Last night I saw a news update on channel 10 i think it was which showed footage of one of the new lads training. It then said something like 'newest recruit finds it tough' with images of a young bloke vomitting. I gather it was Matt Thomas.
I was just wondering if anyone saw the story and can inform me about what happened.

I did not see it and I dont know the answer but I would not expect it to be Matt Thomas as he and Rischbeith both broke the old 3km record at draft camp. More likely to be Looby or Bentley, sounds like a tactic for these guys to let them know that they cant rely on just their talent.

It was young Matty Thomas. It was just on Channel 10 news tonight, but chucking up is showing his commitment, if he wasn't working his a$$ off, he wouldn't be chucking up.

I seem to recall Mark Bickley having a similar story. During the year he was picked up, a couple of the players made a joke about some kid that threw up in the preseason and had a laugh about how he mustn't have been cut out for it or similar. Of course it was Bicks and he kept his mouth shut.
Edit: I recall now that it was that he passed out, not threw up. Ah well, similar enough.

Young Matty also mentioned that he ate too much breakfast before training. That plus the heat and his commitment to proving himself worthy of the Power is what caused him to vomit.

They showed it on 7 and 9 news tonight. He's a solid unit already, can see how he gets a reputation for his preparation. He did a meet the press after and talked about how he likes his footy tough and competitive.

I thought i'd share this with everyone - sorry if its a bit off the topic, but were a happy family at Port Adelaide
Guess what i found out tonight! My mother knows Matt Thomas and his dad, however she failed to notify me as she 'forgot', he was even going to stay with us if he was drafted, but we had to use the spare room as an extra office. Oh well he and his parents are coming over for dinner after christmas, i can't wait :D
I felt sorry for him, his first training session and he vomits, i think he copped heaps from the boys! He loves Port Adelaide already because he believes that they are extremely professional as they bring drinks out to the players - obviously didn't have that luxury back in Vic! His new nickname is officially Chucky

Saturday Advertiser article on Thomas
Run into ground
By DOUG ROBERTSON
17dec05
PORT Adelaide fans can rest assured they have another genuine hard-nut with teenage recruit Matt Thomas running himself sick at Alberton yesterday.
The well-built midfielder/half-back left nothing in the tank in a series of time trials and was physically ill in his first training run with the big boys.
His efforts brought a huge cheer from his unsympathetic new team-mates in a pre-season said by players to be the hardest in Port's short history.
Touted as resembling fearless Michael Wilson for courage and his attack on the ball, Thomas, 18, recovered quickly and later put down a bulked-up Ben Eckermann in a drill with a thumping tackle.
The effects of the ferocious full-body collision took the AFL-experienced Eckermann a few moments to shake off.
"There's no point keeping close to your man if you can't tackle," Thomas said in describing his physical style.
But what about living up to the tag as the next Michael Wilson?
"It's a big rap to live up to, obviously (he is) the vice-captain and things like that," Thomas said. "I like to man-up and I don't mind a physical contest so I guess that's where the comparison comes (but) we'll see what happens in the next few years."
The athletic 184cm, 81kg Thomas seems confident but not cocky.
He played exclusively with Sandringham Dragons in the under-18 TAC Cup competition and for Victoria Metro in the national carnival this year. Now he is in a hurry to make his AFL debut next season.
Overlooked in the national draft after speaking with "six or seven" clubs, Thomas was claimed by Port with selection No. 8 in the pre-season draft on Tuesday. Disappointment was inevitable after missing out in the national draft but it is not difficult to believe Thomas rarely takes a passive approach.
"You (have to) focus straight away because if you dwell on it too long you're out of the system," he said. "So I thought just work hard. I came here (Alberton) for three days then to Carlton for the rest of the time to try to show them I can play.
"And I really do want to play, so thanks to Port for giving me the chance. After missing out (national draft) you know you've got to work a lot harder.
"Now coming into it, it's going to be a hard year and I'm prepared to work for it."
Thomas will train at Alberton until Wednesday when the Power will break for Christmas until resuming on the first Wednesday in the New Year.
All praise the TOM.
New Wilbur hey?
They are probably the biggest boots to fill out our way. Talk about pressure.

Some of it was probably due to nervous energy too. You can see how keen the kid is to make an impression. I've chucked before from nerves.......:(

Pre draft his u18 coach (Xavier Tanner I think) likened him to the Scott brothers at Brisbane. If he brings that sort of combative attitude he'll be most welcome.

I'm as advanced in years as most of those asking about this. But I'm going to guess it is is some way connected to that show around a few years ago called 'Puppetry of the p*nis'

Typical cliche-ridden article. Encouraging signs though, and I especially like the comments about the tackle on Eckermann. They tell me more about the guy than the fact he ran himself into the ground to the point of chucking his guts up.

I liked the comments about Eckermann being 'bulked up' even more. Can some one that has been down to pre-season tell me who has bulked up?

All I'm saying is that I would've been much happier to read that Thomas had done that to Michael Wilson, Toby Thurstans, Josh Francou, Peter Burgoyne or pretty much any other player besides one of the three lightest and smallest on our list.
Yep. I must say i was happy to hear that Eckermann is suddenly 'AFL eperienced'. And here i was thinking it'd take a while.

Unless I'm much mistaken, second from right in the front row is the new `bulked up' Eckermann.

Bloody hell! Hopefully the camera caught him at just the wrong instant but compared to the others he looks almost cachectic!
Haha, i'm not sure that's him, but it does look like it. Perhaps he was running so fast all his muscle shifted and collected on his back?

I've seen a couple of pics and some training footage of Eckermann over the last week or so, and he looked to have put some muscle on since the end of the last season ... but that particular photo is a bit of a mythbuster! Looks like he's gone from the Power list to Schindler's List there ... :p
Thomson (I think that's him next to Eckermann) looks like he could use a bit more time in the weights room, while Surjan (I think that's him in the background) looks fairly solid.
