View Full Version : Who has to step up?
Maybe a little early for this, but who do you think really has to come on for us to rattle a few cages this year?
We have got a lot of quality veterans who will give us good value but obviously are no longer at their best. So which players are we putting out faith in to again make us a force? heres 4 the i think.
1. JB - goes without saying. We need him to be fit, simple as that. Did well to stay out of the tribunal last year. His marking ability and goal kicking aswell as his leadership and just him being there is crucial.
2. Brennan - I was blown away by his game in Round 1 and his injury seemed to be a big contributer to our fortunes after this game. At his best, almost impossible to match up on in the forward line. Will be a big part of our very different looking forward line in the future.
3. Hadley - was going to be an important part of our plans in 2005 but, well we all know what happened to the poor bloke. All signs point to a big year in 2006, and with Voss spending more time forward or on the wing, another big body is required in the middle especially with our stoppage problems throughout last year (not to mention keeping up our bully boy reputation). Hope he is getting shirtfront tips from Vossy.
4. Bradshaw - Pretty simple, need him to kick more goals on a regular basis. We know he can do it.
I know there are a lot of other players that could well be just as important.
Let us know your thoughts...

Looking forward to a great year from Brennan, he is one of my fav players from other teams and he has the talent to become a great of the game.

the first name that popped into my head was Leppa. I would liek to go a whole season without having a game where i was scrwaming for fk's sake leppa of fkn hell leppa!! etc etc.
After the season we found out he was carrying an injury that required surgery. Hopefully this was the only thing that was slowing him down and explained the complete lack on non interest for 50% of the season.
When firing on all cyclinders he is awesome down back. If we can get the Leppa, Michael, and Jonson backline back up to full steam again we will do much better this year.

I reckon with Leighs mum passing away, and getting married and all, it would have been understandable if the great mans mind was not on the job for the whole season.
Hopefully he has a less tumultuous year this year, and is able to focus on the job at hand.

Good call LL...he didnt have a great year, injured or not & is real important to our backline. Although I get the feeling their may be a bit of a shake up down back this year. Call this crazy, but I get the feeling CJ's time in the backline may be over (& not just cuz he doesnt kick it in anymore) & I would be surprised if we dont see him in the forward line a lot more often &....(wait for it) in the midfield...not that he or Leppa (if he doesnt get back to his best) will be easily replaced. Come to think of it, you could almost do a straight swap with Braddie for Leppa (sorry, my mind is working too hard).

If given a choice I would prefer to see leppa stay down back, Bradshaw is not as tough and doesn't go for the hard balls as such. He can get on a lead and take a mark but you rarely see him leaping into packs etc. Leppa tougher so better in defence. IMO anyway.

How about Corrie? Obviously has the talent, but hasn't produced as of yet, what are peoples expectations of him in 2006? Also do you guys expect Selwood to improve on his, good year last year, or may it be a case of second year blues?

I dont understand why Corrie is listed as a defender?

From what I saw last, Corrie improved a heap throughout the season (although I missed the last couple of games and could only read about them) & started playing more regularly on the wing or as running half back flanker where his pace helped a slightly sluggish looking midfield. Prefer to see him in these positions rather than as goalsneak. Although his defense has been good when sent forward, I think Sherman & McGrath are more suited to these small forward positions. What do you guys think?
Personally I would expect him to improve more, but not set the world on fire. Am hoping to see a lot more good runs across the wing and inside 50's from counter attacks where he can use his pace. Not so many goals from the middle of the ground as their has been in previous years for Bris (Akermanis excluded of course) and he is a goal kicker so would hope he improves on his 20 odd last year.
Not sure about Selwood, had a good year, beat a lot of good (if not great) players. I expect him to be kept to a mostly tagging role as last year. I think he can only improve from the experience, maybe a bit of Robert Copeland 'bastard' would help him.
