It's too hard to pick who'll make it at the moment, but from the results Elsternwick should be rated no. 2 at present. They've now beaten Bentleigh twice and haven't disgraced themselves all year.

I have to agree with Bigw, Elsternwick seem to able to play a simular game to South and CAN play a big ground. They tested South on "Sportscover" on a cold night in June. I reckon they are the ONLY threat to Bloods. OW and WB are only making up the numbers, unless they find 2-3 hard nuts that can carry the ball. South seem to have the answers for C. Sharp, but 100 goals in 16 games can't be denied. South's backline is SICK, with plenty to come up if need be. Who was it who said backlines win premierships?, Roos, Pagan or Sheedy.Regardless who wins this year D2 should watch out. The promoted teams will be more than ready. My tip is South over Elsternwick by 3 goals in the Granny. Sorry Sharpy.

It was like Flinders St station down there in the forward line. UHS did the same thing the week before.

it really does amaze me why westbourne would ever play 2-3 loose in defence.... from watching the OW lads didnt have much direction.... they also did look to have a large number of prime players out, smith, lever, as did souths captain south i believe...

OW from my experience watching, well this year especially, seem to become very defencive and struggle with this to kick goals... why they play people loose they must not have the fitness to run and create opportunities up front....

very very disappointing effort i thought from OW, and would expect these boys to be very quiet due to this....

Elsternwick did beat Bentleigh at their ground on the weekend, which is a touch larger than their quarter acre paddock.
I can't see OW beating Bentleigh in round 18 - esp considering the Dimmas et al will be playing for a second chance.

WB play the Western Oval well, it's going to be damp underfoot, South have got finals to think about, and it's a season-on-the-line cliche for the home side.....
But I can't see South losing on current form.
From what I've heard, South would prefer to have OW in the finals mixrather than West Brunswick, despite their only loss coming out at Truganinia.

was anyone at the WB v SM game? what happenned? Some different faces in the SM side. Rumour has it they were blokes that missed getting a game in the twos. Not too much to play for for SM and WB were very good. Think the SM boys were happy to lose to a decent bunch of blokes at WB when it means a certain other side misses out on finals action. That side apparently does not need umpires to report opposition players, it lodges its own reports. They have a name for that type of thing, especially when the SM player in question was retalliating after being knocked out by an OW blow. Enjoy that footy trip.

I think your punctuation has summed up the OldWestbourne season, Tigers:

"..."

The Saints were soundly beaten, don't worry about that, but OW were far from impressive.
My prediction - Bentleigh to secure 2nd with a solid win over OW. WB to win against a surprisingly motivated Saints, and OW to hit the grey sands of Altona Beach on August 27th for their early footy trip on the coast.

South Melb won't have to worry about WB, they won't cross paths again until 2008 - SM to win first week of finals, and Bentleigh will beat either WB or Elsternwick in week 2. Either way, SM and Bent are my tips for the grand final.

Anyone else got any meaningful thoughts?

Well I will be bold enough to make some predictions. Where they'll finish

1/Sth.Melb districts- Showed plenty last year, young list, very dangerous.
2/Bentleigh- winning 5 or 6 in D2 says have ability, hard to beat at home
3/Old West-Did well playing finals 1st up, young running side with quality
4/Elswk- Good individuals carry them. Mentally? will be how they fair.
5/Kew- Bringing in youth with good senior players there abouts.
6/W.Brunnie-Tipping a slide, ageing list, and "rumor"-lost key players.
7/Gryphons-Hard to judge Uni sides- Can play and will surprise ocasionally
8/UHS-VU-Would need to recruit really well to trouble the top.
9/St.Mary's-Can't see them stepping up to the faster running game, although will win a few on there dung heap.
10/ Swinburne-predicting a straight sets slide.

All the best for the upcoming season.

Teens charged over burglaries

August 22, 2006 10:23am

TWO teenage boys have been arrested over burglaries at three sports pavilions at Melbourne's Albert Park which caused $50,000 worth of damage.

The youths, aged 15 and 16, will appear in a children's court today charged with burglary, theft and criminal damage at the David Mandie, Cox McKenzie and Middle Park bowls club pavilions in Albert Park.

The incidents occurred some time before 3am (AEST) today, police said.

Irreplaceable sports memorabilia and building fittings were destroyed in the attacks.

He also mentioned that while they caught two of them, but they reckon there were another two at large, so the pain may not be over yet.

As for the crap being spun on here about Westbourne. If they do miss out (as I have predicted in my article this week), the guff being spun about them underachieving or being relegated for 2008 is just that, guff. No one who knows anything about the lower grades of the VAFA would pay any credence to the crap that is spun on this board sometimes. Just ignore it boys and we can perhaps get some semi-intelligent banter on here. Whoever misses from both Westies is going to be very, very unlucky. In any event, both will be hard pressed to challenge the top three though.

On this, I believe that this thread used to be interesting and insightful to read, but recently bozos like Reilly have turned it into a farce. I could even put up with McGlede's comments previously because he was at least informed. Let's try and keep it interesting through the finals with some good banter.

Finally, I just wanted to toot my own trumpet a bit on my predictions for the ladder in my Round One article. They were 1. Bentleigh, 2. OW, 3. South 4. Elsternwick, 5. Kew, 6. West Brunswick, 7. Monash, 8. UHS, 9. Saints, 10. Swinburne.

As such the only one I was way off on was Swinburne. I was a bit harsh on them early due to no contact from the club and rumours I had heard on the grapevine (which proved to be slightly ill informed).

Any ideas for team of the year guys? Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

You make a good point regarding the quality of the forum, Gav, but I believe a lot of the crap cast in the OW direction is mainly due to earlier posts from supposed OW supporters.

I also wouldn't be too quick to declare this league a three horse race. Any of the five sides in finals contention can get a win on their day. OW and WB beat Souths and one of them will miss finals. Hardly inspires absolute confidence in Souths as an all-conquering omnipotent force!

As such the only one I was way off on was Swinburne. I was a bit harsh on them early due to no contact from the club and rumours I had heard on the grapevine (which proved to be slightly ill informed).

Any ideas for team of the year guys? Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Why would you even give a rats ass about other peoples opinion of team of the year? Pretty much the 22 players you select anyway will be from OW. Only reason why alot of people have got on this forum and started giving it to the OW fellas is because the rubbish they talk about themselves. But i am glad to see most of it has stopped now due to fact that OW will need a miracle to make the finals. My aunty is a travel agent, she could probably get you guys some good deals at such short notice on some early footy trip specials. Let me know if you need a hand thanks fellas!

If OW needed a hand, it wouldn't be from you - your hand must be very tired from the vigorous rubbing, and who knows what they'd catch from it.

PS Apologies for the lack of football content. My sympathy is with SM, hope the rooms can be brought good by finals time.

The early footy trip call was mildly amusing on about page 48. Try finding some new material you tool.

Just spoke to the treasurer from Collegians whom I work with, and he confirmed that some serious damage had been done. Their clubrooms were apparently next on the list according to police.

Gavone,

As you will know I had OW pegged as my Premiership team this season. my only concern was the hype you were giving them in the AF.

Unless there is 80% turnover in the club next season, I would gladly put the Warriors up there in my tips for 2007 promotion. Any talk of OW getting relegated is posted just to get the blood boiling about Hoppers way.

Lets see those saying it put their money where their mouth is if they are going to say that.

Wouldnt you love to know who i play for!! only thing is im not stupid like you boys at OW. I really do hope all this rubbish all you lads talk on the forum comes back to bite you on the bottom!! and you miss out on the finals. And i can assure you mate we havent copped many hidings from you in recent times.

I must say many of the OW boys have gone veryyyyyyy veryyy quiet also...its extremely amusing actually!!

Pat Bateman put it to you reilly - who do you play for?

Most people on this forum want to talk mostly constructive banter on D3 related topics whereas you just want to bag Old Westbourne. Stop hiding behind your user name and the shame of playing for a club you don't want to own up to.

Considering Vineyard plays for Darley in the Ballarat League, maybe you can come up with another comeback...

And your obviously still embarrased to name your side. Or is it that the club you play for would be embarrassed to associate with you???

Posting again late Reilly, you really need to get a life or out more.

All is set for an intriguing weekend of footy in one of the more unusual seasons. One of the westies will unfortunately be out of the race and off to mad monday early with 13 wins under their belt.

In the finals decider my tip is with the home side (Bentl) playing for the double chance and having seen them in full flight a couple of times this year it will be OW being the very unlucky ones. No OW bashing meant unlike others on the forum and it will be disappointing for the club to be in a sense one step back from their finals appearance last year. But it is a weird D3 this year and I agree the standard is much higher than the previous.

A lot of faith out in the western suburbs and the boys are really getting around each other for this massive clash. Predicting the Warriors to get home and then challenge finals time. The surprise packets. Nothing works better than confidence.

Does it really matter who he is? Only itap & gavone have really identified themselves in any meaningful way.

Some suggestions for team of the year from a South perspective.

Dean Bell (SM), a moral for FB. Should win clubs BF. A stroke of genius converting the firery forward to the comps best defender.

Sam Atherton (SM) a regular in the comps tightest defence, rucked superbly in Kiwis' absence and moves around the ground with ease.

Jack Cronen for FP, the comps most dangerous small forward. Anything Billy drops, Jack slots through the big sticks. Can take huge screamers when feeling frisky.

Can't have Jack without Billy McGee, I'd play him in the other pocket with Chris Sharp (Bent) at FF.

For on-ball, utility types take your pick from Cheevers, Washington, Madden, Aqualina, Kohnesheen.

Stiff to miss through injury or abscence, Moojen, Hannan, Mahoney

funny how you now seem to be fishing....

keep biting yourself you clown, there wouldnt be one person on here who asppreciates any comment you have made....

i think we should all just ignore this clown and get back onto discussing the footy topic! This forum has turned s h i t due to this clown and one week out we should be talking about the exciting round about to come....

My tips, bentleigh (if P.Dimma is playing) as everyone in the league knows, they play 10 foot taller when they run out with him....

if OW to make finals, i would be very wary.....

SM, they key to south melbourne is shutting down those two little forwards, which has been seen with tight checking they are easily rattled, Jack and Sab (i think??), also they rate themselves on being physically hard and try to rattle teams, if teams can focus on hitting them hard and play with great team spirit, can be beaten...

Elsterwick are very dangerous with some great quality players, if there second teer players can step up... watch out...

WB, i think like OW if they can get there heads right, which most teams do finals time, will be extremely dangerous...

Bentleigh, great at stoppages and with sharp to straighten them up, very dangerous.... winning stoppages and across half back, are weaknesses....

OW & WB whoever makes it i would say would be my tips, with both teams loosing games i believe mentally, are very big chances....

This is my opinion, and i wish all teams the best, and congradulate all involved in a great season and a great standard of D3 this year....

Here is an interesting statistic that all in this forum would be interested in;

In all grades barring D4, 13 wins would place you easily in 2nd position (and in D4 you would be 4 games clear in the 4), however, should OW win on the weekend and WB presumably win at "the Stamp", that is how many wins WB will have and miss the finals with. Unbelievable!

It certainly has been the most unusual season with regards to the gap between the top and bottom five that I can remember.

My tip for the weekend is Benteigh btw but I heard on the grapevine P.Dimma will not be playing which may assist the visitors. In any event, the finals are a week early in D3, and I am looking forward to getting out there and watching what will be an intruiging battle, no matter the result.

Was he feeling exceptionally frisky Vs WB? There's been a lot of hype about a screamer taken in the second quarter.

Hang time of 10 seconds, well maybe not, but even better than the hanger at Swinburne earlier in the year on his way to 7 goals and the Club Warehouse Rising Star award for that round.

The case against Billy was withdrawn before being heard Hunter. We didn't find out till arriving at Elsternwick but enjoyed a nice evening drive anyway. Billy's record still clean after almost 15 seasons of ammo football.

As Editor of the South Melbourne Districts website I have been privy to some interesting emails in regards to the mindless destruction of our clubrooms. While everyone was devastated by the damage, the amount of concern and sympathy for South Melbourne and Ajax has been heart warming. Stories of complete strangers offering assistance throughout the bayside area have confirmed that our club is a well respected and well loved part of the community.

The level of community support is astounding, including that of rival football clubs, none more so than that of the West Brunswick Amateur Footy Club. The West Brunswick offer to share their facilities is an amazingly sporting gesture, from a club that could still possibly play against us in September action. From all at South we thank West Brunswick for your generous offer.

Fortunately our “football” department has been left in tacked, and while we have felt a massive kick in the guts our ability to train and play has only been mildly interrupted and no doubt will make our playing group and member’s more determined to succeed.

Once again, a sincere thank you to Angus Hamilton and the West Brunswick AFC and all our friends in the community.

Go Bloods!

Please keep your eye on our website as important announcements in regards to finals and repairs fundraising will be posted ASAP.

This article has been pulled straight from www.sportal.smdsc.com.au as a thank you to WB and as an example of what really makes local footy great.
Personally i hope you make the big dance at WB, very sporting.:thumbsu:

My team of the year. Tough ask when you only see each team twice a year. I know I've been biased but it's hard not to be when they're the blokes you're playing with each Saturday.

There were a lot of players who could have got a game but have not been on the park enough this year to make it, eg Nick Smith OW, Dimmatina's Bent.

Before you open up and give it to me with both barrels, have a go at doing it yourself and there is even a chance of some intelligent debate on a thread that has been going downhill quickly of late.
