Do you think they'd become our no.1 rival ala Port/Crows, Dockers/Eagles?
Would be fun to have that cross-town rivalry/hatred. :D

It is hard to say. A lot of Brisbane membership is on the Gold Coast, and I can't predict how many will switch. I would have Southport as my second team, and hopefully watch them play a bit. When they played each other, I dunno what I would feel. Lets try it!

History shows in other sports that it doesn't realy work w.r.t. rivalry. Queenslanders seem to be more parochial with their sporting teams in the sense that if it's a Qld team they'll support it, but just not as much as their no.1 team. It was the case with the Crushers and the Cowboys in the NRL and the Crocs and Taipans in the NBL. OK, there's really only the two sports to draw a comparison from, but I can't see it really developing. Might have been different it was two existing clubs from the QAFL entering the comp - for arguments sake say Morningside and Southport, then you might see a bit more passion, as the rivalry has been building for longer.

Would be fun to have that cross-town rivalry/hatred. :DIt would be fun but I can't see it. At least not in the immediate future. Perhaps the next generation of fans of both would generate some sort of rivalry.

I would support Gold Coast then Brisbane. But there would be no hatred towards either side. There probably would be a rivalry though.

I would most likely dislike them.

As long as people "love to hate" them. That would at least show some respect for the rivalry.
Where would that leave Sydney if Brisbane/Gold Coast was the number 1 rivalry in town? Afterall, 3 is a crowd...

I see Collingwood as our main rival, though Sydney is a close second.
I'm all for the development of another AFL club in Queensland, but yeah, I wont be jumping ship or anything, I love my Lions.

I doubt Collingwood will be a long-term rival. Personally I think there's a better rivalry with Port Adelaide.

Personally I don't see a rivalry with us and Sydney. It is just something the media try to hype up for a qld nsw SOO type thing but it never really took off. I see Essendon as one of our biggest rivals ever since the no rules game and if it bleeds we can kill it era. It is always so satisfying to beat them. Collingwood, yeah I suppose but every team always wants to beat them. Port as well in a way.
If a Gold Coast team stated up I would only see them as a rival when we played them and would barrack for them in every other instance.

I know Sydney haven't played Brisbane in a GF like Essendon and Collingwood have, but there's still been some rippers. I was at the prelim in Sydney (2003) where scores were leveled at 3QT. There was something like 68,000 spectators that night. Unbelievable!
Then there was that arsey win earlier in the year at the GABBA where Sydney did nothing but flood for 3 quarters, then the comeback.... I was sitting amongst a massive group of swans supporters giving them s*** all night. Boy, did they let me have it.... :p
I think games like those really make a rivalry. That's why I believe Sydney and Port Adelaide are the main rivals. I reckon the only reason we even consider Essendon and Collingwood as rivals is because we enjoy playing them so much. ;)
Speaking of Brisbane/Gold Coast, what do you guys think (particularly those in Brisbane) of the Lions playing a couple of games at Carrara this year?

I am going to all three.. 10 minute trip instead of 1 hour! Dunno who to support in the Melbourne - Adelaide game, probably the Crows. Thrilled to play away games there to be honest.

I'll be going to all of them, and so will most other "Lions supporters" I know. It really irks me with all the bandwagon chitchat that non-Qlders use to describe Lions supporters. Alot of us aren't just Lions supporters, but also are AFL/Aussie Rules supporters. The chance to go to a live AFL game no matter who is playing is a luxury and just can't be missed!

I'm the same, but I was born in Victoria, so that probably disqualifies me.
The problem is that Brisbane/SEQ gets pigeon-holed as a "northern state" - which in itself correlates to Sydney.
After living in both Sydney and SEQ, I can tell you there's a massive difference. However, people in Sydney just assume the situation is no different up North, because we're also a "rugby state". It's conclusion by association.....

I think there is a very nice Brisbane v Port rivalry developing
a couple of draw and the 1st game decided by 2 pts
Prelim finals
of couse the 2004 GF :D
both "enterred" in 1997 so I know I always see Brisbane as a bit of a yardstick
We also seem to be on a similar cycle, both up for the 1st half of this decade and now both struggling to stay up, or rebuild without becomming a disaster case.
