Hey all
I was just wondering what you thoughs were on 7 & 10 winning the rights - especially those who had to put up with coverage in Qld/NSW.
I for one am happy with the news cause A)No Eddie and B)7 do the AFL better IMHO
and the club seems wrapt.....

First and foremost, it'll allow Brisbane and Sydney to play on Friday nights. When you consider that:
a) These 2 teams have featured in the last 5 grand finals (winning 4 premierships).
b) They are 2 of the most entertaining teams going around (and both will make the 8).
c) They are the 2 most supported clubs in Australia.
... It'll be a HUGE step in the right direction for Aussie Rules and AFL in the northern states.
Secondly, we fans are likely to receive better coverage (especially in SEQ) over the course of the contract. Channel 10 showed repect to the Queensland public when they made every Saturday night game live and every finals match (including Friday nights) live. Now we'll see what channel 7 will do. If things work out, we could not only have live FNF, but also a double header on Sunday.
Plenty to look forward to...

I await the 7/10 structure before I get too excited but I must admit it sounds good.
Hopefully 7 will slip into the 9 time slots and we can get the second game on the Sunday and Friday night live or near live anyway.
Still would not be surprised if 7 did not show FNF until later, but I imagine that Foxtel would be given live rights in this instance.
Bring it on.
If you care for a Victorian perspective, right winner but wrong deal I would say. The original 7 - 10 offer was far more focused on the Northern states. With the raising of the stakes by Packer, there is less compulsion and room to move to give live FTA coverage up north.
The extra money will probably go into the salary cap. Fringe players who have their lives thrown around by almost being good enough may need better looking after but those capable of playing 100 games are getting paid enough now.
The less money better coverage of the original 7 - 10 deal was the best option.

point taken but we will show the same care factor as MOST victorians have of Qld/NSW......

I think in the end it won't be too different in 2007 compared to 2006. The interesting thing will be what happens with FNF in Queensland, in terms of a) timeslots on Seven and Foxtel, b) which pay-tv provider partners Seven and Ten (Foxtel/Fox Footy or ESPN or Fox Sports or...?), and c) whether the Lions get a few Friday night matches next year to help drive pay tv subscriptions in Queensland.
Good riddance to you Eddie!!!!!!!!.

Not to mention not having to put up with the tiresome Collingwood propaganda and non-stop whining and whinging about anything to do with the Lions being successful.
Long live 7 and 10.

I don't mean to sound selfish, but Gold Coast are getting a 8:30 start. :)
Brisbane may have a 10:30 start to begin with (except for Lions games, which will be 8:30), but over time they may be moved to an earlier time slot depending on ratings.

Andrew Demitriou was interviewd on both 5AA and 3AW and on both occasions he said that QLD/NSW will get live friday and sat nights and all games will be shown into those areas by 7 & 10.
Clynton Dribus(sp?) felt that because 7 & 10 wouldnt want to go head to head with games, they might have to offsell some games to fox

Might? It's almost a certainty that they'll sell 3 games to Foxtel.

If Foxtel buy them.
If Foxtel buy them.
If they don't, they may as well close down Foxfooty Channel.....can't see them surviving solely on Grumpy Old Men, Celebrity Love Match and all those other boring fillers.
A Footy Channel with no live footy.....I don't think so.
Still, 7 and Fox aren't exactly best buddies ever since 7 has been triyng to sue the living suitcase out of them for years on end.....and anyone else 7 reckons was to blame for them losing the rights back at the end of 2001.
It'll be interesting to see how this pans out and who thinks who has the whip hand......and who is willing to use it.

The AFL might have the whip in hand.....AD said Fri/Sat night games will be live and all games showen into QLD/NSW - im sure its a ploy to pressure 7/10/Fox to do so.
They have talked the talk - now lets see them walk the walk

Nah, nine had a "best endeavours" clause to cover all that. The best deal for live or near live FTA coverage was the lesser money one that 7 and 10 originally put.
Thanks to nine, the "whip hand" means little in the matching deal from what I can see this time around.
The only whip hand is the no last right of refusal for next time. It does put 7 and 10 on notice to certain extent during the 2007 - 2011 period.

Wonder if they'll sell off the rights as last bidders again? Seems to have worked in inflating the price this time.

Sorry, didn't realize before that I was still posting on the Brisbane board but that's the point that AD has been making. They will not sell off the last rghts again. He is quite emphatic about this. All you can read into it is he felt restricted in some way this time around.

Fox footy can only show any matches from the archive as it bought the rights to do so, right? What happens now? Is there a pay TV section of the rights to show archive footage that the AFL owns?

Although Eddie wont go down without a whimper. We will hear all the smart quips, and sarcastic remarks aimed at 7 & 10 all year guaranteed. I can hear him now "Oh.. enjoy it while you can, you wont have this coverage next year" Etc..Etc.

IF all the IF's pan out it wil be a good thing. Especially for Friday night games. Since Seven lost the rights the game in QLD has grown more and more and the ratings have gone up and up. Hopefully this will give enough of an impetus for them to show all Friday night games live or on a slight delay up against the Thugby.
If chanel ten stick with their Saturday night live games and between them all Lions interstate games live and home games NOT against the gate but on a 2 hour delay or something we should be SWEET here in Qld.
Again it is all if if if.
But but jumping and doing happy dance that not long to go till we don't have to listen to mcchins or dopey dermott.
If seven go back to showing live FNF on paytv like they had with C7 sports, well that would be a step up from what we've got now. And no Eddie on FNF! Woohoo!

Unless they sell it to Foxtel and Eddie calls it there... Unlikely, but possible.

Even if we don't get FNF at an earlier time (which we will), at least Brisbane and Sydney can be included in the Friday matches. That's a huge win that shouldn't be taken for granted. :thumbsu:
That alone will do wonders for promoting the game up north.
