A work colleague of mine was tellin me how he recently went to a seminar thing which was about science in sport

Anyway main topic of conversation was the new inniative by West Coast to use technology similiar to what is used to improve cricketers bowlin action to improve there kicking. Pretty much they kick a ball and the computer tells them what they are doing wrong and they will keep workin on it till they get it right. It seems Michael Braun Beau Waters and Beau Wilkes have been the test dummies and apparantly there kicking is improving out of sight (surprised Braun could kick myself but meh). Eagles are pumping in something like 3.5 million over 4 years into the so called project, the overall hope is that all players on our list will end up being able to kick as good on there opposite as they do on there normal foot and will be able to take shots for goal at around 80% accuracy.

Quite a handy advantage, its coming to fruition as seen on the news with Jonny Wilkinson kicking coach coming in, NFL kicking coaches and even soccer coaches will also come in and help the boys over the next year or two. The thing is where the only team with a) the money to do this and b) the technology close by (Im guessin its at UWA) so were the only team doing this type of thing

Gonna be amazing apparantly as they expect that by 2008 all players will be two footed and kickin very straight. Interesting I thought, shows you how all this extra money we have can be used to give us a advantage over the competition.

crazy

if you can get the forwards taking marks and kicking like brad smith then we will only need about 20 forward entries per game when we already get like 60+

and beau wilkes would have to be one of dodgiest kicks going around

On this theme, my uncle was telling me how Eagles expect to make something like 8 million in profit next year, we can afford stuff like this.

Correct me if im wrong but arnt we also funding like a 1 million dollar thing into preventing soft tissue injuries ie. hamstrings...

That's pretty interesting, I love the fact that we're not sitting around and replying on the AFL cycle to win premierships but are going out of our way to implement a system which will keep us at the top for a long while.

I like the skills check list thing we came up with a few months ago.

True, it sounds like were trying to do some new things like Brisbane did during there great run, imagine Wirra kicking it as good on his left as he does on his right, thatd be nuts.

I played soccer as a kid and I'm sure it's the same for most who played ball sports and that is the coaches and the emphasis they placed on being able to kick with both feet. I shudder when I see AFL players who are getting paid hundreds of thousands per year and they can only kick with one foot. Very limiting and very easy for opposition sides to shut down.

That said, if we can put some science behind what we're doing and improve anything it's got to be good news.

I thought Murray Cooper appointed as a kicking coach last year to solve the set shot shooting problem.

As he didn't seem to have much impact last season it appears there looking at a high tech solution instead

That's odd.

I would have thought they'd be working on getting worse.
