was right infront of it, it was a bit of push and shove and then miller got a hold of him (cant remember the number) picked him up and choke slamed him straight out on his back then all the other players ran in.....then supporters and then the law enforcement...
a few points....
darley should have had at least 8 goals on the board at qtr time = game over!
cheevers injured early didnt help!
i dont intend to stir up or anything, but why did the last qtr go for 35 minutes when only 2 goals were scoreD?
but i'm not saying ballarat were not deserving of it well done to them a good win....
cant wait to watch the footy in 09
(darley to bounce back hahaha) now i will stir :D;)
The last quarter went about 32 mins- but of course the timekeepers cheated didnt they? Bloody timekeepers are ruining football!!!
Nothing to do with kicking all those points in the first quarter.

There is an old Saying that you can't play injured players in finals.
Chevers shouldn't have played with that hamstring & Newmans shoulder probably wasn't a 100%
The devils missed vital shots in the last term from 20-30 out. Kyle Doyle played an awesome game for a 17 year-old. Tuddy Edwards was easily Darleys best. Darren Leonard, also 17, played a handy game. Cape and Deckert were good aswell.
Miller needed to keep a cool head during the brawl at 3-QT. Him and D.Young let the team down with there send-offs. The older, experienced players should have shown some leadership during the fight.
Once again, there was a pack of young devils fans on the Alcohol near darleys bench being idiots and giving it to the Ballarat supporters whenn the devils were in front & giving the club a bad name.
Need to keep Chevers, Edwards & Newman for next year to have another shot. Heard a rumor they were chasing Lee Cox from hepburn
In the reserves game, darley had to deal with some shocking umpire decisions. On one ocassion Gav Miller ran about 5 steps with the ball & got done for running to far! I am guessing they were ballarat umpires.Dion Lea, Ross Gundry, Shannon Mcdonald were darleys best. The darley 2nds have had a awesome season, coming from nowhere to reach the grandfinal. Not bad for a team who has there seniors in the granny too. Well done to Tank and the boys
All in All a great season from devils. Carn the Devils 2009
I agree with most of this - but please dont blame the umpires for the seconds loss. Redan was always favourite and in the end won by the biggest margin of the day - 5 goals. the umpies didnt make that much difference. darley did do a good job to get to the last game but the wheels were going to fall off eventually. they just didnt have the depth to carry it off.
we could have had umpires from upper botswana and the result would have been the same.

Thought umpiring was suprisingly ok in the reserves?
Not a great season if you haven't got a cup in you cabinet bambino, Ballarat now have more respect and deservingly so after there win.
Darley have seriously blown there best possibility of a flag... Redan ,East & Sunbury are only going to get stronger after a disappointing year.

Have seen the 3 qtr time incident on replay. Some shocking decisions by the umpires. Started with Brad Anderson smothering Miller's kick as the siren had sounded, Miller was frustrated and threw a backhander into Anderson's back. Anderson turned around, then Miller grabbed Anderson by the throat, squeezed him and then slammed him into the ground. He was reported for rough conduct, which was spot on. Anderson layed there for the entire incident that followed, and somehow was sent off by the umpires. Played absolutley no part in anything and the send off could have cost Ballarat the premiership. What followed was very hard to see, bodies everywhere and a lot of punches being thrown. Newman seemed to be very much into it, as did some Ballarat players, but they escaped penalty. Still can't work out how they decided to send off Anderson. A Darley player was reported for striking Josh Caldow in the melee, and Caldow was on the bench and 80m from the spot where it happened the entire time? Most likely will get thrown out.
It terms of the game, the difference between the two captains could not be clearer. One loses his head, displays absolute stupidity and costs his team dearly. The other plays his heart out and single-handedly (and with his trusty left-boot aswell) delievers the Swans its first flag in 20 years.
A quick comment on the Darley "supporters". An absolute disgrace. Fans running around the opposition huddle with flags, being encouraged by the rest of the crowd, showing absolutley zero respect to anyone. Another punched M.Nunn in the stomach during the fracas at 3/4 time and was swiftly taken away by police. Got exactly what they deserved, and exactly what everyone in Ballarat hoped for. Cheevers was disgustingly selfish for playing, and then refusing to come off when clearly he had re-injured his dodgy hamstring. All about himself and wanted to be the hero, when he should have sat out and let a fit player perform. Have to wonder what his fitness test involved during the week, it was clear from the beginning that he was nowhere near his best, which was crucial because he carved up Ballarat late in the year. Every mistake Darley made fell into Ballarat's hands and gave them the slight chance they needed, and Baker made the most of it! What an amazing day...
Congrats to Ballarat and John Northey, silenced all those critics that had written them off as soft and chokers. In 100 years time they will still be premiers in 2008. Darley, Miller and all there supporters will be nowhere to be seen.
Not all darley supporters are disgraceful. There just a small bunch that ruin it for the rest and give the club a bad name

I think Darley seniors will be up there again. I agree that redan & Sunbury will reload, Need to retain Edwards & Chevers, But Newman has signed for next year. Rumor has it that they have Apparently has signed Callum Urch from the VFL and wants Lee Cox back from Hepurn. Cox has kicked 100 goals in the past 2 seasons.

Apparently, Darleys coach Gary Learmonth kept on asking the time keepers how long was left in the final term because darleys bench and the time keepers box were about 10metres apart. Late in the last term he turned around and asked how long was left and one of the time keepers said 15 seconds. 20 seconds later he asks again and one time keepers said that was it, no more time. About 15 seconds later the siren goes.
maybe it was just all the stopages?

It's time for the highly anticipated (not really but gotta pump up my own tyres) grand final player rankings.
It was a remarkable contest and for mine it was noteable for the fact that a single player or group of players who dominated the contest, it was a game full of honest four quarter performances.
OK here I go, I'm sure everyone will disagree with me but i'll give it a shot
Ballarat
8
Aaron Brennan - good solid game in the ruck
Mark Nunn - presented really well and was consistent throughout. His battle with Shaun Deckert was a highlight.
Nigel Otto - his first quarter was vital in keeping the Swans in touch early.
7
Chris Thornton - liked his game, thought he had a super finals series
Ash Baker - will always be remembers for the that goal but had a pretty good day on top of that.
Adam Sewell
Corey Grills
6
Aaron Nunn
Wil McGregor
Sam Harkin - scored some important goals at key moments of the game
Nathan Anderson
Tristan May
Josh Caldow
5
Sam Caldow
Bowen Harvey
Matthew McVilly
Daniel Thompson
4
Joe Otto - didn't have a huge impact
Brad Anderson - losses points for a yellow card
3
Mark Cunningham - very quiet
1
Ricky Allan - didn't realise he was playing until he collected his premiership medal. Had a shocker but at least he didn't miss from 20-metres out
Darley
7
Jarrod Edwards
Chris McGill - good game but may be haunted by his late miss
Brent Smithwick - worked hard to create space, was probably underutilised by Devils who tended to be overly Newman-centric.
Travis Stephenson - battled hard in the ruck
Shaun Deckert - as I mentioned earlier his battle with Mark Nunn was a highlight.
6
Matthew Cape
Lachlan Herring
Darren Leonard - didn't have a huge first half but his efforts in the third term helped kickstart the Devils
5
Drew Edwards - Pants early by Nigel Otto but improved as the game went on
Brad Miller - didn't have his usual impact. Did some good things but loses points for the yellow card
Adrian Newman - looked rusty at times. Tried to break open the packs but wasted too many opportunities
Ben Robbins
Luke Guerra
Jarryd King
Kyle Doyle - super young talent who had a shocker in the first half, looked like the occassion got the better of him. Once settled after half time showed his real ability.
4
Travis Edwards
Adam Bell
3
Leigh Freestone
David Young -little impact, got a yellow card, forgettable finals series overall
Travis Minns - extremely quiet and the less said about that miss the better
2
Rob Cheevers - his day was over by half time after breaking down again. His class was sorely missed after half time.

Both clubs do supply timekeepers for the reason confusia said. Darley's is Gordon Closter and anyone who know's Gordy or knows anything about the characters of the Darley Football Club can tell you that Gordy bleeds the black and white of the Devils and has selflessly given so much to the club over the decades that to hint that there was any inpropriety in the timekeepers is just wrong.

The question has to be asked, why did Newman play loose man in the backline the whole last quarter? He looked like the only player that could win the game. Even when Ballarat got even they kept him down back, surely Darley should have tried to win the game. Newman was clearly their best player and if he had of kicked straight he could have kicked 8+ goals but the whole last qtr was played down back even though they were only 15 points up. Terrible coaching by Learmonth. Shouldn't have played Cheevers, and no way should have kept Newman back as he looked like the matchwinner early on and Ballarat didn't have a good match-up for him all day.

And D.Edwards has to be the worst player ever to be named in the team of the year. In the 2nd semi he didn't go near Rick Allan, played on Nige Otto. Nige went off early with a foot injury and copped abuse from the big tough guy as he hobbled off. Otto returned in the 2nd half on one leg and kicked 3.3 on Drew Edwards. Edwards was the player that showed absolutley no respect to Otto and the Ballarat players, and gave them the extra motivation to beat them if they got another chance. Ballarat were rapt when Edwards went to Otto at the start of the Grand Final because they knew Edwards was the worst player in Darleys side. Otto proved that by kicking 3 goals into the breeze and setting the game alight. Darley supporters can't even try justify his inclusion into the team of the year beacause he got found out twice on the big stage by a bloke who was only 50% fit.

Should have had him up forward in the last term. At least he could had kicked a goal from 20-30 metres out, unlike Minns and McGill. Newman played with a bad shoulder. He needed 2 people to help him get his jumper off in the rooms after the game. and it was heavily strapped. As for Chevers, the thursday night before the game (the final training session) he barley did anything at all. Instead of playing an injured bloke, could have played guys like Gav Miller and Ross Gundry from the 2s.

Players need to be loyal to a club not a coach. If it is the other way around the coach can hold a club to ransom. eg. if he were to leave, x amount of players would leave the club. A club can't let itself be put in that position.

My memory is a bit dim but Mark Verbene was a very good back half player in the Redan comeback premierships 02-03.
He played in those games with Aaron Freeland (ex North) and the handy (and tough) Paul Ellis.
All three have been down at Altona recently with Verbene coming along a bit later after playing in the amateurs.
This year Freeland was senior coach and Verbene the reserves coach as far as I can find out. I believe Altona won a Div 2 premiership under Freeland when he first went there. I dont know how Altona performed this year but I suppose that's easy enough to find out.
Verbene is or was a PE/computer teacher in Melbourne according to the Redan website.
I also heard today that about 30 had been interviewed for the job at Redan (and that came from another BFL coach who is one of those). Still you know what the rumours are at this time of year. :)
Damian Ross (also ex-North?) is the director of football at Redan.

Darley supporters can't even try justify his inclusion into the team of the year beacause he got found out twice on the big stage by a bloke who was only 50% fit.
mintonconnell what a load of rot! just goes to show how much you know and how much footy you have seen this year!

Thanks for that.
Heard last night that J.Field has gone back to Avoca and is only loss at this stage.
Also, heard that Dickonson is only one staying at North so to get Peace, Waight, Mikalef & Horbury back will be a big bonus.
Verbene sounds ok, how old would he be? Would he be a playing coach?
News to me about Field. I thought all main players had re-signed. It was always on the cards that he would want to give some time back to Avoca but that is not going around club circles at this stage.
Just on Field - there is a very strong rumour going around that he ate one of the seconds premiership medals!! He has a habit of doing silly things during celebrations but if true that would be one of the dumbest. Waiting to see if he's just trickin'
It looks like you are right that Dicko is staying on to give it another crack at North.
Waight had already left North before the end of the season and would have played the last few games except did a hammy.
It will be great to get the others back but I'm not sure about Micallef.- He's a bit of a mystery man but I hope he would come back to Redan - after all he has two premiership medals with us.
Verbene's age unkbown - would assume he could play but would be getting up there a bit. I reckon he might play a similar role to Murrihy. And although he is mainly a defender - he has played a bit up forward in the past few years. If you go to the redan website ( redanfc.com.au ) and then the "great to hear from" section, there is an email there he sent to the club before last year's grand final which might fill in a few details for you.

He will never pass it - I picked up one of the medallions and they are quite solid. If he really has swallowed it I reckon they will have to cut it out- what a dick brain _ bloody funny tho:D And I suppose Beckham wants his medal back - one way or another!
Cant say too much on here but may be doubt over Micallef. I stress its only second-hand rumour but I heard someone say he may be looking to move on. Really hope its wrong. Bloody good player.

Why doesn't Ben jordan bring Dan Jordan over to sunbury?
Now the footy season is over on all levels for 2008 lets recap what we have learnt in the BFL:
1. Ash Baker > Brad Miller
2. Darley Devils get stage fright
3. Redan are breeding ranga's
4. Wendouree reserve has more water than the lake
and most importantly
5. Too much cyber sex with 'glamours' gives u an overinflated ego, which will shank under pressure. - Chieftonts lesson for the year!;)

East and Darley to choke again
Redan to seriously reload with rangas
Sebas for the spoon
Dan Jordan to seriously think about changing clubs
Dune buggy racing on City Oval at half time
Flogga Loughnan to stop singing that same crappy song every time you walk in his shop
Bacchus Marsh to let cars in again (but only 1978 Commodores)
Melton South to move the goal posts back into the car park where they should be
Darley finally gets colour television and bans cross-eyed kids from playing the banjo in public

Can't really comment on those 3, heard they were very good in there time at redan. Celebrations out of hand? If you mean fires, nudey runs, over excessive consumption of alcohol, swallowing premiership medallions then i'd just say that's normal for us.

Was told my name was floating around on here from a the idiot who put it on here. Yes just turned 30. Yes was assistant at Altona but didn't play this year. Yes moved back to Ballarat last Friday. Will not be coaching Redan. Injuries have struck but am working towards getting fit again. Will not play footy next year but will enjoy watching Redan get back up near top. Freeza is playing at Altona next year (not coaching due to work). Ellis not playing at all due to work and new baby. Am sure Redan will get some one who is similar to Quinna and Muzz who had a ability to attract quality players and people.

I know that a lot of people still hold a lot of resentment to North Ballarat from the BFL days, but hopefully enough time has passed that people are able to get behind the VFL premiers. They provide a great pathway for the regions youngsters to play in the highest possible leagues.
I have heard a few of the Redan boys who tried out the last few years are coming back. I am sure they will be far better players who will enhance the league from their experiences.
Hi men, and girls who want to be men (Doc), Chumpy is back after a week on the gas which produced many sexual encounters.
First off, congrats to Ballarat (and Oral, you told us) it was your day, and not meant to be for us. No one can take that away from you. We have nobody to blame for what happened, and it will be the inspiration required for a huge preseason.
The crowd on GF day just goes to show how much the Darley Football Club is needed in this league. Without doubt the most hated club in the league, and that creates passion and excitement that is desperately needed in the BFL at the moment. (And I’m not talking of the rubbish at 3/4 time, totally what we are against, was a blight on what should have been a great day).
But we will move on, the fountain pen will be working overtime in the next few months, and you can expect a few huge signings to go along with the great team we already have. We lost 2 games for the year (both in the last kick of the day) and our side is young, so we can expect special times over the next few years.

Oracle the devils were wrapped with Newman and Cheevers and Newman has already signed on. Cheevers will sign he told me yesterday. Stay tuned for some exciting news in the next few weeks but i think the Devils are just polishing the edges on signing a player that i think will be the biggest signing in the BFL next year (thats even including if Mark Johnson signs at Sunba ohhhh Sunba). Darley will also seeing the return of Blair Cook who was narrowly beaten in a best and fairest a few years back by Charles Hunter and has been back in training for a few months now. With a full pre-season the cooky monster is sure to bring the required venom to an already potent devils forward line. Im sure all sides will be on the improve next year so these are the type of players we need to be returning to stay competitive

Talking with a past player about the Darley V Ballarat brawl at 3 quarter time. I did not see it but with crowd involved it was one of the better ones.
Speaking of brawls the best I saw was Sunbury V South at Sunbury. D Tazczon had a wrestle with a South player - as more players started coming in he threw the best jumper punch knocking the South player out. He contiuned to hold the player until a large group of players arrived. He let go and slipped out the back of the melee. The south player folded like a deck of cards. There was some serious action after that - Lupson, Ellis, Juric, Goodgiles and J Taczon from Sunbury and Gallop, Stanley and Mick Jones from South.

In all my years of involvement with country footy I have seen better punches thrown, more intense brawls (Hepburn v Bungaree in a final at Springbank, Golden Point v Daylesford in the 80's would be 2), etc etc but for sheer duration this would have to be one of the best.

The mystery of the missing Redan reserves premiership medal deepens. Allegedly eaten by senior player Julian Field during celebrations on grand final night, it has made ABC radio this morning. Apparently the medal has not re-appeared and Field was quoted as saying he'd seen a doctor about possible surgery to get it out. The doctor's verdict was to wait and see a bit longer. It has now been in there (allegedly) for 11 days. I'm still waiting to see if he's tricking!

From Saturday's Courier
Redan have appointed Brendan Peace as playing-coach for the 2009 Ballarat Football League season.
Peace returns to the club after two seasons on the North Ballarat Roosters' Victorian Football League list.
Celebrating his 23rd birthday next week, Peace is poised to become the youngest senior football coach in Redan's club history.
But Peace, who replaces Shane Snibson as coach, was not daunted about holding superiority over older, more experienced Lions.
"Coaching is more about what I can bring to the role with my experience and football knowledge," Peace said.
"We have a pretty young list and I've played a lot of footy with the older guys when I was last with Redan, so I know a lot about how they play already."
Work at the Lions' helm began yesterday for the Ballarat & Clarendon College English teacher, who has already started organising his playing list.
Training is scheduled to start in late November.
Peace said he was honoured to return to Redan, bringing valuable skills and tactical experience from the Roosters.
He hopes to emulate the positive style of North Ballarat coach and mentor Gerard FitzGerald, who encouraged Peace to try coaching.
"I'll definitely try and build a similar relationship with the players but I'll try and put my own spin on the role too," Peace said.
The Lions' dual best and fairest winner has a tough assignment ahead.
Redan is hungry for another bout of finals fever, last tasted in the club's back-to-back flags in 2006-07.
Peace said making finals was his primary aim before considering a push for the premiership.
Redan president Darryl Blomeley said the club was ``rapt'' to have Peace back in its fold.
"Brendan's a classic example of one of our players who has taken his football to the next level, then returned when he was ready to share his experience," Blomeley said. "We really promote that pathway and always welcome back our players.''

Also from Saturday Courier
Melton's 2008 coach Simon Payne has announced he will not coach the Ballarat Football League club next season.
Payne, who was clearly frustrated at times this season, just one year after being named BFL coach of the year, let the club know of his decision not to re-apply for his job on Tuesday.
He formally announced the decision to the playing group at this week's presentation dinner in Caroline Springs.
"I just thought I needed a change. It has been a frustrating year for me on and off the field," Payne said.
"The club has been good to me for 10 years, with three premierships: two as a player and one as coach.
"I plan to have some time off at this stage and look at coming back down the track, possibly at another club."
The club called for expressions of interest for all senior, reserves and under-18.5 football and netball coaching positions at the start of September.
Payne said he had considered re-applying for the position but had since decided he needed the break.
Payne said at least part of the reason for his decision was that he had a different view of where the club should go, in terms of on-field development, than other officials at the club.
"Even though we didn't have a great year in terms of wins and losses, we did give a lot of young players a go this year which I think will stand the club in good stead," Payne said.
"But I feel the club should be actively involved in recruiting good experienced players to help that development."
Payne coached the Bloods for two years, taking over from Ron Thomas. Prior to that, Payne was Thomas's assistant when Melton won the 2005 premiership.
Cross town rival Melton South has also advertised for coaches in reserves and under-18.5 football and senior, reserves and under-18.5 netball, applications closing October 24. Troy Scoble will be the Panthers' sole senior coach in 2009.
