I wonder if it's Shaggy that Eade is trying to free up from the back line? Monty could take a lot of the players only Shaggy could possibly take in past seasons.
I like the idea a lot. Ryan Hargrave in the forward would be hard to find a match for. He'd be to quick for most taller defenders and could just drag smaller defenders back to the goal line then outmark them.

I was having a look at the possible team line-up options last week and threw around a few with Hargrave as a forward and I think it is a decent option.
Not sure if it is likely consideration with Eade given the way Hargrave consolidated himself as a very good defender last year but it could be worth experimenting with it in the preseason comp.
Morris might be asked to match-up on the players Hargrave would otherwise get. I think the idea is subject to finding a genuine key defender to help Harris.

I floated the idea elsewhere of trying him on-ball as well, not for long, just half to a full quarter, to throw the opposition matchups out. He likes the contested possession scenario, but I agree a forward switch could work as well - as his game develops over the next few season, he could be one of the most versatile players we have.

I think that hargreave could make a decent forward, and that eade might be tempted to play him as a CHF if our other 'ready to play' options such as Morgan, Baird and Davidson arent making the grade.
However, if one of those specialist forwards can stand up, then we are probably better served with hargreave fighting in his own weight division in the backline - eade is going to great lengths to get some experience and improvement into our defence, and hargrave is our 2nd most experienced defeder behind Smith. 3rd if you count Mony I suppose.

Shaggy played most of his junior footy as a forward.
I kind of like the way he played last year. As a backman who runs forward and kicks goals. He seemed to pop up all over the place. Very difficult for his opponents.
He has always backed his judgement and it appears Eade has encouraged him to play this style of game. Chris Grant played a similar role at times.
I reckon Hargrave is more value in this type of role at the moment. That is a backman who can attack.

It'd be worth trialling no doubt about it. BUT, it would depend on other talls being able to a similar or better job than he is doing at CHB. That may not happen in 2006. If it does then it could be great to see him up forward.

Well said. I agree. Hargraves is better suited to the backline at the moment, with maybe pinch hits in the forward line.

I think he would be good on the wing as a marking option coming out of defence
I'd prefer not to see him as a CHF or CHB - as many have suggested he can run and carry and as a third tall presents a difficult matchup for the opposition.

Good call that. I'm sure I recall Rocket mentioning last year that he liked the idea of Hargrave as a forward. Quality utility the lad will become over the next couple of years.

if you're going to try him at CHF do it in the NAB cup. i know its not the best indication eg carlton but it should still show us how he will do in that position.
the only problem with moving him is finding another tall defender to take his place, which is why i think he should stay where he is

I'd hate to see Shaggy being a main target in the forward line. Third man in and he'd be almost unstoppable-Match him with guys who are bigger than him and it'll be Steve Kretiuk all over again.
I reckon Kretiuk unfairly battled against the opposition monsters most weeks because we played him out of position and didnt give him a chance.

kretiuk played out of position because we had no-one better to play in that position
ryan will never be played as a main target, no coach would be stupid enough
he doesn't have the smarts to take on that responsibility yet anyhow
as a 2nd or 3rd tall he could prove to be very handy

That's my point. We were lazy with Kretiuk, just assuming he could take the gun forward week after week, without finding an alternative. It cost him his career in the end.
