View Full Version : How do you think we will go this year?!!

The Carlton footy board is probably not the best place to ask this question because for the past few years we as supporters have over-estimated our team... But.. what do you really think? How will we do?

We've got 10 teenagers on our list and another 7 or 8 who have yet to prove themselves and there's only 39 on our list, so I think we'll finish in the bottom 2 next year.
But I am very optimistic about 2007 - 2015::D

Bottom four, anything better than that is a pipe dream.
Somewhere between 10th and 7th in 2006. We'll have to wait until 2007 before the Blues has enough experience to make a serious impact. :)
Bottom four, if we do a Richmond i won't be happy and btw i wanna ask does the new PP system continue from last season, like if we get under 20 points next season do we get say pick 1,2,20 or does it start next season?
No one will be able to get a PP before the 1st round starts since all teams won more than Four games last year.
Second bottom. We probably have the worst list at the moment, but someone else will bottom out. In modern footy its pretty unlucky to finish bottom twice in a row

I dont really mind where we finish, as long as it isnt in the last few (would like to see 10-12, probably unlikely).
What I am much more interested in is the development of our younger group, and hopefully seeing a much more consistent effort throughout a match and the season.

Bottom four but with a similar effort as Hawthorn this year with young players coming in to freshen up the side.

We need to face reality. A club's performance is generally determined by the top tier players, and by whether significant injuries lead to too many sub-standard players getting games.
There are still too many games where the club is getting thumped to think that the end is yet in sight.
Realistically it would be folly to expect serious contributions from any of this years draftees, Saddington (injury affecting pre-season yet again) and McLaren (really is a back up ruckman at best) included.
Therefore, on the negative side, in terms of top end talent, we've lost Camporeale. On the plus side we should get more out of Fev and Lappin. But we wont get any more out of Whitnall, Kouta and maybe only a smidge more out of Stevens.
Despite the hopes for Waite, Fisher and Walker, they would have to make dramatic improvement to become regarded as top shelf performers. It would be fairer and more realistic to suggest they would become regarded as 'good' AFL players this year (maybe Waite already is so that may be a touch harsh). All the discussion about Bentick, Simpson, Russell and Hartlett needs to be put in its place: at best in 2006 they may consolidate positions as AFL players. Not cause for anything more than that. Therefore they won't be capable of making any genuine contribution to a move up the ladder.
So at the top end it remains thin, with only a few 'promising' types looking capable of stepping into the elite range.
The club is a long way behind the Hawks, Pies and Bombers - other teams who have more young talent (eg: Hawks) and much better top end talent (Pies and Bombers).
As another poster has suggested, another club may have a shocker, but we would be very unlikely to finish out of the bottom 3, and much more likely to finish bottom two.

Being realistic the best carlton can hope for in 06 is bottom 3, the club is finally doing the right thing and looking to youth, unlike a few years ago when we took 10 or so hasbeens into the club.Patients is the key word for all carlton supporters, our time will come again, but it may take longer than we all hope for.
All these comments are as you say from people who have overestimated carltons potential at some point in the last 4 years and so are not willing to contemplate any resurgence what so ever. The truth is however we will make the 8. There i've said it,...... skin me, salt me, hang draw and quater me, but come next season remember this......bookmark it.
There are atleast 5 teams that have worse lists than Carlton.

I am perfectly happy to contemplate a pretty successful resurgence. I just think its unrealistic to expect it to happen overnight. The club has done the right thing, and started to build the list for the next decade. I would be upset if we were just chasing another temporary rise to 9th or 10th next year.
we dont have the worst list, we have the second worst :p
Collingwood is the worst with their great dependance on players 28+, we will go up in the ladder quicker than them.

we'l' win between1-13 games i say be 10 wins :) against Essendon, hawthorn, collingwood Geelong the Sides we play twice we'll win both times
like against the Bombers :) at least we know how to beat them at their own game :) take out LLoyd ,Hird and the Johnsons & Fletcher .
and a few others too just shut them down ;) we learnt the keeping off from
Essendon very handy the last few minutes in the final Quarter, especally when its close

I reckon that if Carlton takes the same sort of attitude as Wigan in the EPL when playing against better squads... i.e. they can beat them... and play good attacking football, then I am sure that we are going to do well...

Carlton will win games next year that nobody expects them to win, but on the flipside will also lose games that they probably should win. Look for a little bit of momentum late in the season if they string together a couple of consecutive wins. When a group of young kids get a sniff it is amazing how the confidence will spread like wildfire.

We have done the hard work, we have scrapped the bad players and we now have a list. How is playing for a win scrapping all the good work. Thats insane. We dont need to throw any more games or seasons, we have what we need and we can go pretty much all the way. Pagan is a master at taking teams from last to first. He has done it before. He NEEDED 2005 priorities to finish off the work of the previous few years. Its now done. Now we aim for the top. Saying that aiming for the top is aiming for mediocrity is mediocre in itself.
Explain why trying to win is chasing a temporary rise ?????

Firrst of all I am optimistic - I am talking about a decade of success coming our way, not just 22 weeks.
Second, I think season 2004 (or Wizard Cup 2005) shows how wasy it is to mistake short term improvement as an indicator of long term success.
On my count we have 10 promising teenagers, plus another five promising guys who are really only 2 - 3 year players. I want to watch these guys develop into stars of the next decade. I'm much less fussed about whether we win 5, 6, or 8 games next year.

Oh yeah and as for the rest of the TAC players that you claim towelled him up during the season, by saying that you've made me even happier we got muprhy .. Just refresh my memory, 'chewy', was it Murphy or Douglas that the Lions offered a 5 year contract to? Or would you have us believe that the Lions wanted to recruit a dud at a time when they know they need to start a rebuilding process very soon.
I would suggest that with your great foresight and knowledge of young players, that all 16 recruiting officers would be beating a path to your door. Not!

you know for the past 5-10 minutes, ive been contemplating a much bigger issue .. and that is whether I should even bother replying to anything you type on here anymore, I mean .. logic and common says tells me no ... my heart and sense of humour tells me yes ...
so seeing as though you dont come off as the sharpest tool in the shed, I'm going to break down all of the senseless arguments you've posted so far in no particular order:
1) Murphy is a dud and gets towelled up - Yet, he averages 28.5 possies a game in the TAC and dominates the clearences in the Championships.
2) Carlton got sucked in by recruiting Murph - Yet, Richmond, Collingwood, Hawthorn and probably others had him as their number 1. Also, pretty rich coming from a Richmond supporter .. I mean after all .. you did take Adam Fiona instead of Pavlich (that makes me laugh even when im asleep)
3) "The coach tells the players to kick it to Murphy at all costs" - But I thought you said he was a dud ?, Ive never known a dud to be the main man in a side with the likes of Dowler also in it ?
4) He kicks clangers - Yet, Brisbane were prepared to offer him not 1, not 2, not 3 but a FIVE YEAR contract, and the above teams as mentioned before; would have taken him with their number 1. Yeah, im sure the recruiting managers of each side dont know as much about Murphy as you, obviously they should have consulted you first right ??
and for the finale:
5) Richard Douglas > Marc Murphy - Yet .... BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Of course those people that hand out the Larke Medal each year know diddly-squat about young talent or did the Herald Sun lie about Murphy winning the Larke Medal. No doubt if it was up to you it would have been awarded to Jarred Oakley-Nicholls.
Just so we can have a bit of a laugh, please do tell who you think should have been taken No.1 in this years draft.

i would love to hear ur thoughts on those 5 teams.
Firstly Melbourne... they're all getting towards the latter stages of their careers and they don't have one dominant key position player since the slow wane of David Neitz.
Secondly Hawthorn... Only because they are far too young and won't start moving up the ladder until atleast three years. Roughhead will be an All-Australian Full-Back in time though.
Thirdly Kangaroos... A hell of a lot of heart, but not a whole lot of talent.
Fourth Geelong... Not as much potential as some experts would have you think and probably not a finals side this year. Good backline though. I'd rather be Carlton than Geelong at this point.
Fifth Richmond... still a lot of dead wood in there.
who cares what Richmond supporters think or say, i hate when this happens to a topic. When someone posts in the Carlton board its meant for Carlton supporters or oppostion supporters who have some respect as where they are posting.
