skoosh, that could work when Darcy's off, with perhaps Minson or Street playing a kick behind the play like Wynd used to in the forward line (when Coleman took ruck).
