Given the terrible news, I suppose this question has to be asked.
Johnno again, West or one of the younger brigade?
I hope it's Gian. Again. Like i did last year.

I don't think its even an issue unless Darcy retires or officially steps down from the captaincy. If he doesn't, Johnson will step in as vice captains do when your captain is injured. Surely nobody would suggest Johnno should be demoted from that role?
If the captaincy is opened up permanently, i think Johnno is the man to take over anyway, without any doubt at all. None of the younger guys are good enough consistently enough to be serious contenders. The only other possibility i see is that Westy may have played himself into contention last season, after not being in the equation when Darce got it because of his nibble at Essendon.
Lets look at this year. I thought Johnno was a very good stand up captain and i think that he really deserves to captain us in 2006

With the curse on our captains, who'd want it?
Do we have an inspirational leader? Someone who will lay that hard tackle, kick that goal or give the speech to fire the boys up at 3 quarter time of a final?

Rotate it just like Sydney did this year.
Give Gia,Murphy and Bubba a chance to lead them out.

Can we not have a captain in 2006? They're cursed!
Lets rename the no. 1 leadership position.
Vote #1 Johnno - Alpha Dog, Grand Poohbah or something like that.

I like this idea in these circumstances - and it didn't do Sydney any harm.

I think you have it in a nutshell there... It is a bit of a problem. Personally I dont think Johno is the ideal captain, but he may be the best option we have. Maybe he can grow into the role.
makes me wonder why west isnt even in the leadership group, let alone captain - must be a personality thing - he certainly leads by individual example on the field, but maybe he is too introverted to do the PR work as well?

Eade didn't consider him because West made steps to get to Essendon, and "you don't reward that with the captaincy", or words to that effect.

Give it to Jade Rawlings or Nathan Brown.

I really don't like talking about this today because it is just dreadful news for Darcy and the issue of captaincy is fairly insignificant in the whole scheme of things.
Regarding Guido, I wasn't so sure about it last year but I'm warming to that idea. He showed plenty of leadership qualities today and it could be a good long term decision.

Yeah. I'm.. spechless. Can't believe it.
Eade said Johnson will be the Captain though. Fair enough. Deserves it.

leave it a few week before bringing this up
Eade has announced that Brad Johnson will be captain.
I hope they don't go through the entire season calling him the 'acting captain'.

this thread sured be dogs vice captain for 2006. Probly out of Guido,Murph,Hahn or west
Mr Grumpy formally known as Mr Smiley prior to his sudden elevation to captaincy last year will lead the troop's again this season.
I dont think this is such a bad thing.
His old mates Westy and Smithy will cop a Mr Grumpy spray if their performances displease him (both at the club and at dinner with him "double wammy") as will his previous leader Chris Grant.
Mr Grumpy will no-doubt lead the team like their is no tommorow, knowing that his future TV career and lifelong earning potential depends on it and the 2006 premiership will deliver it to him.
I am comfortable knowing that Mr Grumpy will extract the "enth" degree of performance from the troop's and coach, even though toe's will be tread on.
Mr Smiley's progression to Mr Grumpy is part of our progression from good guy's almost their to the real deal.
Good luck Mr Grumpy I think your the captain we had to have to win a flag.

eade said crossy has been put into the leadership group as well
the issue is really who will be vice captain, as i believe johnno will be official captain.
gia showed he is a leader even though he's not among the oldest players there, like hodge at hawks

Does Cross really convey leadership potential? I think he is even quieter than Johnson. Cross is a nice bloke and a great player for us but Im not sure about being added to an extended leadership group. Not sure if Eagleton is in that group but I would have him in there.

eagle is in the leadership group already. i think cross is in there because of his attitude and the way he trains, he really sets an example as no one would work as hard as him on the track

Chris Grant was a quiet country kid and a nice bloke. Didn't make him less of a captain.

I subscribe to the school of thought that says leaders need to make some noise, and command respect of team mates. Personally, I didn't think Granty was a great captain, and he plays better without it resting on his shoulders. I reckon we have a few that are up to it.

I was referring to the luck our captains seem to have, we would probably have a new leadership group half way through the year
