View Full Version : Which clubs do you like beating the most
Kildonan

Saw a thread on the main board which asks you which teams you like the most. I tried for a while to rank them in my mind, but what it came down to was I hate the team the Saints are playing no matter what. So I thought about if two teams were playing each other (not involving the Saints) and I decided that it wasn't so much who I liked better, but who I preferred to lose.
Then I decided to come at it from a different angle:
Who do I like the Saints to win against the most?
We haven't beaten Port Adelaide for 8 matches (since rd 11 2000) and it is well past due. They remain the only team we haven't beaten since our resurgence. I was really disappointed to lose to them in Tassie last year after building up my expectations.
We are tied with two teams on an historical count, both the Bulldogs (M138 W68 L68 D2) and Kangaroos (M140 W69 L69 D2) are dead even with us at the moment. I would like to see us get ahead of both of these teams.
We have a bone to pick with Freo after they were gifted a win (kick after the siren, Saints players falling like ninepins, umpires giving away frees in Freo's forward line like lollies at a kids party, but the pea went missing down the Saints end). They have a great list, but we are better.
If we beat Freo twice this season, we will go ahead of them in the historical count (M15 W7 L8 D0).
Swans rematch will be interesting too, we made them look second rate when we first met in 2005, after knocking them out of the finals race in convincing fashion late in 2004. I drove from Mackay (Qld) to Melbourne, then out to Nuriootpa (SA) to visit relatives, then back to Melbourne in time to watch that match. Well to say I was disappointed (having already booked my GF tickets) is an understatement. The Swans must pay.
I love beating Brisbane, my father and 2 of my brothers follow Brisbane, they have bathed in the glory of their premiership years and now its OUR time in the sun. I flew to Brisbane and watched the St Kilda flogging of Brisbane with them and had no compunction about highlighting how we were beating them, explaining the coaching moves and the feeble attempts at responses by Matthews. Milne's 11 was a bonus, but seeing Luke Ball cut up Brisbane denying them any supply was just delicious. Nevertheless, I much prefer to see a tight match between us.
Carlton, well need I say more.
Maybe not, but I will. Carlton are scum, they DESERVE to be bottom. "Let them rot" still echoes in my head every time we play them. What is it now? 6 wins on the trot and we don't look like slowing down any yet. The more the merrier, I say. Never let them in, never relent, crush them and crush their frail egos in the process. They have 100 years of pain to pay for and I want to eke out every drop of blood from them plus interest.
Sure there is passion and desire in beating West Coast, Knocking Adelaide off the perch, Essendon, Hawthorn, Bulldogs, Kangaroos and Richmond...
...but of all teams at the moment, I want to thrash Geelong.
I love beating Geelong.
From another post of mine:
The end of the 2003 season was when the Saints started coming of age. We won four on the trot in impressive fashion and the last game of the season was against the Cats. They jumped us and soured our self congratulations. The next season, we first met in the preseason comp in the GF. The Saints turned the tables winning and to Geelong's chagrin, we kept a lid on it. The Cats coach, Thompson was less than graceful about the loss, and Chapman acting as club spokesperson, issued a statement that suggested the Saints were inferior to the Cats and this would be shown to be the case next time they met. The Saints subsequently crushed the Cats leaving no doubt as to who was the young up and coming team was. The Cats were livid, and the next time we met was a cracker of a match at Kardinia Park which the Cats won (in a closely fought match). In 2005, we had two matches, the first where the Saints cruised to a comfortable lead, then capitulated due to loss of players in the midfield rotation. The Cats stormed home to win. The next match was an injury depleted Geelong, playing a dour brand of football to prevent a blowout win to the Saints.
I think what annoys me most about Geelong is that they still haven't realised that we are better than them.
They somehow still believe that they can beat us. I want to leave no doubt. I want the Saints to crush Geelong and make them realise that they had been deluding themselves all this time. I want Botox to come out and say: "The Saints were better than us". (I can't see him doing this). Or at least see him come out and try to take the heat off his players by saying he was outcoached. (If his ego will let him take the lead from the most immitated coach in this modern era).

I think it's time we started repaying Essendon the way we have started repaying Carlton.
Of the teams I really want to beat this year : Eagles in Perth round 1, Brisbane in Brisbane, Essendon and Port. Of course I want to win 'em all, but those 4 teams would give me the most pleasure.

I love it when we beat the West Australian teams. Living in Perth they never shut up about how good they are. People in Perth would have to be among the most ignoroant and arrogant of all supporters in the country.

Geelong easily. StKildonan summed it perfectly. Love thrashing those low-life, feral b@stards.
Also love beating Collingwood (especially whe Eddie is commentating), Essendon, Brisbane and Richmond.

Adelaide crows for me but i do like beating the w ankers from hawthorn
It's gotta be Essendon. I know a heap of Bomber supporters, and the majority are arrogant tossers who've given me 20 years of crap, so beating them is just pure pleasure.
And I wouldn't mind too much if we belted Port this year either.

Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond spring to mind, always love beating them. As for St Kilda, It's going to be good to see them have no success once again after being at the top. Saints supporters have absolutely nothin to brag about so I have no idea why their supporters think they own us... It's really stupid, until they actually have some success they will continue to be the real chokers of the AFL. When Carlton rise we actually have success and the runs on the board to prove it. Also I wouldn't mind having a win over Port for Stevo, the draw we had against them was almost like a loss, so damn close.

Dang, I forgot to mention beating Carlton is right on up there as well ... going for 7 in a row aren't we?

I dont mind these two bits - although would be more appropriate on the Carlton board

This is junk and is not welcome on the Saints board
For me it's Richmond. My friend and co-captain (im the other co-captain) of my team is a Real Madrid fan, and I'm a FC Barcelona fan, if we watch soccer. But when AFL time comes, he's a Richmond fan, so I have a great time making fun of him when we beat them.
Other teams I enjoy beating are Essendon, Carlton or Collingwood.
:D
No question for me, its Carlton...Absolutely murdered us for about a 100 years, so this little streak of beltings that we've got going on now certainly feels nice.

Doesn't yet feel like payback, may take a winning streak that lasts all century before we even the slate.

Well for the first games of 2006 I felt like this.
Brisbane v Essendon, didn't care either way, hate them both.
Bulldogs v Melbourne, didn't care was a pretty boring game anyway till the end.
Kangaroos v Sydney, Kangaroos of course were my favourites to win, after last year, it will always be good to Sydney lose.
Hawthorn v Richmond, hard one for me, but I guess I would have to say Hawthorn to win, my pathetic excuse would be because they got Brent Guerra.
Carlton v Geelong, seeing either team lose is a pleasure. No inkling for a favourite here at all.
Crows v Port, I went Crows, my sister will never let me off the hook if I went Port. I also figure Crows usually play a good clean game.
Need I say anything about the Saints v Collingwood. Naturally I never wish for Saints to lose. Mind you even though we lost it was a real on the "edge of your seat" game to watch.
West coast v Fremantle, I take West Coast any day, Fremantle losing make my day. Too bad they won this weekend. Grrrr.

I can delete or edit his posts, but this is something we Saints have to get used to: We are better than most teams at the moment. The weaker teams' supporters feel frustrated and set about trying to inflate their own team's importance by dredging up statistics that date back to the 1800's.
Our history is not laden with a great deal of success.
This does not mean that we have no pride in our past, in fact it is part of our strength. We have survived despite our lack of success and we are stronger for it. We have a real hunger for the success we missed out on when there was no regulation on salary caps or fair distribution of talented recruits.
We were a poor club, the rich clubs bought their success, even lured our best players away from us.
We survived through hard work and loyalty.
Those very characteristics are part of the success story we are now.
We cannot rest, though, because we haven't yet achieved ultimate success since 1966. We are hungry for it, we are talented, loyal and determined.

StKildonan, firstly, as a moderator I would have calculated that you would have the mental capacity to see the purpose of my initial post & evaluate if for what it was. Conversely you have dribbled on about weaker teams & their frustrations, dredging up statistics and so on. Maybe that does happen, but not in this case, so there is no need to generalise.
The thread is entitled "Which clubs do you like beating the most?" hence why I searched for a statistic that would reflect why that may be. Due to the lack of success over Collingwood, it would make perfect sense that Collingwood would be a target. Sourcing that stat has only illustrated that point, very simple & direct. There was no real troll intended. I have made 20 odd posts in total & you will find that there have not been any trolls. Why would I start now, especially on a team that I actually like?
You are correct about one thing, some of your supporters need to lower their levels of sensitivity & reflect on positives. I question how they would handle the frequent trolling that goes on the Collingwood board.
If you were to delete my post that would only advertise weakness.

I didn't have any problem with it as I initially took it the way you meant it.
But I wasn't the only one who wondered what you meant:
Yeah, and your point is???
mad-saint-guy was a little wary, and asks you to clarify. You reply with this:
Work it out. It really isn't all that complicated.................
This was your chance for perfect clarity and you wasted it with mild sarcasm.
You were then assumed to be a troll (not just by myself, but by an international AFL supporter who has the class and good taste to favour the Saints)
My detailed explanation to Bluejay is due to the fact that he is a supporter from a foreign country whom I assumed did not know the history of the Saints nor their relationship with Collingwood.
I am glad that you clarified the situation i.e. "Due to the lack of success over Collingwood, it would make perfect sense that Collingwood would be a target." and yes it all makes sense now. I wish you had posted that after the MSG query.
Apologies for the misinterpretation, but our history with Collingwood fans is littered with ill-intentioned zealots with an axe to grind.

Is it really that bad? Most clubs have inconsiderate, irrational & uneducated supporters. I am glad that this issue has been resolved. Communication is an incredible tool. I concede there was a tone of sarcasm, overall, intentions were not villainous. ;)

sorry to intrude but maybe the reason you want to beat geelong is because you know we are a quality side and you definately have something to prove against us. Same reason cats love beating saints.
We are both great sides - clearly the best vic sides - and really who is better can change on any given day, injury runs, form etc.
Its a big battle now.
Saints supporters are sure they are the better side
Cats supporters are sure they are
We have to let the season proper decide and I think it's a pretty exciting match up and a great game whenever these teams meet.
Oh and there is also this thing about neither of us winning a grand final in so long..like a competition to see who is actually going to make it with the side they have first!
Hope you dont mind me posting, just my 2 cents

In fact we have a rivalries thread where much of the same has been said Link (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=95447&page=2)
PS: I don't think that we have anything to prove, in fact the reverse is quite true, Geelong seem to need to think they can beat us to maintain their self - belief.

Paul Chapman speaks the truth. :D:thumbsu:

I remember reading this thread when it first came out and as soon as I saw it back up here I knew why? And that idiot Collingwood supporter on the main board congratulating the geelong fans on being graceful winners (or whatever) - bullshit. Geelong supporters sicken me (with very few exceptions) and their premiership win has given me even more reason to want to win against them.
If we win one game next year, please, please, please let it be against Geelong.
Jeez; let'em have their time in the sun; after 40+ years of misery they've surely earned it. We oughta know ...
Sure, there are plenty of Geelong supporters who are tossers, but all clubs have their fair share of those, and there are plenty of terrific Geelong fans who are quietly enjoying their flag.

I know, and i will happily let THEM have their time in the sun - but the arrogant tosspot ones can go to hell - and i can ponly think of a handful of reallife geelong supporters who are not like that.

The diffrence between geelong and the saints is that the saints have a few weak areas where as geelong dont have 1 weakness

I love beating Carlton, not sure why but ever since I was a kid I've loved it.

Come to think of it... I like beating ANYBODY! With our history as a club, beggars can't be choosers. I'm not gonna get picky (but if I was, it might be the more arrogant teams like Adelaide, West Coast, Carlton, Collingwood, or Geelong).
