What a difference a rope makes (and also, maybe, newer bats).

A few years ago sixes on the G were a rarity. The boundaries were "too far away" so nobody went for them. Since they've moved the rope in just a few metres, players make the effort.

Today Symonds and then Hayden were hitting them ten to twenty rows back into the crowd, way beyond the old fence.

I guess it's further proof that cricket is a psychological game.

The MCG has held 98* matches, and in those 98 matches, a total of 178 sixes, starting in 1882.

Here are some statistics I bored myself to death collating, and you will see here that Andy Symonds onslaught today put him in some records.

AUS PJP Burge 3
AUS JL Langer 3
RSA JH Sinclair 3
AUS JR Thomson 3
AUS VT Trumper 3
ENG G Ulyett 3
ENG MP Vaughan 3
ENG C White 3

MOST SIXES IN AN INNINGS - MCG

I think it is fair to say that the rope was introduced in the Ashes series 2002/03, give or take 1 year, but since then, this is what has happened. You will find matches before that had nothing on these latest.

2002/03 - AUS v ENG - 14 sixes
2003/04 - AUS v IND - 7 sixes
2004/05 - AUS v PAK - 14 sixes
2005/06 - AUS v RSA - 12 sixes

Craig White is on that list. Yep, I'm scared now.

Yeah, he hit 3 sixes in an innings of just short of a hundred here in the 2002/03 Boxing Day Test Match. Strange things, Colin Miller hit 2 sixes, 1 in each innings (i remember each one) in his only Boxing Day test appearance against the West Indies in 2000/01

Most of Symonds sixes went over the boundry - therefore ropes don't really matter ;)

he does state this, he is saying because the boundary is closer people are more willing to go for it, and they hit it well over the old boundary

Hayden, Hussey and Symonds made the MCG look like an English ground.

I remember the hook he hit for six, he hit nixon mclean for 6 the morning steve waugh got his ton,
some blokes behind us had been giving it to nixon, all moring and that just sent them over the edge, quite a funny day,
Bicheal got 5 for that afternoon and even tried on a irish baggygreen down at fine leg just in front of us, after some blokes through it to him.
and when ever slater left the fine leg region, we started up the song
"cya later micheal slater"
aw good times, im gon to stop my rant now

Yeah was gonna say Bichel bowled the best that day/game, but then again this is about sixes so didn't mention. I think we need a Boxing Day moments thread. :p

reason???

is it the sponsor triangular ropes, or all ropes...ie. The fence is the boundary, ie. Dangerous.

Nah the ropes will be back where they used to be, about 2m in

That's alright then, yeah, was shorter boundaries but didn't make a difference ;)
