A nerw stadium is the obvious choice, but $700 million and 5 years means Subi is what we will have to put up with

Trying to squeeze more sardines into Subi is just asking for trouble...
60,000 if not bigger.
Its not like it won't get filled every single AFL week.

Every second week... the Dockers wont fill it. :D

Still can't believe the lack of foresight when they decided on the previous ground redevelopment at Subi which included reducing the capacity of the ground to fit in more corporate boxes :(
You would to have think that considering that the economy and land prices are booming. Now is the time for the various parties to stop pussy footing around and build a stadium that will suit the purposes of the state for the next 30 years

I dare say even the Dockers will fill the stadium in the near future and it won't be hard for them either.
As it currently stands if you havent got a membership but you want to start going to the footy on a regular basis the only choice is to start buying tacky purple clothing and join the other mob unless you want to wait a couple of years for a seat to become avialable
thats a very good point that you make..a lot of young kids arent able to go and watch the footy which is a part of your childhood! the ground capacity needs to increase significantly!!

I'm just curious as to if we get a new stadium, where we'd put it, seeing as already it takes my family, what 45 mins to get Subiaco which is fine, I'm just wondering where it would be?
Kalgoorlie would be nice. :p

Freo should stay at their own ground. We should build our own ground for like 80,000 or 90,000 capacity. We should also have that light thing like Bayern Munich has in their stadium where the whole stadium on the outside is lit up in yellow and blue.
Subiaco Oval was Freos home ground and The WACA was Ours.. :D Stolen

Do you people honestly believe West Coast or Freo could fill a 60,000 capacity stadium every week? Because I doubt it. We might see an increase in attendance to the mid-40k's, but I doubt you'd sell out more than a handful of times a year.
Is it really worth forking out $700m (seems a bit high, but I'll assume Larrikin is right) to increase attendances by such a small amount?

You should be in Politics with the rest of dunces that run this state, that is the typical backward thinking and lack of foresight that has resulted in the situation that we have today.
It's called planning for the future and the sooner they bite the bullet and start doing it the better. As for the $700m, a mere drop in the bucket given the way they are ripping off the taxpayers of this State.

Interesting theory. Not quite sure where it comes from though.

Its not about filling it every week. Even if you can get 45-50k there each week and still be profitable then thats OK. You need the extra capacity for finals, derbies, and a couple of other games each year. A stadium doesnt need to be full each game. Take a look around the country and you'll see we're probably the only team that consistently fills its stadium on a weekly basis. We need to be in a situation like Adelaide are at Football Park, where they dont fill the stadium, but have that capacity spare for the big games. The fact that people know they can walk up and buy a ticket on the day to an Eagles game again for most games of the year would see our numbers increase too. And whats the membership queue at now? A few thousand? That would see at least the 45-50k there weekly, without the walk-ups.

Second that opinion.
Eagles had somewhere around 41,000 members last year + 2,000 on the waiting list, and how many more (like me) could not be bothered putting their name on a waiting list because they're going to get a crabby seat or no seat at all?
Then you look at WCE home games, the interstate team's supporters have no chance of getting a ticket.
A 50,000 seat stadium would be sold out for WCE as well.
Packed staduim of 70,000 would be no problem for WCE v Dockers and Finals.
60,000 + for the blockbusters like WCE v Essendon or Collingwood.
Around the 45,000 - 55,000 for the Cellar Dwellars WCE v Hawks.
Heck, even the Fockers will sell out Subiaco (in memberships) currently, if they have a good finals campaign.
Edit: The past work on Subi and the proposal for future work is just patch-work at best, ala trying to plug holes in the Titanic.
60,000 is needed minimum, with an easy avenue to increase it to 70,000 some years down the track when needed.

But the question I was asking is is it worth spending $700m?
And what do you do with such an expensive new stadium in the off-season?
Its all about money. A $700m investment for a stadium that would host 22 games a year (plus finals) with a slightly higher average attendance than Subiaco, simply cannot be justified.
I reckon the mark will be unlikely to exceed $500million.
Telstra Dome cost $480m and the MCG upgrade cost $600m.
An open seat satdium on a green field site of about 70k would be around $400-500m in Perth.
MCG cost so much as they needed to keep capacity as high as possible and build it with the old plans in mind and unions held them to randsom as there was a dealine. eg comm games.
I always hear that Belmont race track is a suitable site. Train station could build great Bus stops with easy access to a freeway.

What are you basing $500m on - Colonial Stadium was built (and paid for) 7-10 years ago at $480 - and we are now in a worker's market.
The figures I'm pulling are based on the (unspellable) Report, and it's actually closer to $800 million that 700.
Would love to see it happen, don't get me wrong, but in a state where an ambulance driving past the front door of Swan Health Campus makes front page news (even when that is the prortocol), it won't happen

With all the talk on Stadiums on 6pr by George Grizzle Guts and Co.... got me thinking.....
If a new stadium was built....
Would it be built at the same dimensions as Subi - hence giving WCE a clear advantage in home games by running teams off their feet.
Or would it be the dimensions of the MCG - no real home advantage but then we have the same game plan whether its home or away.
Thoughts?

That is a very interesting point. Although by the time it was built much of the midfield and gameplan may have changed.

If the Eagles get a new venue, I reckon it should be called 'Sour Grapes' stadium :)

Should build for the future, not just for present requirements.
It would be far cheaper to build something from scratch than it is to modify an existing building. Adding onto Subi would be expensive.
I think they should build an 80-100k stadium. While you may not fill it in the short-term it would be a worthwhile project as the population of Perth and WA in general is increasing at a fast rate and as the years go by it will be harder and harder for supporters of football to see their teams play.
If the new stadium is also built to play cricket and other sports and events like concerts, etc then the cost can be absorbed over more programs other than just football.
MCG and TD hold a lot of events outside of football and during the football season have a lot of games played there in a given year. Thus, there is a higher burden on such capital expenditure in Perth as there would be far fewer games played there. But, I still think it would be worthwhile. The lost income over 20-50 years from a smaller capacity would be significant.
