Pearce the new No. 16
10:01:45 AM Tue 20 December, 2005
Port Adelaide Football Club
Lightning quick teenager Danyle Pearce will see thousands of kids with his number on their back in 2006 after taking on the Port Adelaide No. 16 guernsey made famous by Warren Tredrea.

Tredrea will move to the traditional captain’s number, No. 1 in 2006, leaving the No. 16 guernsey available for the first time since the Power entered the AFL.

Many players had joked this off-season about taking Tredrea’s No. 16 so that “half the crowd at AAMI Stadium will have my number on their back” but it was Pearce who went through with it.

He moves from the rookie-list guernsey No. 41, which he wore in seven matches in 2005.

There was one other guernsey switch. Steven Salopek, who had worn No. 31 in his first three seasons at the club, will take on Brett Montgomery’s No. 3 guernsey.

Of the new players, Daniel Motlop has taken the No. 15 guernsey formerly worn by Byron Pickett and Michael Wilson, while 17-year-old Jon Giles becomes only the second player to wear No. 38 for the Power. That was the guernsey Roger James made his own.

The full list of guernsey numbers for the 2006 season is as follows (new ones for you to learn this summer are in bold):

Bit odd for Lonie to go for a number so late.

Hopefully Nick Lower can rehabilitate the number 26.

Number 26 should have been retired for a few years, but for the opposite reason that 16 should have.

Geez thats a good looking list with the great man himself at the top. Thanks *PAFC*13. I cant believe its STILL more than three months till the opener. Blimey has this off season dragged on or what.

My son and I were privileged to see Pearce's first game, and first goal. I told him he'll dine on that for months when Danyle turns in his 300th in 10 years or so. Number 16, eh? Them's big boots to fill, I sincerely hope it doesn't go to his head.

Me to. I have worn Number 15 on my back, ever since Choppy arrived and took it on at Port. Got it signed by him over here when he played his 150th, and wore it Grand Final Day......was a proud day that day, knowing I was walking around Punt Road with the Norm Smith Medal winner on my back :D !! But it now hangs in the cupboard as a memory of what was - he is gone, so hence so does that gursney.

I move onwards and upwards now - from 15 to 16!! I love Pearcy, and I see something dam special in him, and if Tredders thinks he is good enough to wear the all mighty Number 16 makes it even better!! Hope to get him to sign it on his 50th, 100th, 150th, 200th and on!!

I cant bloody wait for season 2006 to start.......just reading everything about what is going on down at the club, and it just seems so much more settle, so much more prepared ALL READY than we ever looked in 2005. Issues resolved before Xmas that were still hanging over our heads before Round 1 this year, new training ideas, new players, young players......yep, it looks to be a Powerful 2006!!!

Pearcy is a funny little bugger, just the way he chases and always is smiling. He makes me happy to watch.
