Roughead is almost certain to take up the position of full back, AC, looked as though he was grooming him for the position towards the end of the season. I personally think he will spend 1 - 2 years there, until he eventually takes up the position of chf, where he will be rememered as an afl great ( hopefully) lol

Whats the point of changing him to CHF if he gets the job done at FB ???

Phill Hawk, as we all know, hawthorn have not got a fullback, this is the reason of putting roughead in that position. Ideally, AC would love to groom him at CHF, the position we recruited him for.
But towards the end of last season, he was a regular on the backline, so I feel he will retain that position, as he looks the only player to stand up and be strong performer in that position.
Roughead is far to good of a player to leave on the last line of defence, even if he becomes an outstanding FB, he will be of more value up the field.

agree with that. would love to see him develop into a CHF in 2 yrs time. Imagine Roughead at CHF, Franklin on a HFF and Dowler at FF, with Little and Williams in a pocket. Devastating!

Disagree with Roughhead, if they are playing him at full-back they aren't planning for him being a CHF. Boyle will play CHF if Roughhead, Croad, Jacobs are in the backline. If they wanted Roughhead at CHF, they could just swap him with Boyle.

My bold prediction for the season (admittedly very optimistic) is that we miss out on a finals berth by no more than 1 or 2 spots - Hawks to finish 10th...

Lynch started a fullback remember.... Gehric, Leppitch, all played both ends of the ground.
I reckon its much easier to start in the backline than the forward line. Can rely on reading the play and playing from behind etc.
I wouldn't have a huge problem at all if Roughead ended up being a CHB, but he's so young, so I definately would have his long term aim to be a CHF at about 22/23 years old. Boyle to be CHB, and Dowler Roughead the key forwards is what we should be looking for IMO.
Don't want to make too many predications about us anymore after schwab's infamous one didn't pear shape, but I think we'll improve if guys like Osborne, Ladson, etc. step up from looking good for a couple of quarters, to really start impacting some games. I'd like both to be used through the wings on occasions and take the next step.
I think that's where we'll get improvement.
We can rely on Everitt, Croad, Crawf, Mitchell, Bateman, Hodge to be consistent, but we need the second tier guys to step up.
Vanders and Smith need to really improve as well because they very senior players now.
Roughead, Franklin and Lewis have key roles in only their second season as well, so we can't expect too much consistency, but we could expect to surprise a few more teams, a get a few more wins on the board.
10 wins is very realistic, as I feel we should have won 7-8 games last year anyway if not for running out of legs and inexperience.
A year like the Bulldogs had in 2005 is what I'd like to see us achieve.

I really hope they do not put Roughead at CHB because Croad is very good at that position and he can not play forward, he is a better at chasing than he is at leading. Croad is a great athelete, is strong, a great kicker of the ball but lacks one major quality to be a forward he does not have a brain and you must be smart to play forward.
I think Roughead is going to have to play FB there just not much else. Jacobs he is not a full back and i'm hoping someone can push him out of the side. Thurgood has the guts but maybe not the body and strength.

Yeah look they'll just put Croad on the number 1 forward.
Whether that makes him fullback or chb doesn't matter too much, but if we play freo, he'll play on pavlich, sydney.. hall, port... tredrea... we can't expect Roughead to take any of those guys yet IMO.
So yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about that.
But both will play the two main defensive spots with perhaps Jaccobs and Boyle the guys helping them out, and Brown and Smith/Osborne the smaller types.
Not too bad of a back 6, but lacking 1 senior tall IMO.
Fwiw, I think Croad could be handy as a forward. He's improving as a general footballer and not just as a backman, I like him in the backline, but if we were stronger back there, I wouldn't hesitate to throw Croady forward on occasions,
But unfortunately after the loss of Hay, we have few sizable backman down there. I was all for the trading of Hay because we need to move on and focus on becoming skillful with good ball movement in modern footy, and Hay wasn't able to do this at all.
Gilham may be playing quite early if he has a good pre-season competition as well if his training form is anything to go by.

I agree 100% with you there cshreuder . Either we wait for our youngsters in Dawson to develop , or we trade / draft one in the next draft . But I agree , we just lack that one key tall ...

Perhaps I was subconsciously trying to tell myself at the time "Thornton, Thornton, Thornton, Thornton ..." ;)
But in all seriousness, it's good to look back (without abusing anyone - so take note) and see where we thought we'd be at come the end of this year. :thumbsu:

If we're on self-praise, I reckon I can take a few points for being there or thereabouts...!
