No offence at all - just stirring my good mate Scoble up. You may have missed my fat little legs comments about him.

I did not see the game on the weekend - Sunbury needed the confidence boost. Serge told me a 1st gamer was very impressive on the weekend. Big future for him?

The two Powers are arguably the two best coaches in the BFL. Great rivallry and both showing they are doing great things with young sides. I imagine there is to be a fair push for Demon Power to return to Sunbury and partner up his younger brother Mark, if that happens, look out, would be very very difficult to stop, both extremely good tactically.

JOhn Northey has made a Ballarat Swans side, with less talent than the past few years, into a really great team. DOn't leave him out

Northey has done a super job with the list he has, although I think the list is better than what people give credit.
Maybe someone might take your advice Polly lions and go after both Chapman and Scoble as a double act?

Number of factors BB:

1) Injuries have definately hurt them. Griffo, Power, Charmers

2)Drop in from from some of their key players - Cheep and Baird to name a couple!

3) Very tough draw - they have played East Point, Melton, Ballarat and Redan all away but get them at home in the run in.

4) I think Power goes well - you don't take a team in the BFL to 16-1 if you can't coach.

5) Clubs have improved this year. Ballarat, Redan and East Point have really strengthened there teams. Melton is still strong and Darley solid. Great for the comp.

6) And most important BB - not many flags are won in July - every team know they are the sleeping giant and if right come September they will be a huge chance to still win it. 6th now will finish 4th - interesting to see if anyone will put there hand up and say Sunbury are no chance!

And just to give you an example - Gissy V Eaglehawk is getting rapt up on the Bendigo league but it is 2 V 5.

I believe they have lost that intimidation factor and there big bodies have been running out of legs against fitter sides, ie Ballarat and East Points come from behind wins.

Speak to anyone involved in the club and they will say the club has been down before and they will get up again. I think they have been concentrating on off field stability in the passed couple of years and now they have that pretty much sorted (there are more improvments planned) then they are willing to make inroads into the playing group.

Gards is doing well. He is another one that has shown promise through the year. I was speaking to Sutha tonight and he is one player he mentioned could be a very damaging player in the couple of years with more progress in his game and with decent players around him.
I think Andy was just offered more money to go to Hepburn and really I dont blame him. If he wanted to taste a bit of success then The Marsh wasn't the place to be this year.
I saw him the other day but didn't get to speak to him to see how he is going. Hopefully we will see him back at the Marsh next year. I won't hold my breath but then again I wouldn't be surprised.

Good to here they will stick it out. I'm impressed they stick it out each year. Its tough getting a team to stick together when they get beat every week, but it would be even easier just to give up. At times, they play some good footy. They just dont have the depth in the club to play four quarters.

I lined up on him a few years ago in an intraclub match when Hicky was still coaching and he made me look like a half wit. Took a huge hanger on me and I just thought who the **** does this kid think he is......(Mind you I was never a 1's player) Then that year he won rookie of the year in the BFL and I thought he was just an awesome player. For his size he is amazing. Pound for pound would be up there with the best of them.

Ricky has been great, average about 25 possies a game, kicked some brilliant goals. Was one of the catalysts of the comeback against Sunbury. Has become an automatic selection.

Yeh I agree with you.
I'm one of many who are involved off the field dedicated to lifting the club off the bottom of the ladder.
They have been down for quiet some time now and their confidence is shot to pieces. Thats why they play good footy in patches but cant for 4 quarters..That and the fact that the average age is 20 to 21.

Grand Final replay will be massive this week!

Why would sergey tag Brett Connors from the marsh all game last week when they were winning by 15 goals at half time and cruised home by 180 points. They were never going to lose and just seemed silly for him to do it.

Aussie out with an ACL is a cruel blow for him and the club

John Northey doing wonders for Ballarat but they struggled against South on the weekend.

Massive grand final replay. Any inside gos on match ups etc

Respect I guess. When we played Redan their coaching panel that sits up in their fancy coaches box were very B.C worried. In patches he can cut you up.
I would be happy if I was a Sunbury member or fan because that would mean that sergey is hungry for the win and didn't want to risk anything. He's obviously not complacent.
Shocking that Aussie has done his knee. He has done the ACL, medial, lateral and slight tear of the miniscus. Goes in for his op next week. Says he will be back playing footy.

Ballarat looked pretty good last time the marsh played them. I noticed a big improvement to last year. Northey is a very good thing for them.

Great win by Sunbury. The lions are starting to roar. The devils are also moving along nicely so could be a massive 1st week of the finals. Darley has beaten them twice this season though. East and Redan are the form sides in the western block. Ballarat struggled aginst bacchus marsh on the weekend for 3/4 and you would think that melton would beat them but they too have really struggled for a few weeks. How did they look against Sunbury???

Still there are still to many weeks left to make predictions this far out.

The top 6 would be confirmed and playing for spots at the moment. Sebas, lakers , south & the marsh are looking for next year already.

Julian Field will win redan's has been good every week and is winning the redan MVP voting by a ****load.

Ryan Harris would have to be winning ballarat's to, great player who can play as a rover and also take strong pack marks. very under rated

and east point dan jordan would have polled a few 3's for his bags of goals he has kicked

The evergreen ruckman Travis Stephenson has also been in very solid consistent form this season as has Lee Cox and Brad Miller so not so sure that Cape will win it at Darley. CJ Young was in great form early but now injured.

Brett Connors will win the Marsh B & F if he stopped playing now.

Porter would be a chance at Melton although Button has also been good. Berger is out for 5 weeks now with a stress fracture of the foot.

Melton South would be a raffle although Reardon always figures and is their best player.

Field would have to win it at Redan a mentioned.

Not sure on who is on fire at Sunbury??? They are starting to warm up though

Any tips on the Henderson???

Saw him play on the weekend, Carved em in the first quarter, was a bit quiet after that but the conditions in the rat didn't help anyones cause for a good game. His death touches were irreplaceable as he set up 2 or 3 goals in the last quarter to finally shake the lesser ranked opponants

Heard that Jordan was checked pretty close by hard nut Ben Collier and others, so much so that the other EP forwards had free reign for the day. Jordan moved up the field after half time to find some space.

Reckon you are right about an all Ballarat GF Vineyard, but not so sure about who would be favourites. Redan are a great side but I saw East and Melton yesterday and East look the real deal. Sunbury looming as a big threat also - they will be setting themselves to be peaking in September. None of the others in the hunt.

Redan seem to be the pace setters at the moment. Still you dont win premierships in July everyone. fact is, from the footy I have seen this year any of the top 5 sides could win the premership, it will totally depend on injuries and who is available on the day. Spoke with an insider yesterday who told me Darley had 13 senior players not play on the weekend against Redan, (only 9 senior players played) and never expected to win. So Redan whilst the standout to this point, shouldnt be basing favouritsm on beating a Darley reserve side. Remember last time redan played Darley it was a 1 goal difference.
East Redan and Melton have been the less affected by injury this year, hence their top 3 status. All quality sides, but I think this years premiership will be decided by each clubs medical teams.

Of the top six ballarat wont win but i think the rest all have legitimate chances.

East & Redan still my pick, Massive clash for Melton (against Darley) this week (Season Defining) and nobody will want to play Darley or Sunbury come finals time. IF these sides click & in form they are as good as it gets. Discipline hurts them though sometimes which can be the difference when the cup is held up. The power boys are being very smart this year....

Melton did it last year when no one gave them a chance.

Melton South dumps coach
Friday, 28 July 2006

MELTON South has dumped coach Julian Shanks with only five games remaining in the Ballarat Football League season.
Club president Devon Sproule confirmed last night that Shanks had been sacked and would not see out his first year at the helm.

Shanks, who earlier this month said he wanted to stay at Melton South for another two or three years, declined to comment last night.

The Panthers have appointed reserves coach Travis Chapman to the senior post for the rest of the season and for next year.

Mr Sproule said a "mutual" decision was made to part company with Shanks because the "marriage' was under strain.

"It's just like a marriage that didn't work," he said.

"A mutual agreement has been made with both parties and both have left with a mutual respect."

Shanks' season with Melton South had been anything but a honeymoon.

The Panthers, who played in the elimination final last year, have managed only two wins.

In a The Courier interview earlier this month Shanks said he had found the going tough as the replacement to Melton South's favourite son Matthew Sproule - the president's son.

"It has been tough, but what I say to people is don't judge me over 10 games, judge me over a couple of years," he said.

The past Melton premiership captain and Williamstown star of the 1990s admitted he had felt like an outsider coming into the club.

But he was confident that the side's on-field improvement in the second half of the season - including a win against Sebastopol and a draw with Melton - was proof he could take it further.

"I want to plant my feet here for two or three years ... because we're working our backsides off to get the club going in the right direction" Shanks said.

Mr Sproule said the team's poor on-field return was not the main reason for yesterday's decision.

"There's probably a number of things. I don't want to go any further into that," he said.

"He didn't get as much out of it just as we didn't get as much out of it.

"We left on good terms and that's the way we want to keep it. He's welcome back any time."

Mr Sproule said the appointment of Chapman was a popular decision.

Leave Scoble alone. Darley needs him!!!

Porter and Waight dominated for Vic Country in the Australian Championships and will be all australian.

A few SANFL clubs are after porter. Waight would have to be picked up by a VFL club or even rookied.

Sunbury vs Redan in the match of the round & the wheels have fallen off at Melton. Two coaches heads in two weeks?

East Point - $4.50
Sunbury - $6
Darley - $8
Melton - $8 (only beacuse they will finish 3rd)

It would appear that Darley have some thinking to do? Is Power staying on?
Sounds like Porter & Waight did themselves, their clubs and the league proud.
Any word on Blomely & Jordan? how did they go?
Sunbury @ $6 interesting KA, can Serge crank them up enough to get the job done in 2006?
Any word on Ron Thomas' future? Rumour is the Melton boys dont want him anymore?

Sunbury will nearly be equal 2nd favourties with a good win this week. The sleeping giants are waking up.

Big worry on East Point is that if Jordan is shut down where do the goals come from?

My tip is another Redan V Sunbury Grand Final. Would that be 4 in 5 years?

well done to Ryan Waight. made all australian and from all reports killedit. Porter also a stand out for Vic country.

notice matt walsh ex redan full fwd kicked 7 and got BOG for queensland in the play of for 3rd and 4th in div 2. the dry conditions of QLD would suit him better than the wet ones in ballarat where he still stared for Redan.

word is however matt walsh to wondoga raiders in the O&M next yr.

Both Powers will be finished up next season, though i think Serge deserves another year.
Keenan Reynolds will coach Darley as Matt just cant get them to the next level. Always elimated 1st week of the finals. Rumor has it Shane Robertson will coach Sunbury next season. Not much of a coach in my opinion, just coaches sides with a lot of $$$$ that makes him look like a good coach. This info was given to me by players from Castlemaine and Hepburn where he has coached.
East/Point/Redan G/F with Redan to win. Jordan is there one and only forward and their backs are not attacking enough. East Point have forked out massive $$$ to try and win a flag, and i think they will fail, as sides have worked out how to beat Jordan.
Ron Thomas will be gone within 2 weeks. He has resigned twice and the club is just waiting for the 3rd one. Simon Payne will coach for the remainder of the year and give them back the spark, which might see them challenge Redan/East for a G/F position.

I've been told by a few Hepburn blokes that Robertson is a very good coach, and don't forget that Hepburn have had sides capable of winning flags before Robertson arrived, but haven't always been able to do it. I think he picks his jobs pretty carefully so he would probably like what Sunbury had to offer if you are right. Seems to have the knack of being able to attract high quality players to follow him which would be a big factor for clubs when appointing a coach. Money alone won't always get gun players, have been hearing for years that Sebas have plenty of money but still struggle to attract the right players.
Time will tell on East Point, reckon they can find enough goals without Jordan dominating but agree their back line might be suspect.

No use talking about Sunbury Coaching, Serge deserves it and has it for another 2 yrs I believe also. Word has it Darley job will come down to a decision from one person, and that is the current coach Matt Power. he will determine his own fate, players support him, one thing to say that he cant get them to another level, but as you all know, you need the cattle, and he aint had the cattle, has finished 3rd and 4th last two years and this year with near on 8 senior players out a week, to be sitting 4th at the minute, sensational effort, getting most out of his players available. Pulled off a total rebuild and still a very young list.
Thomas gone, Payne in?? Tough on Thomas, has results on the board!!

Not saying MAtt Powell isnt a good coach, but he has been there for a few years now, and a new lease of life may be needed... Is Keenan Reynolds likely to take over from him..???
Serge is great, and i love the way he plays, coaches and isnt shy about calling a spade a spade, but footy clubs want premierships, and sunbury have been the biggest chokers over the past 4 years. They pay BIG $$$ and just havnt seen the rewards. If they cant beat Redan at home this week, then it will definantly be an East V Redan G/F. Sunbury are the 3rd best side...

Chokers?? Have you seen any of the Grand Finals?

02 - The 1st year Redan won was Ok

03 - Serge got a red card in the 1st 5 minutes for nothing - he was
cleared at the tribunal! Sunbury played with 17 men all game and lead at 3/4 time but got ran over the top off.

04 - They won the flag

05 - Melton - another red card discgrace with the best CHB in the comp red carded for nothing again - he got 1 week but that was beacuse of a new rule that a red card is automatic 1 week. So in other words he was cleared as well.
Also if you did not see the game get a copy and watch the third quarter when Sunbury got on a roll - the ump decides to hand out 4 50 metre penalties all resulting in goals but not one was worthy of 50.

How the umps can hand out red crads in a Grand Final for trival offeneces is beyond me. A king hit that knocks a bloke out should be the only reason.

Also the $$ tag a has been handed to Redan and East Point.

Sunbury only have 2 non-local players that play for them.

Redan 5 ex VFL players - East Point - Jodan boys.

Word also is that Power hates the way Snibsen plays his footy so keep an eye on him before the 1st bounce.

Maybe thats why when it has come to grand finals they haven't had the best treatment.

Having watched all those Grand Finals, i tend to disagree with you. Sunbury believe they have a rule to themselves and dont understand the spirit of the game. That comes from the culture of the club, which desperately needs to be changed.

03- Serge got sent of for kneeing Kenneddy, then lupson decided to try and jump the fence after he cowardly attacked a player. Tough players win the hard ball, not hit players. Discipline cost them the flag, as they were clearly the best side

04- Stillclearly the best side in the comp

05- Allan O'Connor- What a stupid thing to do- kneed Grenville whilst he was on the ground injured- Didnt think it was worth a red card, but the rule states any misconduct which kneeing comes under can receive a red card. Umpire should have given him a yellow. Umpires dont decide games, they make mistakes, but the best team will always win- Thats a cop out, and Melton were clearly the better side. Good to see Sunbury got rid of Gadsen.. What a waste of space and front runner he was.. Sooked everytime he had to compete.. just wanted it all on a silver plate.

This comes from an independent person, who has played in the BFL and all those Finals series....

Melton the better side? Sunbury were 16-0 last year and Melton finish 4th. Very Very lucky!!

Sunbury have always ran forward of the ball and look good when things are going there way. When u keep belting sides week in week out like they have, u develop bad habits, and as soon as a bit of pressure is applied they faulter. Finals football is different to home and away games, and if they concentrated on discilpine footy like Redan (Never the best side, but have 2 flags & 1 Flag for Melton) they would be better off. As i say the culture off the club needs to change. No use Belting Bacchus marsh by 35 goals, it would be smarter to play people in different positions so that when the crunch comes around finals time, there back line has had a sniff.
Thats why i think Sunbury are a better chance this year of winning the finals then the last few...

as any afl coach would say it takes approx 5 years to build a genuine premiership contender. Power has been there 4 and witha great young list so expectations would be much higher next year. He will coach on and get the rewards he deserves.

Ballarat FL boys shine in VCFL Australian title win !

Report by BFL CEO Rod Ward who attended the ACFC Carnival:
It was an amazing privilege to attend the 2006 Australian Country Football Championships last weekend on the Gold Coast, and to see the VCFL side get home in the most amazing set of circumstances you will ever see over the ACT in Sundays Grand Final.

If I watch football for another 50 years I doubt I will see a more dramatic end to any game, let alone a State V State Grand Final with the Australian title on the line !

For those who have not heard by now, the Vic?s were 5 points down with less than 20seconds on the clock when an ACT player had a shot from 3 metres out ? we all thought for sure it was a goal and it was all over ? only to see the Goal Umpire signal touched after a late dive by Leigh Gathercole (Sunraysia FL) saw him get the faintest touch on the ball. From the kick out the Vics got a free kick and 50m penalty. Joe McLaren (Koroit FC) then unleashed a torpedo with 1 second remaining, from well inside the centre square the huge crowd watched in amazement as it sailed through by a good 10metre (making it approx 70 ? 80m kick) to tie the game and force extra time.

BFL reps Brendan Porter and ?DJ? Jordan then both took big marks and goaled in extra time and the title of Australian Country Champions was ours !

The result on Sunday was the culmination of a month of hard training and 3 days of tough football by a committed and dedicated bunch of 24 players, who were superbly led by Coach Leigh Colbert and his Assistants Anthony Stevens, Craig Sholl and Stephen Reaper. I am thrilled to advise that all 4 BFL representatives Dan Jordan (East Point FC), Ryan Waight (Redan FC), Nathan Blomeley (Redan FC) and Brendan Porter (Melton FC) performed superbly, and represented themselves, their families, their State, Club and the BFL with distinction.

I am further delighted to report that Ryan Waight (Redan FC) and Brendan Porter (Melton FC) were selected n the 22 man ?All Australian? side at the post carnival official dinner which is a huge honour.

Ryan Waight played every min of every game in the back pocket and was part of very settled and effecive back 6. He had a sweeping role and played consistent football across all 4 games, and provided a great deal of drive out of defence for the Vic?s. Waighty was mentioned in the best twice, and talent scouts were amazed by his aerial ability and his courage running against the flight of the ball when on several occasions he put his body on the line to take big grabs or to effect a spoil.

Dan ?DJ? Jordan booted 5 goals for the Carnival, including 3 in the Grand Final and a match winner in extra time. He thrilled the crowd with several big grabs, including a ?screamer? against NSW on the Saturday which was Mark of the Day. It was a tough day for forwards on the Friday playing at Cararra in the wettest and worst conditions I have witnessed after a tropical storm had the ground under water, but DJ stood tall when the Vics needed him most and was a real focal point.

Likewise Nathan Blomeley provided the inspiration when needed with 3 goals in the Carnival and 2 in the Grand Final which were pivotal in the Vics win. Blommers thrilled the crowd with his pace and long kicking, and ?a moment of magic? in the Grand Final when he ran down an ACT defender and goaled got the Vics up & running and there is no doubt that his name was penciled in the books of several talent scouts !

Brendan Porter was superb and covered more ground than most as a leading forward and key focal point for his side. Ports was best for the Vics against the ACT on the Friday, and then returned to haunt them on the Sunday in the Grand Final where his 4 goals and aerial supremacy proved to be the catalyst for the Vics win.

All 4 BFL players will go on to play approx 300+ games of football over the length of their career, and it is unlikely they will remember all of those games - but there is no doubt that they will remember their 4 days on the Gold Coast for the 2006 ACFC, and the incredible climax at Southport which saw them crowned Australian Champions for the rest of their lives. Well done boys on a remarkable achievement !

It is also worth pointing out former Redan player Keirnan Molloy (Skipton FC) starred for the Vic District side across the carnival in Division 2, and former Redan FC team mates Scott Easdown and Matthew Walsh also representing the Qld side in Division 2 - with Walshy booting 7 on the Sunday in the Qld win over the New Zealand National side.

This is a good discussion. I think what has to be kept in perspective, is yes it is terrific recruiting by both East and Redan, you have to use your connections and if your good enough to get the players and recruit them and keep them, you should be congratulated as obviously the club has a terrific culture and environment that the players enjoy.

Tell me though where Snibson, Field, Edwards, Murrihy, Blomely, Lubeek, Barker, Dwyer, Peace, Bridges, Jenkins, Giblett, Pitt, Dickinson, Reid, Jones, Giampaolo, Dru Quinlan, played their junior football? was it through the Redan Junior Football Club?

In their premiership years, where did Walsh, Molloy, Kennedy, Freeland, Ellis, Nunn, Partington play there junior football, was it the Redan Junior Football Club.

Twenty Five players named there, curious as to how many played through the Redan Junior Ranks.

No not a Redan Supporter, but i know all those guys pretty well, and have played with some before in inter-league. They are a very professional unit, and from what ive heard, that many of their star players are paying for minimal $$$ to win a flag together. If it happens this year, I believe that there could be a massiive walk out, as most of these players will go back to theor home club. i.e Field will coach Avoca- Edwards to Nth Ballarat (Bendigo league.) to coach. They will be back in the Ballarat football league within 5 years

Not whingeing - just point out a fact that Redan have spent up for this year. Interesting that none of the 25 players that Jarmen listed played juniors for Redan. Are you a Redan supporter - I have read your posts and cannot work out who you support:confused:

From what i understand, East-Point have many players who are not local either- Both Jordans (St. Bernards) Faull (Newlyn) Fisher (Lexton) McGuigan (Learmonth) Bones (Beaufort) Drum (???) Hutchison (Laker Wendouree) Geljon (YCW/Lakers) Kinnersly (Port Fairy) George (Not from area) Kent ( Not from area) Sheedy (Not from area) and im sure there's more. Also adding to this is that they took a weak option out and merged, and have two junior clubs to choose from, so u would expect them to be strong.

Word also is that Power hates the way Snibsen plays his footy so keep an eye on him before the 1st bounce.[/quote]

Snibsen must log on to Big Footy - he has pulled out of Sunday's game!!:thumbsd:

A couple of big outs for Redan - look for Sunbury to send a big message to the league this weekend!!!:thumbsu:

Great mental disintegration on Snibbo Kings Army.

Would be good to see sunbury play a challenger instead of getting on the band wagon after beating the marsh, south & ballarat. A true test. Hope they smash them though.

And further to our group discussion. How many clubs in any country comp won a flag without a group of distinguished recruits who arent from that area.

All those guys from redan/east point have come from lower leagues to play in the best comp in the district and obviously work committments etc. Why would they play in a below standard comps in poor facilities and cant be bagging people for wanting to play with their mates.

Good clubs dont have players who leave their junior ranks. 90% of the darley seniors played juniors there. Scoble has connections through his father playing, Cape came back after playing juniors there, Miller the same. A couple of sunbury boys who came with Power and that is it.

Gisborne - every player last year either went to school in Gisborne or played junior football there. The only player you could count as an outsider is Duff Tyler who moved to Gisborne 4 years ago.

where does the coach of sunbury get off saying redan has a suspect backline apart from snibson and lubeek in todays courier. matthew pitt is one of the most rock solid defenders ive ever seen. not to mention the likes of king, peace etc. does anyone else think redans backline is suspect or is it just that bloke?

They would have a suspect backline but their midfield dominates. lubeek and snibbo shut down the talls and the rest are great runners and create the loose man. Pitt i am not sure about. think your pumping him up a bit. very easy to shut down the third option if your half decent. Peace is a midfielder and doesnt know how to man up. Zfinals will tell how good this backline is.

Massive clash today and Redan would want to win.

Good call kings army. great side gisborne and saunders coming back proves they are a great local side. Do have lots of cash though.

redans forward line is their weakness not their backline. Lubeek Snibbo pitt king and cummins have been good all year and will stand up come finals time. good win to sunbury yesterday however would like to know if they were at full strength? redan were missing some key players in lubeek, sibbo, jones and nicholson. also noticed brendan peace got best, seems to have a habit of getting best against sunbury. but from yestrdays game is shows sunbury are the real deal and lets just hope for everyones sake they stick to playing football and dont throw away another great chance to win a flag

Sunbury were missing Power, Payne, Cheep and Clarke from there best.

Interesting to hear Power at quarter time. He spoke how Blommely plays unaccountable football and would not get a game at Riddell if he had to play accountable football. As there were half a dozen Riddell players there I thought it was a great back handed swipe at them!
