Eight new Redan players actually.
Three former North Ballarat players at Redan with Julian Field the best known, Shane Snibson who coached Beulah last year and Jake Bridges who is back from Wangaratta in the O & M. Jarrett Giampaolo and Tom McKinnon are new from Horsham Saints in the Wimmera FL. Matthew Pitt is from St Albans in Geelong, Andrew Blackwood from Bendigo according to the paper and Brett Dickinson, ex-Numurkah.

The Bloods have Shaun Stanley from Parkside, Aaron Wheelhouse from Lancefield and Saul Grenfell from Keilor Park.
There is an M.Turner listed as new is the paper but no details about where he is from and he isn't in the clearances list. Wheelhouse is only an emergency and is named at CHB in the twos.

Shane Snibson, one of the most over rated and over paid country footballers going around. Milked Beulah for all they were worth, playing bugger all games. Missed half a dozen games leading up to the grand final and then brought himself into the team, replacing a 17 year old kid who worked his arse off to be in the team. what a bloke.....

Absolutely kidding yourself DOCKERS. Snibbo may be a little bit past his best and battling OP but has been a great player at VFL level and to say over rated and over paid is a lack of respect. Better bloke than you ever will.

Brendon Peace from Redan.

A lot of blokes are going to win the henderson by the sounds of things 1 round into the season. Craig berger from melton has had two 30+ possession games with a couple of goals. Loves the umpires as well. Still 17 rounds to go though boys & girls.

It looks like it will be a tight race between Sunbury, East Point, Darley and Melton this year. Dont think Redan & South are quite there yet?

Ballarat, Sebas, The Marsh, Lakers could be the bottom sides.

The interleague rule may have claimed a couple of early victims as well. Double standards is a word being bandied around also.

dj is exactly what east point needed after the departure of greg seiz last year
shane fisher should still be a great target up foward but dan jordan has CHF written all over him

averges about 15 marks a game over the preseason and should be one to look for. many that have seen him play say he allready has the hendo in the bag

works very well in tandem with last years henderson medalist and brother ben

I see that DJ kicked four goals on the weekend. Can anyone tell me how he played otherwsie?

im not condoning what took place at the selection table on the thursday night before the grand final at beulah, im just of the opinion that young footballers should show some respect for footballers who have played at high level. i am getting a kick for ultima mate, infact i believe i got two or three on the weekend a handball or two

Get on Kingy from darley if your after under 18.5's. Playing good footy at Darley in the firsts. Played real well in his debut against Sunbury on some big names. Absolute work horse as well as on the track with talent to burn.

The interleague is looking pretty strong. All the big names have been training and has a good vibe to it. Looks like the boys are keen to win a game and committ to the league. Peter Newman has been great so far in his coaching role and earns respect when he talks. Likely starters in the side will be field, edwards, both jordans, half of sunbury, porter, vimpany and edwards from melton, Aussie larsen from BM, Magill, McCabe, Cape, Reynolds and McLeod from Darley and a few others. No real superstars compared to other leagues but the spirit of the team will determine how they go.

Some good names in there which will certainly help Ballarat's chances. I would have thought there are a few notable omissions so far. Where is Connors from the Marsh??

i think there are a number of guys to look out for in the 18.5's this year sunbury has there usual star studded line up with the pocket rocket dylan wirhgt who was last years grand final B.O.G. lining up for the lions again, and mitch brewer, bryden ross, also for melton south jeremy krojs and glenn ryan for the bloods but out of these it would be little wrighty for the lions who is little quick and doesnt miss if given the ball in front of goal. Surgey put him in the 1's mate no need for him in the 3rds just wasting his talent he's gotta learn someday what 1's footy is about. see if he can handle it with the big boys. hes my favorite in the 18's league ill back him all the way go little fella

Redan 18.19.127 D Lake Wendouree 8.10.58
Ballarat 26.22.178 D Bacchus Marsh 6.9.45
Melton 19.7.121 D Sunbury 10.16.76
Darley 26.9.165 D Melton South 8.10.58
East Point 13.16.94 D Sebastopol 5.8.38

Solid win by Redan to show that they will still be competitive.

Ballarat were to fast, quick and skillful for a poor bacchus marsh. I dont think they will win a game soon. Maybe against South, lakers or sebas are their best chance.

Could their be a changing of the guard - Sunbury have again failed against quality opposition and are now two games back from teh top teams. Melton are all class and the team to beat.

Darley thumped a very poor Melton south who lacked direction and were constantly beaten for the hard ball.

And east point continued on their merry way against a valiant but undermanned sebas, who again wont win many games this year like the marsh.

From all reports he was very good on sat in their win against last years victors GVFL and a sustained an injury sat night which was a kick to the shin (cant't clarify whether it was a stray Heel kick on the dancefloor late sat night or not) but i'm pretty sure it was during their Sat night game against West Gippsland Latrobe.

Came off 15 minutes into the final on sunday due to his shin injury, but was courageous just to even get out there. There's just no stopping the 'Big Red Express' ;)

DIVISION ONE COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP CARNIVAL - BFL throws away 7-goal lead
Monday, 15 May 2006

BALLARAT Football League yesterday let slip a golden opportunity to claim its first VCFL Division One Country Championship title in two decades.
The BFL threw away a seven-goal lead to lose the deciding match to Ovens Murray at Albury.

Ovens and Murray booted eight unanswered goals to take the crown as country Victoria's premier league, winning 8.11 (59) to 7.8 (50) in front of a home crowd at Lavington Sports Complex.

BFL coach Peter Freeman was in shock and could hardy find the words to describe how he felt at the game's end.

His team looked certain to break a 20-year drought and secure Ballarat's first division one title since 1986.

With East Point's Dan Jordan dominating at centre half-forward, Ballarat had a seemingly unassailable 45-point lead with the game's opening seven goals.

Injuries to key players proved costly and allowed Ovens and Murray to finish full of running in the shortened match.

The free-flowing style of play Ballarat had displayed in its games broke down without star players Ryan Waight, Matthew Cape, Jason Watkins, Kade Nicholls, Chris McGill, Cameron McCabe and Shane Snibson.

All played major roles in leading Ballarat to comfortable wins over reigning division one premier Goulburn Valley and West Gippsland-Latrobe in the round robin competition on Saturday.

A hamstring strain forced Redan's Waight, a key play-maker through the midfield, to sit out the second half.

Ballarat lost its drive from defence when Darley's Cape (calf) and Melton South's Watkins (shoulder) left the field.

And this came on top of losing East Point's Nicholls (Achilles tendon), Redan's Snibson (soreness) and Darley pair McGill and McCabe (soreness) - all of whom failed to recover from Saturday's games.

"We lost our leg speed and Ovens and Murray took advantage of that," Freeman said.

"There is an element of disappointment there but you can't but be proud and elated in some way at what we have achieved."

Ballarat had been keen to win the championship and bury the bitterness of last year's winless campaign at Geelong.

Jordan was strong on the lead and with his hands as he brought up his fourth goal 15 minutes into the final, the games were of 25-minute halves.

Ballarat's forwards were given an endless supply of ball as Matt Dwyer, Shane Hutchinson, Nathan Blomeley and Ben Jordan controlled possession in the middle.

Ovens and Murray booted five goals in quick succession late in the opening half, giving it the momentum at the break.

Ovens and Murray's running types lifted their tempo and helped their side take the lead.

Ballarat had its chances to claw in front and send the match into what would have been a nail-biting climax, but wayward kicking in attack gave Ovens and Murray glory.

Lake Wendouree's Paul McMahon and Sunbury's Jamie Lobb messed up simple shots for goal, kicking four behinds between them, as Ballarat surged in a last-ditch effort to steal victory.

Melton key forward Brendan Porter was named Ballarat's best player for the carnival.

Thats good that Ballarat FL was close to winning the championships, but obviously a pretty ordinary result.

I know Capey was the rock who the Williamstown Reserves built two premierships around. Im sure he'll be the same for Darley this year. And Im sure as soon as the Big Red Nut went down in the final, that was one of the major turning points of the game.

Was porter lucky to get the medal? I'm not saying he didn't play well because i didn't see the games but i just noticed he only appeared in the best once. Little was named in the best in all three games and last years medalist Larsen was also in there a couple of times.

Is it something that gets a lot of though over the carnival or they just make a decision at the end?

His name is Brent O'Grady form Pascoe Vale in the EDFL B Grade Comp. Did not ever look like playing in the ones at Pacco but did play in the 2's in the ruck. Not overly tall, bout 6 foot, and does not have good skills. Ruck is about the only possie he can play. very strong body though and very fit ( He's a copper) will run all day.

I think he battles ok but doesnt star. Ruckman are hard to find so any contribution is worthwhile. Plus they are an undermanned side.

Big clashes between Melton & east Point this weekend & Darley vs Redan. Porter vs The Jordans, then the Roosters retirees against the young enthusiastic devils.

Lot of sore players from interleague backing up this week i would imagine.

As an ex-redaine, who experienced some terrible times, along with some very bad hidings at the hands of Sunbury, Melton and co. It is great to see them back as a competitive unit. Can someone let me know if they are a premiership chance this year and whether some of the young kids then, like Ash Barker, Ricky Cummins, Luke Cooney and co. are still running around. Surely Marty Cusack has finally retired!

Cooney went to WA I think (maybe Qld) about 5 yrs ago, Cummins was chasing big dollars in the regional leagues a couple of yrs back but couldnt get a gig, dont think he is playing at all, Cusacks not there any more and 'Cannonball' Barker is still there and performing very well. As for their premiership chances, they now have 9 (that I know of) ex North Ballarat VFL listed players on their list including Liston Trophy winner Julian Field, so I think that should give you some idea.

He has just came back from injury injury - his broken leg from last year is still giving him problems.

Then first game of the year done an ankle - came back couple of weeks ago in the twos and tore his hammy -

also lost a lot of brain cells as well from what i have been told.

Chooka (Robert Henry) has been a disheartened in his comeback from all reports. His broken leg was very similar to nathan browns and as we know brown still isnt playing either. He has had complications along the way and he did tear his hamstring a few weeks ago but will give his leg more time to strengthen. Will be a late recruit for the devils come finals time.

He is also Going very well on the circuit and picked up a team mates cousin on the function to the mornington cup. All good though and no fall out from this.

Thats right mate, 14 against Melton is not a bad days work is it. Backed up with a lazy 15.9 against Bacchus Marsh on Saturday. The Marsh will be lucky to win a game this year but those numbers against any opposition is pretty good work. The only thing that may stop this bloke is if the weather turns foul - which is not likely in sunny Ballarat!

I have been lucky enough to see this guy play at stbernards a few years ago, and at east fremantle recently. Great set of hands and lovely kicking style, will be a handful for any backline.
Any thoughts on sunbury people?

ryang
29 May 2006, 23:09
Sunbury have not started well but are too good a side to continue going the way they are. Power and Griffin are injured and they would leave a gaping hole in any team, I reckon they miss Gadsden, and Baird is going through the motions in the 2s. Power doesnt like losing so it will be interesting to see how he handles it - and how his players react to him. He puts a bit of pressure on himself and his team by having a fair bit to say in the papers, - like only being worried about the the prelim and grand finals, the rest just being formalities. Have heard a few whispers of in fighting but could be just mischief from other clubs licking their lips at the thought of the Sunbury empire crumbling. Only a fool would right them off this early

The fact of the matter is, Sunbury is not as good as they think they are...

They have to work this year, this will show how much spirit they have, hope they can come out of this a stronger side.. But at the moment, they dont look like it.

They are still are talented side TS but maybe last years grand final and the post season shenanigans have taken a toll. Perhaps other teams dont see them as invincible any more after a few losses, and go into games against them with a different mindset than previous years. Also I think the competition is hotter this year with the improvement of East Point and Ballarat, (Redan and Darley are probably stronger this year as well), so got to be up most weeks now. Still reckon they will be therabouts again though.

Dan Jordan is killing teams and with east points on ballers i think east have the right mix to give the flag a shake this yr. just wondering if anyone had watched Matt Dwyer over the last few weeks. he had 43 touches against Sebas and found alot of it against sunbury. clearly is one of the best players going around the BFL never fumbles and uses the pill well most times. Also look for brendan peace to start finding some form

Ryan Harris and Ash Baker from Ballarat have to be 2 very underrated players in the BFL. Rhino Harris went 4 straight weeks with 40+ touches and Bakes just always gets 30+ and this year he's kicking goals aswell. Swooper has everyone up there playing for eachother and this hasn't happened for a few years.
