View Full Version : Dogs supporters are everywhere.
Has anyone else noticed how many Bulldogs stickers are on the backs of cars lately. I spend a fair bit of time on the road and cannot believe the level of support we seem to have at the moment, not just around the Western suburbs but other areas of Melbourne as well. I even pulled into a carpark in country Victoria this week and there were three cars in a row all sporting Doggie stickers. Hope this all translates into record membership and bumper crowds to watch the most entertaining side in the game in 2006

It's a worry. If there are too many, we might become common, like all those uncouth Essendon and Collingwood bandwagonners.

I said the same thing to my wife driving along the highway to Warburton last week.
Heaps of 2005 member stickers on the back of cars

I'd be willing to bet there are more Bulldog car stickers on cars parked at Essendon train station than there are Essendon stickers most days.

Yeah, I have noticed this too. We seem to have more supporters than anyone, yet the least members.
We are reported to have the highest turnover of new members in the AFL, up to 25% pa (North Melb have close to our turnover too apparently)
If we were to retain members yearly membership totals above 30k would be much closer than many realise

Perhaps it's that a higher proportion of Footscray supporters put stickers on their cars than do supporters of other clubs.

So true. Essendon the area is a hotbed of Footscray supporters. Has been for over 45 years.
If Footscray could ever make a Grand Final, it would be very interesting to see Puckle Street, Moonee Ponds, or Union Road, Ascot Vale.
For some reason it is always assumed that Footscray supporters that moved out of Footscray only headed in a western direction to Werribee, Melton and Hoppers Crossing. This occured no doubt about that.
However many others headed north to Essendon, Moonee Ponds, Strathmore, Avondale Heights, East Keilor, Niddrie etc.
The other side of this is comparing the stickers in Sunshine and St Albans. Plenty of Collingwood one eyes in Alfrieda Street, dwarfing Western Bulldogs bumper stickers.

I was watching the premiership parade down Puckle street in '85 and I remember a vast number of Footscray jumpers amongst the crowd.

Sad but true.

When I loved in Moonee Ponds, getting the Broady line train to Doglands was a hellish experience when we played Essendon cause I was vastly outnumbered! Even when we played the Roos I was pretty lonely.
But this year, particularly towards the end of the season, the Sydenham line train was rocking with Dogs fans. Night games were great, loads of teens with their vodka mixers singing the club song. The train back was even better when we won.
There aren't as many of us as there should be in Sunshine and St Albans, though.

I have noticed the high number of Doggies members stickers as well... I was beginning to wonder if I was really just seeing the same vehicles on the way to/from work.
I just cut the Cyberdoggie logo out of the members sticker and put that in one corner of the back window.

Sad to say but you will find more Footscray supporters in Hoffmans Road on the Essendon / Niddrie border heading towards Boundy's in Essendon or the Keilor Road shops than you will in the Sunshine CBD or St Albans CBD.
Well sad about the two S's but it's great about Hoffman's Road.
One of those you could often bump into would be Mark Hunter's uncle. If ever a bloke looked like the quintessential senior age Footscray supporter it would be this gentleman.

Most people think that Brunswick is blues through and through, but Ill tell you there are a tonne of dogs stickers and fans up here. There is usually a good turn out at the Quarry for fox footy games too. I think we are doing the work of good behind enemy lines.

i live in eastern suburbs and there's always a fair number of dogs fans around here.
never bad getting the train in, as there's always about a 50/50 split with whoever we're playing

We moved from West Footscray to East Keilor when I was 5 years old. Growing up in EK and going to primary school in the early-mid 70s, after Essendon supporters, Footscray supporters were the most represented (Essendon was probably 70%, Footscray 10-15%, ata guess). A lot of them were families where one or both parents grew up in the Footscray area, then moved out to the newer suburbs, of which EK was only 10 mins from Western Oval. Once I progressed to secondary school in Essendon proper, though, the percentage swung heavily in favour of Essendon.

I remember statistics a few years ago showing that we have the highest fan:member ratio in the league, though that could be because we have fewer fans. I believe it is because we know better than most how important it is to be a member. Anyway, the figure was about 67%. With recent changes in home venue, and indifferent performances for half a decade, I would not be suprised if our membership base has a high rate of 'churn'.
By the way, I live in Hawthorn and there is always a bulldog or two on the tram before and after games.
