View Full Version : Lee is the new McGrath: Lillee
DENNIS Lillee yesterday handed over his world record to Shane Warne then claimed that another major handover had taken place in Australian cricket.
Lillee believes Brett Lee has replaced Glenn McGrath as Australia's spearhead after the blond quick yesterday completed his first five-wicket haul against South Africa and sixth of his career.
The Proteas were bowled out for 296, a first-innings lead of 38, which Australia had erased by stumps for the loss of Matthew Hayden.
While Lillee praised Warne for breaking his record of 85 wickets in a calendar year, he was just as excited about Lee's performance.
"Brett's steadily improved over many years," Lillee said.
"He has learnt to bowl now a more consistent line and length. He uses the yorker and bouncer sparingly and it probably has more effect.
"He is pretty much a complete fast bowler."
Asked whether Lee was now Australia's pace spearhead, Lillee said: "Absolutely. I would dare say McGrath would certainly be happy to take the pressure off himself for a start. It doesn't mean McGrath is any lesser bowler, (but) certainly Brett seems to have taken the mantle of leading the attack."

Eat your hearts out all you Lee bashers. :o
I suppose you will now claim Dennis Lillee has no idea about fast bowling. :D
Oh...... and Eddie about your claim on Lee getting tailenders out. Have you forgotten there is also another bowler operating from the opposite end?

How well has he gone so far with the claim that Johnson is a once in a generation fast bowler?

Yep good call muppet.
Anyone who believes these comments are anything other than an attempt to fire up a flat Glenn McGrath is blind as a badger.
Brett Lee is not fit to be compared to McGrath's anus, and never will be.
Watch Glenn come out in the 2nd innings and claim 6/20.

Johnson drafted into one-day squad

Mitchell Johnson's dramatic season has continued with the Queensland left-arm fast bowler called into the Australia one-day squad as back-up for the final match of the Chappell-Hadlee Series. Australia secured the trophy with a two-run win last night, but Johnson was picked as cover for Brett Lee, who returned home for treatment on a nasal condition.
Johnson, a 24-year-old who has played only 12 first-class games, was due to fly to New Zealand this afternoon and Trevor Hohns, the chairman of selectors, said it would be a good opportunity for him to get a taste of the team's environment. "Mitchell is a young player that we've had our eye on for a while," he said. "We felt this was an ideal opportunity, with one game to go in the series, to get him involved. It is certainly a selection with a view to the future."
Dennis Lillee spotted Johnson at a North Queensland training camp when he was 17 and quickly labelled him a "once in a generation bowler". However, Johnson's rise into the state ranks was troubled by three seasons of injuries, mostly to his back, and he only became a first-choice player for Queensland this year. Johnson will join an inexperienced fast bowling squad of Bracken, Clark and Lewis in New Zealand for the final match at Christchurch on Saturday.
"Even though it's only for one match, I'm pretty excited to be given the chance," Johnson said. "I'm thrilled that the selectors even have me in their thoughts."

Exactly. McGrath is our greatest quick of all time and so far ahead of Lee it is not funny.
If Dizzy and Kaspa kept thier form going, Lee would still be carrying the drinks.
McGrath 534 wickets, 21.27 Average
Lee 179 wickets, 31.82 Average
He will never be a better bowler than McGrath, until Pigeon retires of course. Lillee's comments are a slap in the face of McGrath.
Watch out for McGrath in the second dig.

When you get a chance check out the 2005/2006 Test stats. It's all about the "now", not ancient history :)
What are your thoughts on Lillee proclaiming that Johnson is a once in a lifetime bowler? The article has been put up for everyone to read.

What are your thoughts on Lillee proclaiming that Johnson is a once in a lifetime bowler? The article has been put up for everyone to read. He may well be right....... but unlike a few self-proclaimed BF experts I prefer to wait and see. It will be interesting how he goes under our new fast bowling coach
Here's another recent opinion:-
"Mitchell Johnson is Australia's most exciting fast-bowling prospect since Brett Lee first dyed his roots. He's quick, he's tall, he's insanely talented, but most of all, he's a left-armer. Only the digging up of a blond legspinner can create more excitement in an Australian cricket scene that has seen just two of this style of diamond - Alan Davidson and Bruce Reid - pass 100 Test wickets. With best first-class figures of 5 for 43 from his first 12 first-class games all predictions have been built on promise and the caveat "if he can stay fit".
Dennis Lillee fell hard and instantly when he spotted him as a 17-year-old at a Pace Australia camp and called him "a once in a generation bowler". Lillee immediately phoned Rod Marsh, who was then the Australian Academy head coach, and Johnson was quickly headed to Adelaide and the national under-19 team. Injuries, mostly to his back, kept interrupting his long-term plans but he played a full season in 2004-05 and has been a fixture with the Queensland Bulls this summer after being picked for Australia A's tour of Pakistan.
Another representative catapult arrived in December when Trevor Hohns launched him into the Australian one-day squad for the final match of the 2005-06 Chappell-Hadlee Series in New Zealand. At 189cm, he has the height to worry batsmen and he is intent on scaring them as well. Shane Watson, his Queensland team-mate, has been wildly impressed. "He has just about the most talent I've ever seen in an all-round athlete and I've only seen him playing cricket. If he can keep improving the sky's the limit." Peter English December 2005"

Lee's been decent since coming in for the Ashes... but he'll never be as good as McGrath.
If he did say Johnson was a once in a lifetime bowler in that article, it would have been taken out of context and it was a "guess" to how good Johnson would be when he was a Junior.
Explain why he is the most sought after bowling coach in the world, why he headed the AIS bowling academy for many years and is probably one of the Worlds best ever bowlers.
I think Lillee knows what he's talking about & he would know more about bowling than any of you.

So you think Johnson at 24, is finished and will be a hack? Still a long way to go for the young man mate.

The call on Johnson was made when Johnson was just a kid but an outstanding junior and what he could be in 10 years.
The call on Lee being the new spearhead comes from a direct observation right now.

He kept saying how he'll be the greatest fast bowler of all time 5 years ago
That's coz he coached him since his mid teens
And there will never be another Pigeon McGrath, no one will ever get as good
