2006 Captain (Cats Board) (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=219254)

Mark Thompson on SEN this morning said that Geelong have not yet announced their captain for the 2006 season. He said that the leadership group of 7 had been announced and that those 7 players will go away for a leadership camp and will discuss who will be captain and vice captain for 2006.

Does this sound familiar at all ?

But apparently their leadership group is better than our leadership group, just ask Chapman.

Neitz stays at helm; Cats turn to youth (http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/realfooty/articles/2006/01/27/1138319448321.html)

Geelong coach Mark Thompson believes the Cats' new leadership structure should enable the club to claim the flag "very, very soon".

Yesterday, Matthew Scarlett, Cameron Ling and Tom Harley were announced as vice-captains for the 2006 season, following confirmation that Steven King once again will captain the Cats.

Injuries to key players last year put the leadership roles of senior players under repeated pressure, prompting a new-look leadership formation at the club.

"We want a team full of leaders, and we are serious about trying to establish as many leaders as we possibly can . . . at some stage this year, they'll captain the club" Thompson said of the vice-captains.

Again familiar???

Melbourne takes lead with youth (http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,17960820%255E20322,00.html)

YOUTH was the word when Melbourne revealed its five-man leadership group for 2006 yesterday. In trimming the group from nine in 2005, the Demons declared their hand in search of David Neitz's successor.

...and this one Storm goes for rotation (http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,17926658-23214,00.html)

Storm coach Craig Bellamy has recognised the need to develop a new leadership group.

"We have a very young group here and thought it would be good to spread the leadership a bit wider than just one person," Bellamy said.

What disappoints me is that they credit the initiative to "MELBOURNE Storm is set to follow the lead of AFL premier Sydney and rotate its captaincy in 2006."

Aaaaarrrrgh

After this article was published; Saints set out to right a few thongs (http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/realfooty/articles/2006/02/07/1139074228203.html) by Stephen Rielly, Albury-Wodonga (February 8, 2006)

THE ceaseless search for a winning edge in football has, at times, been a peculiar one but until now it is doubtful that it has ever involved one of the icons of Australian beach culture — the thong.

St Kilda coach Grant Thomas, or at least his fitness and conditioning coach Craig Starcevich, has decided that, as a part of a serious commitment to training detail, Saints players will no longer be allowed to wear thongs...

... As it happens, the thong edict is only one of a series of minor deprivations imposed on the players, who, for instance, are no longer allowed to play indoor cricket or soccer in their Moorabbin changerooms and are forbidden to consider any athletic activity without first having their ankles strapped.

Now this:

No cricket for Power players (http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,18127830%255E19742,00.html)

Fear of injuries has driven the Power to follow St Kilda's lead and crack down on their players' off-field activities.

Midfielder Stuart Dew and big man Brendon Lade have been told to quit the Kersbrook Cricket Club, where they have been playing during summer.

"They are allowed to play cricket before Christmas, but after that they are told no," head fitness coach Darren Burgess said. "We try to avoid having them play cricket or other activities like a social touch game or soccer game.

Funny... when it comes to such topics all the supporters of other teams disappear... as if they've seen a ghost.

love this one!!!!

As reported by the Geelong Advertiser, Geelong has created a position within its support department to better manage players’ injuries.

The move comes after a disastrous year for injuries in 2005 and criticism over the Cats’ player-injury management.

Yesterday the club appointed Steve Hocking as training services manager to help prevent the recurrence of any further injury nightmares.

Hocking played 199 games for Geelong as a defender, and was already the chairman of selectors but has had his position increased to full-time.

He is understood to have taken over some duties from football manager Garry Davidson, to now be the man looking after the co-ordination of all medical, physiotherapy and fitness requirements on training and match days.

What about this?

Chapman's change of fortune (http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=260764)

Snip

He has rarely missed a game since but one of those rare absences was in last year's heartbreaking semi-final loss to Sydney when he was out with a hamstring injury.

Chapman watched on helplessly as the Cats threw away a four-goal lead to the eventual premiers as Nick Davis kicked the winning goal with just seconds remaining.

While Chapman admitted to wondering "what if" after the game, he denied any thoughts of extra motivation ahead of Saturday night's clash with the Swans at Telstra Stadium.

"There is not much we can about it (the semi-final loss) now," he said.

"If we could change the past we would, but we are just worried about this week's game now."

"Obviously in that last quarter last year their maturity probably beat ours in the way they turned the game in their favour, but this year we are getting better at that - learning to change games on the ground rather than waiting for it to come from the coaches' box."

Didn't I hear that somewhere else, a while back?

Hmm. Methinks that Thompson has borrowed considerably from the Thomas school of coaching.
